Doh! How did I mess that one up?! One of my favorite Neil’s as well.
Yeah, so, scrap the whole CCR angle. I still like Born on the Bayou as a theme though.
April 15, 2021 at 1:14 pm #107252CauseISaidSoParticipantFirst, I didn’t catch last week’s announcement so thanks for making it again Els. I’m sorry to hear that.
The things I relate most closely to memories of Curious are Louisiana and cats. Since I don’t want to see another cats theme, maybe something like “Born on the Bayou” with the theme applying to anything that evokes Louisiana – New Orleans, alligators, bayous, crawfish, Cajuns and/or Cajun/Creole food, etc.
Since they’re both CCR songs (Down by the River and Born on the Bayou), you could even make it a CCR theme.
January 30, 2019 at 2:26 pm #103935CauseISaidSoParticipantI think you skipped a week, Els. Contest #720 will be on 2/20, not 2/27.
January 30, 2019 at 2:21 pm #103934CauseISaidSoParticipantas long as it starts with an N
Pretty sure you meant “F” there, Elsinore. 🙂

December 8, 2017 at 4:00 am #53990CauseISaidSoParticipantOn the “no more thumbnail images” thing, is that just for Dream a Little Dream or all contests going forward? Because this week looks right.
Yeah, I saw that. Maybe I got 403’s because I scanned the last contest after it closed? Even then I see that 3 out of 39 thumbnails made it through. Strange. I really don’t know the hows and whys of it.
Also, I can see if Fark’s code monkeys would be willing and/or able to do something with API. Worth a shot anyway…
That would make life so much easier! And really, I’ll keep at it as long as I’m able. I really don’t want Bibliostats to disappear but like I said, my time is pretty tight for the next few months.
December 6, 2017 at 9:06 am #53988CauseISaidSoParticipantThis contest has now been scanned but there’s bad news – Fark has decided to prevent me from downloading images. I already had to make an emergency change to the scraper during Thanksgiving the previous week due to yet another HTML change and now images are returning 403 Forbidden when I try to download them. So, the rankings and stats will be correct (until the next HTML change) but there’ll be no more thumbnail images on the Bibliostats contest pages.
The personal obligation that Els referred to is that I was moving to another city for a few-months-long work assignment. Said work is going to keep me very busy and I likely won’t have time to make any changes to the scraper so the next HTML change will probably be the end of Bibliostats.
Frankly, I’m tired of having to make late-night emergency changes to the scraper every time the HTML format changes on Fark so regardless of my work commitment, I may be at the point of bowing out of the Farktography monitoring business. If this is important to Fark and its users then Fark needs to expose a web API for querying contest entries so that formatting changes don’t affect the scraper.
I’m really sorry folks. The first contest that was scraped live for Bibliostats was #287, “He’s a Fun Guy,” on 2010-Oct-27 so it’s been a good run but we may be nearing the end :(.
October 31, 2016 at 4:09 pm #53772CauseISaidSoParticipantJust FYI but this is also contest #600…
August 3, 2016 at 8:00 pm #53752CauseISaidSoParticipantFYI, I’m hitting the road on vacation tomorrow (Aug 4) and returning possibly late Wed Aug 17 or Thu Aug 18.
La Musica is setup to be scraped this week and I’m going to try to get Framed! setup for next week but it may not be possible. If not, I’ll have to scrape it afterwards. Also, I’ll be returning just as Hootenanny is starting so it also has the possibility of starting late.
Hope everyone’s summer is going great and you’re avoiding most of the heat!
July 17, 2016 at 6:50 pm #53740CauseISaidSoParticipantIn case anyone was wondering what was up with Bibliostats this week, we had a storm come through Thursday that knocked out power until 3AM this morning. Lemme tell ya, electricity is something that you appreciate exponentially more each day that you’re without it! So nice to sleep in our own bed with the AC again…
June 9, 2016 at 7:24 pm #53701CauseISaidSoParticipantFYI since it’s not highlighted on Bibliostats – in addition to a couple of Scarlet R’s, retrophil also has 4 votable entries.
May 11, 2016 at 11:05 pm #53724CauseISaidSoParticipantEdit: found it on Bibliostats (and thanks to whoever maintains that!). We last did this in Jan 2012.
You’re welcome. 😉 Wish I had more time to participate in the contests but it’s just not in the cards right now.
May 9, 2016 at 4:25 pm #53693CauseISaidSoParticipantDon’t know if there are any Office fans here, but… Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica
March 4, 2016 at 6:13 pm #32490CauseISaidSoParticipantFor the maybe one other person besides me who still visits the forums and uses this (looking your way, orionid), here’s the modified javascript that works with the latest voting results page:
javascript:(function()%7Bvar%20a%3D0%2Cb%3D0%2Cc%3D0%3B%24('td.commentHeaderRow%5BcolSpan%3D%224%22]%20span').each(function()%7Ba%3Da%2B1%3Bvar%20d%3D%24(this).text()%3Bd%3Dd.substr(0%2Cd.indexOf(%22%20%22))%3Bif(d!%3Dc)%7Bb%3Da%3Bc%3Dd%7Dvar%20e%3D%22th%22%2Cg%3Db%25100%3Bif(g%3C4%7C%7Cg%3E20)%7Bvar%20f%3Db%2510%3Bif(f%3D%3D1)e%3D%22st%22%3Belse%20if(f%3D%3D2)e%3D%22nd%22%3Belse%20if(f%3D%3D3)e%3D%22rd%22%7D%24(this).before('%3Cspan%20style%3D%22float%3Aright%3Bmargin-right%3A8px%3Bfont-size%3Alarger%22%3E'%2Bb%2Be%2B%22%20Place%20(Entry%20%23%22%2Ba%2B%22)%3C%2Fspan%3E%22)%7D)%7D)()
September 1, 2015 at 3:15 pm #53598CauseISaidSoParticipantI don’t personally have any experience travelling with film (at least not in the last 15 years or so) but according to the signs posted at the screening lines, the x-ray machine is not supposed to affect film with ISO 800 or slower so if you trust that (and your film isn’t faster then ISO 800) then you should be fine running it through the x-ray machine.
The signs also say that if you have concerns about running the film through x-ray, you can ask them to hand-check it. Again, I’ve never done that so I don’t know how they do it (surely they don’t open unexposed film, right?) or how happy they are to do it either.
You DO NOT want to put your film in checked baggage though. Bags get x-rayed with a much more powerful beam that would surely destroy your film.
Good luck, have a safe trip, and post pics when you get back!
