Vista was the turning point for me as well. I played around with PCLOS, LinuxMint, Ubuntu and a couple of other distros. I settled on Ubuntu for its familiar feel; being Windows-like was a must for me as a linux n00b.

Gotta say Ubuntu has cleaned up well in the past couple years. No more wireless issues, graphic card detection is well-polished and it seems they’ve got support for all the web-based goodies mostly ironed out (flash, etc). I still find the occasional site that doesn’t play nice with firefox/ubuntu, but it’s become a rarity.

It does what I tell it to do, and I’m good with that.

    Guess. It’s a common thing.

No options needed. Windows, Mac and Linux are completely different beasts.

I’ll keep “suffering” with Linux, thanks.

    Good luck!

…and especially so with re-adjusting to working days. I spent 5 years on the vampire shift and it took a year before I wasn’t doing the narcoleptic faceplant on the desk by 11AM every day.

Rav, if it’s gonna cost, say, $200-300 to repair and retailed for under $800, commence drooling over a new model (assuming it’s run mad cycles). Sorr you’re without for now tho. 🙁

latest four pics in my photopile…

I’m pretty sure the mechanical linkage is where you suspect, but damn if I can catch a glimpse of it line-of-sight. The spring is there, and there’s a coil buried inside along with a “lug” on the mirror assembly right there. When lifting the mirror, the spring barely moves visibly but moves much more when you get to see it from the back side of the mirror. Don’t mind the scotch tape, that’s keeping my secondary out of the way (I broke it’s linkage [which is on the right of the mirror] running off 20K cycles on a time lapse…autofocus is now broken).

If you want me to poke and prod a bit, I can… but my booger picker is at work…

sorr it took so long, but youse guys are gonna get tired of my griping about long irregular hours 😆

I’ve often wondered about the Nikon/Canon rivalry… both make quality gear (depending on price range, of course) and outstanding optics on their high end, but I have no idea of what either offers over the other in real terms. The only thing I’m aware of is (was?) that Canon’s sensors have better red/IR response (good for astrophotographers) and Nikon’s have better blues/greens; but the rivalry pre-dates digital so that really doesn’t explain much.

I went with Canon because I had been wanting to try my hand at astrophography for years, and since I had no collection of lenses (moot point if you’re shooting prime focus anyway) Canon made more sense. Well, they also were the first to market with a consumer-priced digital (<$1000) so I had 2 major reasons at the time.

Way cool, but I wonder what the odds are of them getting a visit from someone about their expedition? It would be silly of anyone to pursue them for this, but I’ve seen crazier stuff than that from an embarrassed CO…

    Can I have the carcass?

Why do I have a mental image of someone sitting in a restaurant saying “Are you gonna eat that?” (I am interested to see what it gets recycled as, tho…) 😀

Yeah, I did that…so does that mean they’re triggered by the light from the camera’s built-in flash? I guess what I’m looking for is a description and mechanics of the term “slave”.

n/m, I see that is the case… google is awesome.

…and I’m going to sound completely ignorant asking this, but how are they triggered?
