Participanthahahaha… gotta love it!
Great adwork, there…chupathingie
Participantoooh, very pretty… and yes, a lucky happening. I spent maybe six years total living up in that part of the US and in all that time I’ve seen one luna moth. Very cool!

ParticipantOh…and filters. circ polarizer I almost always keep on outdoors, so I needed another. Got 2 UVs (same size this glass and the kit lens) to help with fuzzy air.

Participantedit: I wanted a good color corrected lens with general use in mind but also could piggyback later. That and I tend to abuse stuff…I really like the build on this, even if it’s heavy. no shots yet, it was 3 hrs before I got to open it (had to run some prints to someone). This place is a lot darker than DFW, but that ain’t saying much. Still, at f2.8 or even stopped down to f4 it’s going to cut down on image time (good for my poor tracking) shooting the sky.
The rest are toys, pretty much. I didn’t own a flash until today. I usually do landscapes, haven’t needed a flash. The extender tubes are cheap, but they look well molded… I think I trust them for not breaking and dropping something on the floor, but I don’t think they’ll take much abuse. They do pass signal between lens and body, so they seemed like a great buy to play with a little close focus with some of the random lens assortment.

ParticipantI told him I was done being good for the year and that he’d need a boxcar for my coal if he waited til December.

ParticipantIt was downstream, and google maps isn’t particularly helpfull on this one, so I’ll just describe and hope your knowledge of the old stomping grounds pays off.
Well that narrows things down considerably… that’s about 2 crow-fly miles from my high school way back in 82…we used to party in the woods up there, and we launched the rafts for the tourii at the base of Stewart’s Dam (which almost succumbed to the heavy runoff this year, BTW). About 2 miles SE of that spot is a stream that falls maybe 20 feet into a deep pool that we used to swim in, would have been a perfect spot for another pic for this theme. Pretty up there.

ParticipantOrionid, were you up or downstream from the Sacandaga Reservoir for that river shot? I went to high school just a couple three miles from the downstream portion of the river, where it joins the Hudson at Rockwell Falls. I spent a summer playing white water guide along that stretch for the tourists.

ParticipantI listened to the local camera store guy (we actually have a nice camera shop…or did back when I lived there) and bought a manfrotto tripod way back in…2003? It’s heavy, solid, and I’ve beat it like crazy. Still using it.
I really want a ball head for it, but I keep finding other stuff to buy.
So yeah, I’m in total agreement with “Don’t buy a cheap tripod.”
As for wind, I’ve yet to find ANY tripod that can keep a long exposure steady enough for sharp imaging with a 300mm and lens hood in place. I’m tempted to carry sand bags in the car to drape over the camera on days like that.

ParticipantSad thing is, even if he takes her to court and gets a judgement she may not have the resources to repay him. Blood from a stone and all…

Participantoh that’s painful….
So what happened? Did she find he was taking pictures of someone else?

ParticipantBeautiful shot!
And yeah, echoes on the hopes that the unemployment line turns out to be a short gig. 🙁 I suppose that you’re in a large metro area is a good thing in this regard, hopefully there are more opportunities.

ParticipantI got the 2.8. I figured it could also be used as an f5.6 400mm with a doubler, which gives it a nicely sized field of view for some of the brighter DSOs out there. I almost bought the non-IS version, but after playing with a cheap 70-300mm the other day and having a great deal of difficulty spot-focusing I figured I’d better just blow the money on the IS. Hurts now, but I know I’ll be happy I did it later.

ParticipantFair enough, sleeping, I think I could actually do what I’m intending in natural light indoors. I have very little experience with lighting; I lean towards landscapes. You’d be fair to say “All that guy does is landscapes.” Your recommendation made a lot of sense for indoor use, especially since I have no clue how to control outdoor lighting. Hey, this is all a learning experience for me, and most of of the FT’y crowd have the hands-on that I lack. Not to mention you folks have some free time… I envy you for that… I’ll be happy to take 1/2 dozen images that I like a year; even if I have to plan and process to get them. I’m hardly close to that goal yet.

ParticipantTOYS! And thanks for biting, palma (pokes with stick) 😉 Bought sleeping‘s suggested kit (as mentioned, and after looking around I realised the recommendation pretty much fit), a set of extender tubes, a pair of mid-grade UV filters since I needed them simply for protection from the wind and blown sand here (plus I do like the way they knock haze down), an additional 77mm circ polarizer so I won’t have to swap when I change lenses, and something I think I’m gonna enjoy even if I don’t manage to use it for it’s intended purpose (wide-field astrophotography)… a 70-200mm L ISII USM.
Much as I’m looking forward to playing with the new zoomer, I REALLY wanna see what the extender tubes do with some other lenses. I’ve got a slew of potential targets and stages in mind for the macro end of things…

Participantwow, ran off all day getting RW stuff done and not a single “whatcha get?”… You guys are tough to troll…
