ParticipantThere are several makers of inexpensive add-on lenses. They’re sometimes called macro lenses or close-up lenses.
Here’s the same kit I have… http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=88779&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

ParticipantI have an S1 IS, but I use a different camera as my primary now. What I did to enable macro shots was buy the Canon LAH-DC10 52mm lens adapter and some Hoya macro lenses. Probably $50 in total.
The lens adapter is very very useful. I use it with a standard polarizer a lot.
You might want to consider a tabletop tripod if you plan to do a lot of still macro shots.
Example results with the S1 and a macro lens:

ParticipantI don’t personally have much experience with indoor sport photography, but a co-worker does lots of it. He has a ridiculou$ amount of ca$h tied up in his equipment, but he gets great results. The lenses he uses are like something off a spy satellite.

ParticipantIf the photos of the people on the staff page are anything to go by, you should have interesting bosses and co-workers. They look like they don’t take themselves too seriously, which is usually pretty nice.

ParticipantGE makes some incandescant full spectrum bulbs. I think they’re called “Reveal” or something like that. I’ve gotten good results w/o flash when the room is brightly lit by those lights.

ParticipantTaking lots of test pictures to compare results is great. Also, be sure to take multiple shots of real photo subjects to ensure that at least one is what you hoped for.
I don’t really bracket exposures, but I do try to get a couple of slightly different angles on most nature shots.
I took 1100 photos during a 1 week trip and 80% of them were OK, but it was the few great ones that made taking so many extras worthwhile.

ParticipantI’ve been using version 1.6 of Picasa for a while. I tried version 2 but I didn’t care much for the changes to the organization tools.
I’ve also tried Cumulus (IIRC) and found that to be clumsy and slow.
