I saw the subject “My Boobies” and thought “Isn’t schnee a guy?”

Could someone write code to randomize the display order? That would negate any advantage early posters might get…

As for reducing the number of entries, I think 3 is best because it forces some people (myself included) to go out and look for new photos to shoot. Reducing it to one would really undermine the motivation we get today.

    Merci beaucoup… Unexpected, too.

in reply to: 4-12-06 Spring is in the air #4632

So, has everyone been out this week trying to throw springs with one hand and photograph them with the other?

Nope, I just told mine to sit still while I took the pic. But arguably, it is immersed in the atmosphere which would put it “in the air.”

Try the photo normally first. You may not have any trouble with the city lights. If necessary, increase the f number and go from there. Assuming you use digital, it should be easy to see whether your photo looks “right.”

If your photos are stopping the action and aren’t underexposed then your settings are probably fine. There are good noise reduction software packages out there. I use Noise Ninja with my (very noisy) Panasonic FZ30. I’m very happy with the results.

For this sample set, the hypothesis (“Early posting garners more votes”) is likely to be false. The “p” value is a measure of the confidence in the correlation. Lower p’s mean that there is less likely to be an error. Statisticians think that a p < 0.05 is a good value (if I recall my stats classes correctly).

Could it be as simple as “early posts are near the top of the page and therefore everybody sees them”?

    Have at it, P-shoppers…

in reply to: Add-on flash for Canon A620 #4380

Dunno if staplermofo would catch my fairly late TF thread comment, but I bought a Digi-Slave 3000 recently. It works very nicely both on and off the camera, plus it works with cameras that pre-flash.

That was unexpected… I’m flattered that people liked that photo so much.

Once the contest goes live, I’m sure someone can post the link here. You can always find the contest in the “Farkives” section where several days’ worth of links are available. Look at the bottom of the main Fark page.

I love these contests. They force me to think of new things to shoot, and then go do it! I set up an ersatz studio in my basement just to take two of the shots I posted tonight.

Some people have really good photos… Wow…

in reply to: Macro Lens #4252

Macro photography is cool, but there are a couple of things to watch out for… For one, your camera’s auto-focus may not work well with a macro lens, so manual focus is a good idea. Second, the depth of field is very small, so I’ve found it easier to lock the focus and move the camera back and forth to get what I want. Third, high powered macro attachments usually have a *lot* of fringing outside the focal point. Maybe more expensive lenses would cure this, maybe not. Finally, you should consider reviewing macro photos on a large screen during your photo shoot because what may look fine in the tiny viewfinder could really be slightly out of focus or otherwise ruined.
