ParticipantI’m jealous of all you doing your night photos. I can honestly say I haven’t even seen a star in the past month. Friggin’ cloud cover and light pollution here is just ridiculous. Ditto what orionid said – post the finals so I can be even more jealous.

ParticipantI just finished my first round of voting then checked out the results. I’m shocked at how some of my favorites are at the lower end of the table.
/Disagreeing with voters is always my favorite pastime.

ParticipantGot mine posted, 2 beers later I agree that my original 3rd choice was the better of the two. For some reason my tree/sunset shot had to be resized down considerably to get under the 256k size limit, even after re-uploading at a lower JPG quality setting. :-/
That JPG limit really hurts sometimes. My danshui sunset photo looks sharp and ridiculously detailed in its original form, but after resizing it to fit fark limits it lost a lot of its pop. Maybe I need to try different converters to resize my images…right now I’m using the ViewNX. Does anyone have suggestions on cleaner photo resizes?
Farktographer
ParticipantDamn you, sleeping…you got your sunset shot in mere seconds before I got there -_- Now I look like a copycat! 🙄

ParticipantI believe from the original thread it’s tilting the camera, not the subjects (though if you tilted the camera and counter-balanced with subjects, you’d end up with some cool results)

ParticipantEh, decided to ditch it anyways but thanks for the ruling 🙂

ParticipantCan I get a ruling on this one?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilpadrino03/6545837051/I may or may not decide to use it; it’s not one of the stronger entries I’m looking at in my archive, but I’m curious if it’ll work. The sun isn’t clear, but you can visibly see that the sun is in the sky overexposing the background.
Farktographer
ParticipantI was planning on archive-diving since I haven’t even seen the sun in a couple weeks (Manchester weather is just the worst/lab time is all indoors), but seeing these early contenders and B’s just makes me feel inadequate. Oh, woe is me.

ParticipantI’ll ditto all the “wow”s. Stunning work. Regarding details, I’m interested in how you got so much color in the sky in your second image. It’s within farktography regulations you said, so…did you blast a colored light at low clouds or something? Some awesome effects all-around though. What did you use to paint the light – was it small flashlights coated with various colors?

ParticipantAwesome, added you back. The G+ thing is still all new to me, so I need to figure out the ins and outs and spiffy up my profile eventually.
Farktographer
ParticipantRav, I *think* this is how I link my G+ account? https://plus.google.com/106782615812133673940/posts I just went to the farktography one and added everyone there into my circles. Am I doing this right? haha.
Farktographer
ParticipantThanks, Rav! I posted some up on G+ but I don’t know if that means I did them individually or whatnot…G+ still confuses me a bit. Your praise is much too high though – I still aspire to hit your level.

ParticipantI’m just *beaming* about this theme, though I have knot a thing to use as yet. I’ll have to gnaw on it a while, maybe think how I can go out on a limb with it (there’s no MacClaine difficulty, is there?); it’s a good opportunity to branch out and think outside the box. I’m pining for this one; I might even have some sappy photography, for the romantic voters, I should stop now, leaves whilst I canz…
…*sigh*
Updated difficulty: Rav isn’t allowed to participate in this one.

Participant^one thing i loathe about being in the UK – the inability to watch the Daily Show. They block it out here…it sucks.

ParticipantI’m likely (given enough chances) to try all 3 of my current lenses, but the biggest difference between your shots and what I’m shooting is the fact that you appear to have been hundreds of yards away, if not more than a mile away from the fireworks. Frontier Field is only 400something feet deep at center. I’ll be shooting from maybe 100 yards away from the launching pads. Likely I’ll be needing the wide angle to get context, as well as to have more field of view and not have to guess at where they’re going to explode.
But, you’ve given me a starting point. My manual lens allows me to make the f-stop “stick” unlike the digitals (which are obviously controlled by the camera), so the 28-70 may be my best bet in this instance, once I get the settings figured out.
A suggestion: if you’re able to, set up the takes like ennui suggested after the game’s done one evening just to see how the grounds are exposed sans fireworks. This’ll give you an idea of where to set up and what you want in your images before the fireworks start going up. It’s best if there’s a way they can get the lighting the same way they will for the fireworks and if you know where they’ll be launching.
That’s the one thing I regretted not doing with my fireworks shots – we had no clue where they’d be launching from, so I had no chance to set up a “scenic” area to capture the grounds. That’s why all mine were only of the fireworks – I much more favour ennui’s take with giving them context.
Then again, you’ll get the chance to shoot them over and over again, so maybe it’s not as much an issue if the first few batches don’t turn out just right.
