ParticipantI don’t understand how you can put the value of $1 billion on something like that. Seeing as it’s not a patented idea to have digitized filters, couldn’t a second company do *exactly* the same thing and completely sink instagram by next month?
The tide rises and falls quickly on all these apps and sharing services. I wouldn’t bother investing in one or the other because some will stick around for good, but just as frequently (or even moreso) you see something rise to get bought out for a cool half-million, only to disappear under the surface after the novelty has worn off.

You’ve been in England too long.
Nice shots, though.
^That’s a habit of me trying not to fight my auto-correct which has taken to the British-style. Every time I use my proper ‘merican spelling it puts the squiggly red line under it 😡

ParticipantLove the lighting caught in your corgi’s eyes in that first shot

ParticipantYep. Super-broad, so anything about wood fits, living or dead.

ParticipantAs far as the sepia, I guess you’d have to compare them to the original color versions which were…drab. The sepia at least hid that, but if it wasn’t industrial/old stuff I don’t know if I could get away with it. I see what you’re saying though where, if I wanted to make them look more authentically old-fashioned, I’d have to run it through some more processing.

ParticipantGreat high-speed captures. It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to do that.
The closest I could find for some possible tips and hits are here: http://www.farktography.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2949 But I know a lot of us have shot fireworks before so if you have any questions in particular feel free. I have a handful on my flickr here http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilpadrino03/6322750345/ if you want some exif data to go on, but I certainly didn’t plan my shots as well as some of the other photographers here so the best bet would probably be that earlier forum.

ParticipantWelcome!
All I have to add to rav’s comment is a ditto on the lower ISO. If you did that, the background wouldn’t be quite so grainy and you’d end up with an image that was sharper, maybe making it all “pop” more.
As for software, I’m personally not a big fan of it. I know I’ll need to learn it later, but I’m trying to do as much as I can in-camera rather than relying on software as a crutch. I’ll use it periodically for a small exposure/contrast/shadow level tweak, but not much else.

ParticipantWow. But you’re right, no matter how good you are (and he is – he has an eye for what he’s doing), it’d still be a lot of connections, money, and time to be able to pull off that sort of shoot.

ParticipantOne of the darkest places on (accessible and land-based) earth is in Scotland, a few hours north of me. I’m already making plans to go up there in the summer for some astrophotography 😀

That link says there are other dark skies parks Utah and Pennsylvania, so mayhaps those could interest other photographers.

ParticipantSeems like an unbiased test to me. It’s just simple proof that Nikon will always win.

ParticipantI have my film developed, but never got around to actually scanning it. I’ve been squashed with research the past few weeks, so I’ll probably be hiding in the corner for the next several projects. Bummed out…

Participant^’55? She’s a beaut.
Farktographer
ParticipantWell, if that’s the case, then I don’t need to specify for anyone that the above question was purely hypothetical and I am in no way planning on doing anything whatsoever illegal to avoid taxes 😉
