ParticipantSo is this where we “ask the stoned guy”?

ParticipantThere’s something about forced down-time, isn’t there? I think, for me at least, that it’s the complete guiltfree-ness of it; I mean, you literally could not be doing anything else productive during that stretch of time so you might as well just sit back and enjoy the ride, so to speak. That “otherwise occupied” feelling is a also good part of why I enjoy long road trips.
So much this. It’s the main reason I go back to the desert (or forest or mountains or ad infinitum) repeatedly. It cleanses my soul.

ParticipantSo that surface finish looks pretty rough, is that normal for this kind of prototype?

ParticipantIn the future, if you get ribbed here over being a gearhead pointedly, it’s only because you posted about saving your gear and only mentioned the painful broken freekin’ bone in the header.
This. It was the first thing that popped into my head when I started to read the paragraph,.. “Yeah but are the camera and bike OK?” (in that order)
Here’s to feeling better,.. Bottom’s Up!

ParticipantI will post photos but since it is a public event and I am a “telescope operator” it is unlikely that I will be photographing much. One of our members will be doing the photographer part so I hope to get some of his work I can show off.
The 16″ f4.5 is about 70-80% complete. The Suerrier truss frame fabrication from 6061 alloy aluminum is done. I still need to do all “the little things” like complete the primary mirror cell, mount the secondary and spider, mount the focuser, and fabricate the alt/az fork. Someday after that I plan to automate it with a Meade LXD75 Autostar controller and motors.
I am having severe photography withdrawals, and hope to rejoin the party next month when things quiet down a little post September.

ParticipantWe got rained out this last Saturday so we’re going to try again this Saturday.

ParticipantDude! I love Arcus Young!–I’m such a big AC/DC fan; I didn’t even notice him till you mentioned it; how excellent that you got the shot with him there! 😀
What a young angus might look like:

ParticipantI think it will hit Fark yesterday.

ParticipantOh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I?ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, ? and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of ? wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov?ring there,
I?ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I?ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew ?
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
– Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.fluffybunny
Participant‘Cuda,
You’re killing me with these shots (excellent photography BTW). I lived out there for four years and it is by far one of my favorite places.
How are you liking the wide lens?

ParticipantOne of the things I was going to look closer at was the thread type you chose. I can’t really tell from the images at the Shapeways site but it looks like you are using a type of unifed thread or machine thread with a conical profile. Did you consider Acme threads (or some other trapezoidal form)? Not sure what material you are looking at (maybe plastic?) but sometimes Acme makes for smoother linear motion.

ParticipantWell, I tried those files and none of my software liked them. Can you export to SolidWorks, STEP or IGES?
fluffybunny
ParticipantAt one point I tried my 7d in a scanner function similar to this idea but for OCR’ing books. It worked reasonably well. I imagine CISS’ 5DIII would be fantastic in roles such as these.
