ParticipantI was wondering, Caradoc, do you think a meteor would trigger the lightning triggers? That would be SO much easier, though it would miss the start of them.
I am not a caradoc, nor do I play one on TV but AFAIK the best way to detect meteors is using their RF signal:

ParticipantI downloaded that set of files and will try to look at them this weekend. Pretty sure I can read IGES and Solidworks.

ParticipantEh, I looked at my old macro filters and they are +1, +2 and +3 so I would be buying a cheap set. Count me in for buying one. I can proof if A***cad will read the format. Is there a file to download somewhere on that shapeways site?

ParticipantMy old ones are 55mm but I would consider buying a cheap set to give it a go. What price will you be asking? I don’t have Alibre, I use A***cad mostly. If it will import I’ll look at it. What kind of proofing do you need?

ParticipantI suspect many of us are entering this realm in one way or another. Like Chupa I was kind of hesitant to reply here, especially given the naked honesty and eloquence from ennui. However I know from personal experience that 90% of life is just about showing up so know that you are in my thoughts.

ParticipantHere’s the current model uploaded to the 3d printing company site.
Freakin awesome man! When do the go on sale? (Sorry I still have not been able to redo those angular measurements.)

Participantassuming there are Windows versions of the tools you’re using
Not sure if applicable in this case but Cygwin is a long time friend of mine when I don’t have a Linux box nearby.

ParticipantI studied “Uncle” Rod Mollise’s free book “Choosing and Using a Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope” when I began as a noob amateur astronomer. His practical views on things made a great impression on me and I have yet to regret taking his advice. I’m not sure if this quote can be attributed to him but it is certainly a central tenant to his philosophy:
“The best telescope for you is the one you use.”
Having said that, it’s hard to replace aperture and you may someday acquire the circumstances in your life to leverage “the beast”,.. Maybe get a small plot outside town and setup it up as a robotic scope?
Best of luck coming to resolution on this and please keep us informed.

Participant+1 for moving on with a new body.
Speaking from long experience, reasons to fix something:
1) You can’t afford to have it fixed or replaced and you do it yourself.
b) You want to gain the knowledge and experience resulting from doing it.
5) Sentimentality.
Q) You must learn things the hard way.In the past I have fallen squarely into all of these categories.
Now with a little age (read insight) I can evaluate each scenario as it arises.
Any more it’s kind of like the cost/benefit calculation I do when I drop change on the ground.
Used to be I would bend over to get anything, even a penny. Now it’s got to be at least a dime

ParticipantHey ‘Cuda,
Wishing you the best of times up in the NW. It is one of my favorite areas of the country. Spent a few years there and wish I could figure out how to get back.
I think you’re going to like the Tokina. I have the Canon version and it is one of my top three (Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for “normal”, Sigma 100-300 f4 for “long” [used to be Canon 70-200 f4 which I still have but use in a more limited way] and the Canon 10-22 for wide). You can put some interesting perspective on subjects with a lens like that which no other can touch (not even fisheyes).
I considered the Tokina at great length for its f2.8 when I was researching but decided that the extra range was more important (fewer lens swaps). In practicality, at the wide end you can easily shoot 1/20 sec exposures free hand without blur because of the (1/focal length) thumb rule, so the f2.8 doesn’t have the same value for me as it does in a lens with a range like 17-50 mm. Also, I switched to the 7D around that same time so I got a bump in high ISO performance. YMMV, IANAL, OMGWTFBFFBBQ, and so on.
/If I remember correctly, the Tokina may work on full frame so if you have plans for migration that may factor in,…

ParticipantHey Loki,
Have you read through this yet?
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/12/canons-error-99-the-man-the-mythSeems like a pretty thorough treatment of error 99 (although I only browsed it).

ParticipantAll us Canonites are just a little green with envy over that 5dIII, that is one badass camera.
fluffybunny
ParticipantI understand. Also, love that chart.

ParticipantThen experience the HDR HOLE…
It’s funny how that has practically become a rite of passage…
Since I don’t do a lot of heavy post processing, I am a noob to this. Please asplain “rite of passage” and/or “HDR HOLE”.
