ParticipantI would love the opportunity to oooohhh and aaaaaahhhhhh over the aurora just once.
/jealousy walks away 🙁

ParticipantThe second is a great shot. Were you far enough away to avoid getting your equipment wet?
There is supposed to be some kind of gizmo that you can use to sense a lightning strike and trigger the camera in time to catch the shot but it is quite expensive.QuickSilver
ParticipantI must have missed something. this is as quiet as I have seen the forum in months.
Did everyone go on vacation?QuickSilver
Participantwhat staplermofo said about the tripod and general difficulty applies to any true macro shots. the DOF is really shallow and focus(ing) is a pain.
I know about the depth of field problems for sure it took me about 10 shots to get the one of the key on the Treasury seal. 🙂

ParticipantYou might want to consider a lens reverser and a cheap, used 50mm full manual lens. Having the most sensitive to damage part of your lens inches from what you’re shooting is really nerve wracking, what with the weight of two lenses, and the constant frobbing of every knob on your tripod to get the 1/100″ closer so you can even make out what you’re trying to shoot.
Thanks for the info folks. On second thought that is a very scary proposition with my very expensive glass in the first place. (countdown unintentional) Sometimes it is better to leave well enough alone.

Participantis there a differentiation between Street Lights and Parking Lot Lights?

ParticipantI saw some above who claimed 5 to 10 sec. I would think that at just about any aperature those would have very long trails. but the photos don’t look bad.

ParticipantMayhap madam but is that any reason to wink at me? 😀

ParticipantI wonder how many people are doing red staplers. I mean, they’re famous.
Was that an ethnic slur?

ParticipantOdd, what software are you using to do the resizing? Most packages are exif-aware and should preserve that information.
I use the Sigma software for the first part of saving the picture because if I try to open a x3f (Sigma raw) file in PS Cs2 it does some rather odd things with the colour, saturation and contrast that I have not yet learned to fix. It says it is using the camera presets but I know better. Then I save the pic in JPG format and I open it in PS CS2, now it doesn’t jack around with the appearance of my photo. I click on save for web, then upload to flickr. I link to the photo for the contest. I still have to be careful though because some photos give me an error message for the contest that says the photo is too big and I have to go back to photoshop and try again. My most recent photo of the Guitars took 4 trys and 1 screw up that I had to ask to be deleted.
On Tuesdays I just bring my lunch.

ParticipantCan anyone tell the difference? Might as well allow post processing filter to entire image. That’s ok by me, I really don’t care just wanted to bring it up before the flood.

ParticipantI probably should have been asking this question on Flickr in the first place 😳

ParticipantThank You very much. I have been cutting and pasting the info I get from right clicking on the image on flickr and selecting properties. It works but I don’t know if it was a violation or not.
Thanks again.
Ps Elsinore told me the same thing once but I didn’t understand it and didn’t want to admit how dumb I really am.QuickSilver
ParticipantDescription: Photos should have a dominant red theme. Difficulty: No blood.
Should addition be made to dificulty that no red filters applied in camera or in post. This could be done following the other guidelines because done to entire photo.
Something to think about.QuickSilver
ParticipantHmm I don’t see any exif data in your files–do you know/remember what kind of aperture and shutter speeds you were using? I like that first one, the colors are nifty. Were you using a tripod? The second one’s neat, though looks like maybe you could have gone with a slightly faster shutter speed and not gotten quite so much of the trailing, though some of that’s kinda nice, too.
I was using a tripod and I lose the exif data when I set up the picture to upload to flickr. All photos I have saved for web use are like that. The second shot was a finale firework and I intended to reset the shutter to longer to get more bursts at one time but I forgot. I went back to the original RAW and got this:
