The FSM is back now – sorry about that.

The Farktographer’s Over Time report shows the number of new people per contest, and the number of people that dropped out. For the last couple of contests, we picked up 60 newbies and looking at the chart, we appear to be on a bit of an up-trend since the “Happy Anniversary” zenith.

The FSM, however, only counts entries that have received a vote – it really only looks at the Results page. This could introduce some collective bias – some sort of aggregate “oh heck, there’s too many entries, I’ll stop voting” thought-process that every voter goes through. For what it is worth, the Distinct By Theme report seems to show a slight up-trend in the number of votenated entries.

What I’d really like to capture is the number of individual voters (and related stats), but that’s locked behind Fark.com somewhere.

1. How do you make things look like they’re on display? I’d like a uniform solution that would work with staplers of all sizes (roughly 5cm to 100cm). Is that even practical?

When I did my Eggs-Perimental photoshoot, I built a very simple “lightbox” out of a rectangular cardboard box, a brick, a black t-shirt, a white t-shirt and a plastic milk bottle.

I cut two holes in the box – one on a long end (for the light source) and one on a short end (for the lens). Over the light-source hole, I put a cutout from the milk bottle (for a light diffuser). Opposite the lens-hole, I put down the brick and then put either a black or white t-shirt over the brick and the part of the box that would be in the frame. I got a shoplight to shine through the diffuser.

Then I put the eggs on the shirt-covered brick, closed the box so the only light was coming through my diffuser and shot away (I actually put my wedding ring on the brick under the shirt to act as an egg holder).

If I did it again, I’d probably cover the inside of the box with black felt (or other flocking material) to better control the internal reflections).

There’s a new report out on the FSM – it highlights the most recent contest’s Boobies and should update with each week. It is a “schnofo” production – props to staplermofo for punching up the exposition.

The lenses I used were 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye, 50 mm f/1.8, 35mm f/2 and 85 mm f/1.4.

Dude, that seems like some pricey glass. And that T/S you used in cityscapes couldn’t have been cheap. Me = envious.

I finally stumbled upon (well, stumbled after) the perfecto margarita mix.

Equal parts tequila (anejo or reposado), fresh lime juice and Cointreau. Shake, pour, splash of Gran Marnier. Drink. Rocks, no salt.
