I agree, it makes me feel better to have a lower number (plus I don’t want to look and see position 107 when I get another 1 voter :P)

I hear that! Thing is, after a bit of research, the current way is the way most “standings” are calculated (ref. Golf stats, NCAA College Football polls, &c.). The old way I’ve seen referenced as a “ranking”. Who knew?

“Standings” fit into a new set of stats I’m fiddling with better than “rankings” did, so I’m likely to keep it as is.

Check out the Scarlet AAAARRRRrrrrr… see educated’s entry? If you look at educated’s portfolio, you won’t find that entry in Shadows, but you will if you look in tea‘s.

With kmmontandon and now educated/tea, we have two in the top ten that are repeats. That’s too bad.

[edited to fix spelling of “AAAARRRRrrrrr”]

    ….stuff about kmmontandon‘s dupe…

Nice sleuthing. It would be super-duper cool if the FSM could visually inspect images to detect repeats. Anyone got a Java-based image analyzer?

    mikemikeb Something like this?

OK, that wasn’t too hard. Standings have been fixed as suggested, and I even FAQ’ed the change. Thanks for the suggestion.

We’ll see if the FSM survives the night.

Happy belated birthday, schnee! I checked onto your changes at the FSM; nice job.

However, I still find that there are ways to improve the search feature/portfolio view. First of all, I’d like to be able to switch the order of photos between place finish and number of votes. Secondly, I’d like the FSM to reflect tie votes in place finish. For example, the FSM lists my best finish as 7th place, when I really placed tied for tenth.

Thanks in advance for the changes!

    Are you British, by chance?

Born in (and have never left) the USA.

I place finishes the way that professional golf tournaments (including the American ones!) do. In terms of sporting events (and non-sporting events) based on large groups of participants that don’t follow a bracket, that’s about as official as it gets.

As a preview for what I hope to get in tomorrow, are you a bad typer? If so, you’ll love the new farktographer search…

Oooh, that looks interesting; thanks again in advance. Now if Drew could get the Fark profile search to work like that…

Dude, you ain’t even seen it yet…..

    thanks, and thanks

Love the feedback, keep it coming.

Regarding search, I’ve been thinking about that. Personally, I like place-finish and as part of the upgrade, I changed the ordering from votes to place-finish. When I did that, I thought that I probably should expose a method to allow folks to sort based on their fancy. Gotta figure out how to reconcile that with the URI access. It is doable and I’ll try to get something out sometime.

Secondly, I’d like the FSM to reflect tie votes in place finish. For example, the FSM lists my best finish as 7th place, when I really placed tied for tenth.

Are you British, by chance? The way I count it, you tied for 7th because there are 6 different scoring buckets higher than yours. The way you count it, 9 people had more votes than you so you get 10th. I considered accounting for the gaps and discarded that solution (I had to pick something). I may or may not get to this one.

Thanks for the b-day wishes everyone (and for the present that some anonymous sponsor sent my way)!

I did wind up doing something nice for me – my oldest son taught me how to ride my new bike, I went and watch a highschool volleyball match and then I went to a nice dinner with Mrs. Schnee.

I’ve had excellent results using a red-dot gun sight to track moving photo targets.

Yeah, that might not be such a good idea at or near government institutions. Plus, a lot of people may get quite skittish when there’s a red dot pointed at or near them. I don’t want anybody confused for an assassin.

The red-dot sight does not project a laser dot onto the target. It is a “reflex viewer”: a small red-dot is projected on a semi-transparent screen inside the sight (the black cylinder part of the image to the right of “battery”. Looking through the sight, one merely has to keep the dot on the target (which is visible through the semi-transparent screen).

Encyclopedia Galactica: that is a nifty technique! I’m going to have to move equipment from my telescope kit to my camera kit and play around

but i am in no way, shape or form even a little bit catholic. or even religious. OR spiritual.

Ah, man. I’m associating with a bunch of heathens?!?!! You know what kind of forms I now have to fill out?

    NCA1024.7x – Non-Catholic Association Form, v 1024
    HC5-f – Heathen Contact Form, v 5
FIW42.p – False Idoltry Worshipper Report, rev. 42

In triplicate! And then I have to say 17 Hail Mary’s!

Faster shutter speeds will lead to less blur overall – you’ll need to balance that against the desired background blur.

Pan with the car, and be sure to “follow-through” (keep tracking the vehicle for a second or two after you’ve tripped the shutter).

    Practice, Practice, Practice.
