ParticipantI shot film as recently as two years ago. I settled on Provia 400 for slide, and Sensia (whatever ISO) for negatives.
Provia is an awesome (and awesomely expensive) film – high ISO (for transparencies) and a really really small grain. But, it is slide film. Unless you have a well calibrated light meter (built in or otherwise), you can’t be much more than a 1/3 stop off in either direction.
If you are shooting landscapes (you are not), Velvia is nice, but it is ISO100 (or 50!) and renders flesh tones terribly.
Sensia is probably equivalent to a Kodak in the same ISO. As sleeping alludes to, I typically rated ISO 400 at 320. That tended to make the negatives nice and “thick”.

Participanttemp fix in place, no auto-updates for a bit

ParticipantThat is sad. orionid, I’m sorry for the loss.

ParticipantOK, sorry for the teaser. Watch this space tomorrow and I’ll throw up a listing (we probably has a forum section appropriate).

ParticipantIMHO the best dslr on the market right now is the Canon 5D mark II.
Nah, the D700. But I guess if you have to shoot Canon the 5D mk II will have to do.
I just made a decision between those two systems. It seems to me that either way, the photographer would be very happy. The Canon and Nikon seem to have very close performance ISO wise. The Canon brings a kajillion pixels and 1080P video; Nikon has superb AF. It probably depends on a particular photographer’s typical camera use and likely subjects.
/anyone want to buy some Canon lenses?

ParticipantYeah, the MAN changed my IP address. Back now, yes?

ParticipantI remember millera9 when… 🙂

ParticipantI have one (the Zoom). It is pretty handy when I don’t want to haul my full-sized tripod around. I have a ballhead that I mount on the top which seems to help with the usability. I’ve mounted a full-frame DSLR on it with a 70-200 zoom. That is pushing the limit of what it is stable with. The body with a 50mm prime is no problem.
It is pretty stable but not as much as its bigger kin. I also use it to put off-camera flash in different places. It is versatile and convenient.

ParticipantWow, I was just tweaking my workflow and wound up embedding the wrong profile. I didn’t notice it b/c I was viewing in color-space aware apps. Once uploaded, it was obvious.
ProPhoto RGB Colorspace:

sRGB Colorspace:

if they look darn similar, then you’ve got an interesting browser – one that is profile aware. On my Firefox, the ProPhoto one is much darker.
Bigger versions available here, but really, there’s nothing there that you haven’t seen before.

ParticipantI’ve sort of noticed that too. I’ve always chalked it up to JPEG-ery. JPEG is not lossless and my theory is that when I upload an already lossy JPEG to a host, that host re-compresses it (for resizing or just because it can) and during the recompression, the image shifts.
I haven’t researched the topic, however. A simple test would be to upload, download the uploaded and compare with the original.

ParticipantI think I’m the only one on here who can’t bring himself to take a camera into a cemetery.
I was a little weirded out when I did it. But then I thought about me hanging out with of all the weird folks here, what with their office-supply fetishes and the like. On my personal weirdness spectrum, grave photography is pretty low.
schnee
ParticipantWe were trying to get something kind of like this picture of the model on the gravestone,
I’ve seen women with hot @$$es before, but that’s a bit ridiculous.

ParticipantFWIW, the f/1.4 won the Fartography Mmmmm Bokeh contest. It is a nice lens and I’m finding it on my body more and more – small, fast, light, fun. I’ve heard it is the lens Canon uses as its color reference, but I can’t vouch for that.
OTOH, the f/1.8 is pretty inexpensive.

ParticipantI love this thread soooo much. Thanks everyone! I had hoped to riff Zapruder, but couldn’t put it together (happy-happy joy-joy dance when I saw soosh’s). Then I thought “Oh, Beatles” and tried to do the John and Yoko image on the bed, but my posers weren’t bendy enough. I got a little abstract.
And, I’m cool with the McD’s images, in case anyone asks.

ParticipantI was thinking more along the lines of printing out one of warhol’s soup cans, pasting that onto an actual can, and then photographing that being obviously three-dimensional.
Actually. I like that idea too. And it doesn’t feel slimy. I mean, it is not like you’d be trying to ‘get away with something’.
Yeah, I think that would be fine. Good idea.
