ParticipantI have been playing around with trying to get HDR to work – most images seem to have some weird artifacts in them though but I put that down to using jpgs instead of RAW files.
It seems that the Photomatix 2.3 beta 14 has an undocumented feature that lets you make HDR photos without the watermark on them (they have also added an extra way of adjusting the HDR image)

ParticipantThere was a discussion on this recently on the Sydney Morning Herald site with a lot of good comments about what you should do (for both sides – public place so just shoot or be nice and ask permission fisrt)
Fortunately I haven’t encountered this problem (I have only had the opposite where they see I have a camera and want photos taken!) but I’m in the camp of you are in a public place then you can’t expect people not to take your photo*.
* This is assuming you are taking photos for personal use, if it was for advertising /profit then that is different as you could mis-represent those people, plus I think you need releases for legal reasons.

Participantabsolutely! we can have it as a theme, and as a matter of fact i’m thinking of pushing ‘autumn’ back a couple of weeks because i didn’t consider indian summer or that not everyone’s fall hits at the same time. we could totally do an HDR theme to fill in the gap.
the issue up for voting is whether or not HDR images should be allowed in every contest…
Yay!! I was in trouble for the Autumn contest as I’m on the wrong side of the planet 😛
I voted no, like most others it seems, as I feel the HDR images look a lot better than the same photograph taken without HDR (at least in the examples I have seen from chakalakasp and others) and therefore creating an unfair advantage.

ParticipantWouldn’t it be possible to have a HDR contest instead ever so often? That way everyone is on an even playing field in that too.

ParticipantAww it actually made more sense to me to count it the way you did before….but I may be the only one 😉
I agree, it makes me feel better to have a lower number (plus I don’t want to look and see position 107 when I get another 1 voter :P)

Participantwhat do you mean ‘ruined by shadows’? as in portions of the picture are way too dark? or there are shadows in unfortunate places? or are the shadows making faces and flipping off the camera?
😀
yes to portions of the picture being too dark (I would consider shadows flipping me off to be a great picture, but I’m wierd like that :P)
I was trying to take pictures of my flatmates but there seemed to be a shadow blocking one face or the other.
I also noticed that some photos seem to give off a more lifelike feel with the same settings so I was wondering if there was a rule about having the sun in x position in relation to the camera, or it was those subtle changes that the camera likes to make (think you are smarter than me do you *shakes fist*)

I should get totalfark membership! I just fear I will get even less work done than I do now 😛

ParticipantOn topic – I’m not sure if I have got this weeks challenge right. I went to wiki to look up the description but that didn’t help too much.
i’m thinking of it as environmental portraits – people doing what they do, or shots of a certain sort of lifestyle, etc. like….a construction worker on a jobsite. or a CPA at a computer (oooo, exciting!). or a student in the library. or a ski instructor teaching. something like that.
Thats what I was afraid of, I read headshots in the portrait wiki and ran with that (at the expense of more detail about the person)

Participantproblem with that is, if you show a guy with a hammer you think
carpenter
or you show a guy with a scalpel you think doctor
but if you show a guy picking a pocket, how are you supposed to know whether it’s a congressman or a lawyer?
Dead intern? Ambulance? Okay that was lame, but your joke did remind me of an old favorite.
What’s the difference between a pickpocket and a peeping Tom?
One snatches watches…
yeah?
i dont get it…
.
one snatches watches, the other watches … well you can figure it out 😛
