I just found out that the county that I live in does have a fair. We’re half suburban hell and tend to forget about the rural parts of the county, despite the fact that the hold-outs still grow corn on their as-yet-undeveloped land between subdivisions. I’ve missed three so far?maybe I have some older county fair prints somewhere?
October 31, 2011 at 6:41 pm #41316bandyParticipantBandy yes a city fair is fine. What’s a Maker Faire?
Whoa, a virgin! A Maker Faire is put on by Make Magazine … which is part of the do-it-yourself revival (cf. Instructibles on YouTube). People working in anything from fibers to metals, often repurposing something.
At a Maker Faire, you’ll find vendors hawking their stuff (think: electronic kits to custom-made guitars), a local bicycle advocacy group with their human-powered carnival rides, soldering lessons, people racing highly-modified Power Wheels cars (the kind kids drive around), etc. The two big ones are in New York and (just south of) San Francisco, and there are also a few other local Mini Maker Faires scattered about the country. Kansas City’s went full-sized this year, housed in (and next to) Union Station.

By my read, a city fair would be ok, too, yes?
How about shots from a Maker Faire?

October 25, 2011 at 3:37 pm #41197bandyParticipantI have a funny feeling that my series on dead insects (squished, poisoned, and/or trapped & starved) would be a Bozo No-No.
😈October 23, 2011 at 7:25 pm #40289bandyParticipantI do have a light meter–an old one, one of the estate sale finds. I noticed when using it last time that it gave me readings that came out too dark–but then, if the lenses are dirty, or the shutter is sticky…there’s some learning curves I’ll need to toy with.
Unless the meter was kept in the dark (does it have a large-ish front surface with raised dots/bubbles on it? If so, it’s a Selenium meter and ? is no longer to be trusted) inside of a closet or cabinet, it probably does not work reliably.
Film has a wider range of exposure latitude than does a digital sensor, so you can eyeball most of the time and come out looking good. Don’t forget that you can scan your negs and fix them up in post, of course.
The shutter is likely a little sticky. Don’t bother loading film in and just cock and fire it over and over, say at 1/100th of a second. You should be able to hear the difference as the old lubrication gets un-gummed and it starts working well enough. The slow speeds are likely to be useless, but down to 1/30th, you should be able to hear/time that yourself. Once you have the shutter rolling well, then it’s time to go out and shoot.
October 23, 2011 at 7:19 pm #32961bandyParticipantI have 60’s vintage Leica 50mm F2 Dual Range Summicron.
Actually, you can date your lens quite easily here: http://www.antiquecameras.net/leicamlenses.html.
October 22, 2011 at 4:06 pm #41159bandyParticipantbandy just blur the shot, mark it as nsfw and link to the original. I’ve done it 😉
A good way to get the sympathy vote, no doubt. Actually my favorite self-shot has something round in it that’s not me.
October 21, 2011 at 8:09 pm #41154bandyParticipantRound? That’d be a full-body self-portrait. Somehow, I think that someone would end up deleting it, if not using the ban hammer on me, especially if I posted a near-nude.
October 7, 2011 at 3:37 pm #40762bandyParticipantAn animal in a zoo is not a pet? A “wild” animal kept in a restricted zone, owned by a person, isn’t a pet?
Pet: (of an animal or bird) Kept as a pet: “a pet cat”.
Noun: 1.A domestic or tamed animal or bird kept for companionship or pleasure and treated with care and affection. So, no.
An animal in a zoo is not a pet. A “wild” animal kept in a restricted zone, owned by a person, isn’t a pet.I have never had to sign page after page of waivers, sit through a 2 hour safety briefing, or initial a 2 page list of behaviors that would be likely to trigger a predatory response and would definitely cause me to be removed from the area for the safety of the trainers, the photographers, and the animal. To photograph someone?s ?pet?.
Anyone that believes they can keep a large predator for a pet is a Darwin Award waiting to happen and what Fark headlines are made of.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to come off sounding like an asshole. I’ve been up all night working on a production issue in our code.
De nada.

Technically… […] Otherwise it would have been a thread of squirrel and backyard bird photos
And raccoons, and opossums, and deer, and snakes, and buffalo, and chipmunks, and beavers, and alligators, and lizards, and salamanders, and fish, and woodchucks, and nutria, and other-than-backyard birds.
In the Silicon Valley (proper), I’ve shot red-tailed hawks, salamanders, and a possum, not to mention all sorts of shore-birds. I haven’t shot (but have seen) raccoons, lizards, deer, snakes (usually dead), and the usual assortment of West-Coast songbirds. I made the special trip (hour-long drive) out to A?o Nuevo to see the seal breeding grounds, but any trip of length down CA-1 is bound to spot seals of some sort lolling on the beach.
Wildlife is all around us ? we just have to keep an eye out for it.
