ParticipantNice set!
Just remember – at the moment you snap that picture, people are inanimate objects, too… as long as you’re not shooting long exposures, anyway.

ParticipantWhatever happened to a good old bucket of saltpeter and charcoal?
Needs sulphur.

ParticipantI just had a brilliant idea for soosh, if you’ll pardon the pun.
One of these should put out just a little less light than a white flare – and is reusable.

ParticipantIt’d be interesting to see what a 1,000 candlepower or so torch would look like filtered. Maybe you could build something like a lightbox and put the light inside it pointing up… Just with anything that big you don’t want to actually put a filter on the light itself because something is gonna melt – filter definitely & flashlight probably.
It shouldn’t.
Many filters are made specifically for theatrical lighting – lights that get so hot you can’t move them while they’re on without welder’s gloves and an apron.

Participantsoosh wrote:I’ll have to look into that. Thanks. You know any names of marine supply houses?
There should be quite a few in/around Juneau – Western Auto Marine, for example.
Pretty much any boating supply house should have ’em in stock. Red, orange, white, and green seem to be the most available.

Participantfor night stuff, take off the filter.
I’d add that putting a lens hood on will also help control lens flare and ghosting.

ParticipantI’d love to find a white road flare. That would truly rock.
Have you considered any of the flashbulbs that the spelunkers prefer for cave photography?
Also, many different colors of signal flare are available from marine supply houses – the white handheld flare is typically used for collision avoidance signaling.

ParticipantYeah, I’m guilty of the “kid pic” (and the occasional lack of artistic taste). But they’re THERE. Y’know? Just waiting to be photographed. Plus I just plain like to take those pics. The snapshot with something more to it than just a snapshot.
Oh, believe me – I know the feeling.
It’s like the half-naked chicks. They just show up, begging for photographs.
(And, no, I’m not joking…)

ParticipantRent a lens?
http://www.rentglass.com has the Nikon 80-400mm for $52/wk, and the Canon 100-400mm for $49/wk.
They’ve also got the Sigma 50-500mm for Canon for $45/wk.
http://www.cameralensrentals.com lists approximately the same prices.

ParticipantIn fact, I’m not going to ever point out any specific examples, but it’s rare that my favorites of any given contest are the crowd favorites, and there’s always something very popular that just doesn’t resonate with me at all.
It’s *Fark*.
You were expecting artistic taste?
caradoc
ParticipantNot nearly as much a cheap shot as cute children or kittens, I think…
caradoc
ParticipantI like your shot, wrayvynn.

I hope your DNS servers have been patched for the cache poisoning issue.
