If this isn’t a good place to post this, I preemptively apologize for it 🙂

    Thanks!

he’s being polite enough, but his comments are very general and he is asking at large..

he is giving me the impression that he views all the photographs here as a viable heap of talent

    grain and fuzz

it’s intesesting to see photographs that have no grain and no depth of field, in the portrait contest you cold tell that my photos were shot on film and that it was 400 speed or greater

ouside in the daylight our iris constricts the pupil to a small size, this means that our eyes have become pinhole cameras with almost infinate depth of field

also, when we look at things we never see them come into focus, so everything seems to be sharp

until you need readers, then everything is fuzzy

    sorry, i’m against it completely

i have photographs on my website which are deeply personal to me
that i never want to be availible to a stock company..

i know already of a website which is hotlinking one such photo, and one of the most painfull moments of my life is being used by a rightwing nut to foment a politcal view i abhore completly, yet i am reluctant to remove or rename the photo because members of my family also look at it…

this reminds me that once i say yes i lose all artistic control over my pictures

i’m concerned also with how you see the photographs, your perception is that the photographs here are all in one large clump

the rules set out at the beginning of the contest specifically point out that the photograph’s copyright belong to the photographer, yet you are looking for a way to make those photographs availible to your company, which you don’t want to name..

the enthusiasm of the contests would probably be dampened if folks were looking over their shoulders

maybe it would be better if you left an ad saying that you work for a stock comany and ask anyone interested to contact you, and leave farktography.net out of the loop

according to one club i was in in millbrae ca; a portrait is pretty much any posed picture, while a grabshot is something off the cuff where the subject probably doesnt know he’s being shot, or if he does know he’s being photographed he doesnt have time or oportunity to pose, this distiction was made because when you have 30 photographers and 4 weeks of meetings you might as well have as many different types of contests as possible

in our club (farktography.net) it doesn’t matter a whit, but some clubs with judging make the distinction

when i organised my website i had to weed out some grabshots that i classified as portraits, and some portraits that i classified as grabshots … just to conform as much as possible to the definitions i’d learned

yesterday i was in a forum talking about the difference between headshots for models vs headshots for actors…

some people are sticklers for detail…

since you were aware that your belly was being photographed (or if you were the photographer your subject was aware that she was being photographed and posed) it would be a portrait under that definition…

    /bored out of my mind

    //is it 5:00 pst yet…

i think headshots would be fine, too – it’s a pretty loose category….

    any other thoughts on that?

    😛

headshots would be the norm i’d expect, i just did a google of portrait, all headshots…

The problem is that I have no idea how to do it. If any of you belong to a club please give me some pointers. The closest club to me is over an hour and a half away so I believe there is a need.

i just googled ‘how to start a photography club..’

some tips there.. does craigslist reach out your way?

is there a jr college with photography classes, camera stores you could leave fliers at

contact the ‘close’ camera clubs and see if they have members or friends in your area

organise shoots of the cool places where you live, unless you live in some place like indiana – then you’re screwed

problem with that is, if you show a guy with a hammer you think

    carpenter

or you show a guy with a scalpel you think doctor

but if you show a guy picking a pocket, how are you supposed to know whether it’s a congressman or a lawyer?

Dead intern? Ambulance? Okay that was lame, but your joke did remind me of an old favorite.

What’s the difference between a pickpocket and a peeping Tom?

    One snatches watches…

    yeah?

    i dont get it…

just a general opinion question – i have some shots that i consider to be portraits even though it’s not a photo of someone’s face. for example – a ballet dancer’s feet. or a pregnant woman’s belly. ok, those are the two that i have. 😛

what are peoples’ thoughts on that? i feel that it captures the essence of what that person is doing at that time – their character and the place they are in their life at that moment, which (to me) qualifies it as a portrait.

It would become a hunt for votes instead of a forum for sharing cool photo ideas. Think “Top 40 radio.”

    Yeah, what he said.

or.. it makes you, the photographer, think about what works in a picture and what dont

Clearly I’m not a pro, but I don’t think I know what works in a picture. By posting three and comparing votes, I’m slowly beginning to understand why my lousy picture was so much better than the one I really liked.

Maybe this isn’t the place to be learning. That would be a shame, though, because I can’t get anywhere near as many objective eyeballs anywhere else.

not to be cynical at all, this is the funnerest photo club.. my favorite time of the week is 5 pm pst, but… well, you’re just climitizing yourself to what people who think fark is a good place to go for a photo contest think is a good picture…

one should post 1 or 2 pictures that you believe in rather than average yourself out…

there’s all those prior contests to look through, go to a contest, scan the pics, guess the winner, look at the results…

weds contest should be give it your best shot -1 entry, sat night could be 3 because people have more time too look.

That’s an idea I like. “Best Shot” contests and a second contest with the usual 3 entries per submitter.

Same topic, just a couple days apart. And maybe disallow the reuse of the “Best Shot” pic in the other contest…

i hadn’t thought of it that way, but that’s a gooder idea of a good idea

Did you follow Alice down the rabbit hole that morning? 😉

    i forgot to add

a couple weeks later i went lookinmg for ‘erica’, i went to a nearby pet store that sold live food for snakes.. when i went there i showed a picture to some guy behind the cash register

the guy i was talking to turned around and yelled to the back room

biiillliiieee, some guy is here, he’s lookiing for your giiiirrrll friend’

    billy yeslled back

shutup mothrfkr.. you know i hate that thing

when i went back to look at the pics again i thought that they were man boobie nipples…

then a week later i came home to a message on my ansering machine from ‘erica’ inviting me to the folsom street fair…

so, no i didn’t go near that rabbit hole…

The great thing about 3 submissions per contest is that it permits more experimentation. If a lower limit is established, only “safe” shots will be posted.

It would become a hunt for votes instead of a forum for sharing cool photo ideas. Think “Top 40 radio.”

or.. it makes you, the photographer, think about what works in a picture and what dont

as a matter of fact,i’ve had shoots where i have taken 200 shots and sifted through til i found 1 gudun, i’m used to looking through 200 pictures.. it’s hard to do if you are semi-trained, a farktography contest with 300 plus pictures?

after the 1st 150 or so i stop looking at pictures and start looking at names… for instance if i knew someone lived in the same town in connecticut that i went to high school in, i’d look for her pictures

and voting has dropped off since there have been so many pictures to sift through anyways…

weds contest should be give it your best shot -1 entry, sat night could be 3 because people have more time too look

in a good photography club with judging:

a)there are people who show up to look at their friends pictures and show their own
b)there are people who show up to look at their friends pictures and show their own, and want to win the judging

maybe its time to revisit the idea of limiting entries to 2. with 360+ posts a contest they are getting a little cumbersome to sort through.

or maybe we should add a contest.

or maybe I’m just bitter because my photos are so far down nobody saw them.

    i think both..

i asked this question once, and verusca kindly did a poll, which i never saw actually

i had several shots for this week’s contest, i wanted to post several but circumstances forced me to pick just one, turns out i picked a good one

sometimes i think that having too many pictures in a thread takes away from the votes you might get for a single picture, where someone sees a good entry they might say, i’ll vote for this one, but when they see 3 from one person they might vote for 1 of the three and spread their enthusiasm for you semi arbitrarily

a weekend contest would be good too…
