ParticipantThe folks in an astronomy forum I frequent pretty much all had the same opinion: “Crap. Why can’t this stuff happen during a new moon?”

ParticipantI have been nothing but pleased with this lens since I got it and it is the budget version too.
Looks like it’s well worth the price… beats my budget 75-300mm all to heck for sharp focus and color correction. Those UD elements make a big difference. No idea on humidity vs CA, but ow humidity usually means really transparent air. I’ve got the low humidity here, but the constant wind and turbulence normally puts the seeing into the mediocre category. It’s actually kind of neat to watch stars change color rapidly, but it doesn’t help much for imaging.

ParticipantNice clean, crisp lack of CA. The edges on the full-size image are sharp black/white… no sign of halos at all…

Participantloki, what lens did you use on that? Nice and sharp… I took a few of the moon through a big break in the clouds after the pic I posted above, but I haven’t looked at them yet…

Participantre HDR Hole: HDR is a great tool, but all of the pre-packaged toolkits out there present a GUI that makes it “easy” to get results (results, of course, vary) without the user having the need or the desire to create a “non-obvious” HDR image. When you stop wanting the HDR effect, and are more concerned about reducing halos and other artifacts in your image, you start to dig into the concept and implementation of HDR.
Gentle use of tonemapping is a start, since that’s the thing that peeps think when they hear “HDR”. Hell, you don’t even have to tonemap to use HDR….

Participant^seconded.

ParticipantYa know, for everyone being in a big rush to get some last minute ideas, there sure are a lot of great shots in this bunch.

Participanta bunch of folks will jump in here and recommend dedicated macro lenses but for my money i’d rather do ext tubes.
^that. I’ve got a cheap set, enjoying them.

ParticipantOK, so scratch the watch and the computer screen pixels…. I’m gonna have to get busy today, I think. Talk about last-minute prep!

Participantdid some digging… that’s actually an f/8 (which puts the dimensions more in line… over 6000mm fl at f/.8 would give you a primary objective along the lines of 25 feet in diameter)…
chupathingie
Participantthat would be soooo awesome under dark skies…..

Participanthahaha… did they tick the photog off? “Wait til they get home and see this!”
