Ditto here on the unusually cloudy. Although we’ve been clear here most of the summer, seeing has been horrible (haze and dust mostly, often smoke). There’s something south of town I’ve been itching to get a shot of with the milky way as a backdrop, but I’ve had no luck.

So no Perseids for us, but we did drag table and chairs out into the front yard to watch a very flashy thunderstorm pass by friday…

(A visit to the dollar store, and a piece cut from a chinese-style plastic ‘to go’ container.)

Oooohhhh…. that one came out very nice! I especially like the way the texture transforms the archway into irregular cut stone…

    Cool stuff!

BTW, the coma on that mirror would make it just this side of useless for imaging. Coma correctors are available, but I’ve never seen one for anything faster than f4. Still though, that’s just begging for a project.

DSOs are mostly disappointing visually, that’s why we call them “faint fuzzies”. There’s no substitute for time spent gathering photons so you can see the detail. It gets worse when they’re small objects in the sky… now all of a sudden you need 2000mm at f4 to get details in any normal time span unless you’ve got access to Plamadude’s toys.

As to filtering, normally all you ever see on that front is an LPR filter; and only then when someone is shooting from within populated areas to block sodium wavelengths or block all but h-alpha (which is a nice trick, it works even with a full moon). Most images are the result of good seeing and large aperture, but digital allows you to combine many exposures to increase the signal/noise ratio far beyond what a long film exposure can manage. My Ring shot was about 20 3-minute exposures, and I had to throw half out for tracking errors. This was maybe 7-8 years ago and I played with an idea that I had bounced around for a while that has since become known as “drizzling”, but my hand-made attempts are not nearly as good as what’s available now.

Thanks, Rav. I really should get out and do some more AP, even tho I still don’t have the Losmandy I’m jonesin’ for. I have much better glass at my disposal now, plus a step up from 6MP to 21MP… but good lord, that old Edmund Scientific mount I’ve got has an inspection sticker signed by Barney Rubble.

(Just try to find the Ring Nebula without GPS controls–it ain’t easy–and I never could)

I finally found it with my first DSLR and a 300mm lens…

Yeah, I know, cheap glass, but a dim, small object and I was pretty proud to manage even this image 😆

    . . . don’t make me talk about that.

I get the feeling that a couple drinks would cure that 😉 My geology teacher in 9th grade was the most infectious science zealot you’d ever want to meet. “Geology”, he said, “is universal. Anywhere in the whole of the universe where matter accumulates you will find geology.” Can’t argue with that, and I never stumped him with a sample that I couldn’t identify.

/and yes, you can talk about that…

    I would watch that.

Ditto… just last night I was toying mentally with the idea of a ballon carrying my powershot to dizzying heights, but I’d need to work on some tracking apparatus. I could build a transmitter easily enough, and I know a few HAMs with all the receiving gear I could need.

I wouldn’y launch from near here, tho; with my luck it would drop inside Pantex and I’d be getting a visit from some clean-cut gentlemen in black Suburbans.

Seriously, the Moss-Magnuson act is a Godsend.

Also, where were you on this job posting a month ago when I was mailing out resume’s all over the country?

I had to look that one up! 😆

Hey, I’d have posted earlier but we just found out today. If the economy would pick up some steam, we might be looking for some more before too long. I want a n00b or 2 to train. They’ll have 15 years to get up to my speed and train whoever replaces me when I retire…

edit: You’d pass that exam, I know how they taught you in nuke school…
