ParticipantCount me as another who went TF for Farktography. And Lord Ezekiel. And SaintDiluted, at least for a month 😉
And me.

ParticipantI don’t normally shoot RAW, but I’ve done a little experimentation with JPG files and have gotten good results.
It’s easy to create an HDR image from a single JPG if you change the levels in the original. It’s probably simpler to show what I did…
***
This is the original unedited JPG straight out of the camera.

***
This is that image with decreased levels (i.e. underexposed)

***
And this is the image with increased levels (i.e. overexposed)

Photomatix asks you to provide an exposure interval if it can’t determine from the EXIF (which it can’t in this example).
***
And here is the final product, the calculated HDR – all from a single frame and little judicious level adjusting.

Now every frame can be an HDR frame! And the relative value of that Photomatix software just went way up. Time to buy a license…

ParticipantI use PS CS2 9 and don’t have a problem with it. Why is it not an option?
Because it costs too much and I don’t like their security measures.

ParticipantAre you sure it’s the LaCie device? It could just be the HDD it contains. Those can be swapped easily enough…

ParticipantEncyclopedia Galactica: That’s super. Is that *the* American Gothic house?
Yes, that’s *the* house. It’s not terribly far from me. I have several other parody ideas that are in the works… 😉

Participanti take it to mean it should scream: Andre Kertesz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ansel Adams …
Please, oh please don’t anybody imitate Mapplethorpe!
But seriously, I would love to see a lot of long exposure shots, surrealism, minimalism, etc. Not necessarily some individual artist’s style, but a strong representation of an artistic philosophy or technique.

ParticipantThis cute kids one is killing me. … How the heck are the the rest of you childless doing it?
By hoping I find some juvenile goats to photograph. Kids are kids, right?

Participant…for example, you might want the car body to be crisp but the wheels still moving, so back off that 1/1000 to 1/640 maybe.
1/640 may be a little quick for relatively slow targets like a car. I set my shutter to 1/400, ISO80 for airshow pics and it works really well. It’s fast enough to freeze the planes but slow enough that propellers have that motion blur.

ParticipantPlus, a lot of people may get quite skittish when there’s a red dot pointed at or near them.
Don’t ask how I know, but a gunsight laser (like you’re thinking of) works like crap in daylight. That’s all Hollywood drama anyway, they’re only good for a few yards before they either fade out too much or shake like crazy from your slightest movement.
A cheap little sight and a hotshoe adapter is all it takes. Align the dot in the sight with the center of your viewfinder at maximum zoom, and you’re all set.

ParticipantI’ve had excellent results using a red-dot gun sight to track moving photo targets. Having both eyes open and on the target makes handheld tracking intuitive.
Examples:

The red-dot sight:

Participantthis means (and i’ve done it) that you can unscrew a lampshade, put
your camera in it’s place, set the auto timer, and get in the pic..That’s hilarious. I have a couple of lamps that are replicas of surveyor’s tripods, so that would work perfectly…

Participantweds contest should be give it your best shot -1 entry, sat night could be 3 because people have more time too look.
That’s an idea I like. “Best Shot” contests and a second contest with the usual 3 entries per submitter.
Same topic, just a couple days apart. And maybe disallow the reuse of the “Best Shot” pic in the other contest…
August 25, 2006 at 1:28 pm #5676Encyclopedia Galactica
ParticipantThe great thing about 3 submissions per contest is that it permits more experimentation. If a lower limit is established, only “safe” shots will be posted.
It would become a hunt for votes instead of a forum for sharing cool photo ideas. Think “Top 40 radio.”

Participantwow, that’s just simply brilliant! Well done *golf clap*
Danke schoen. Just the other night I added an on/off switch and a smaller internal battery. Now to improve the mounting solution…
