Well at least we know Big Cats have good taste in hardware.

Yeah, the lion knows it’s crap, so it’s helping move the process along 😯 😈 😯 😯

We would have also accepted “Lions tend to pick off the weak stragglers, the inferior specimens doomed to fail.”

    /No wait, I didn’t mean that, I’m a Canon-ite
    //Also, I drive a ford.

+1, and I love this photography (having done some myself), though it may be harder for the more casual folks to participate.

Yes and you’re quite good at it. 😀

The drops don’t have to be moving when captured, static works as well

/Maybe I wasn’t clear enough when I wrote it up.
    //Pun fully intended.

Don’t know if anyone noticed but it looks like “llevrok” has five entries voting enabled.

fluffybunny I am stupid in love with “Little Creatures”. At first I thought it was a photoshop, but as I looked, I could tell that the shadows were too perfect for that. Great concept and photo.

Which ain’t to say that all the other entries aren’t terrific also. This thread is yet another one that brought out the “Awesome” in all y’all.

No shooping here, I knows the rules :D, and thanks for the compliment. I was a little concerned that it wasn’t a “real” forest going in but it seems to be doing reasonably well. I had a lot of fun coming up with the idea and then implementing it. It’s just plastic toys, broccoli, cotton balls and poster board. Loosely inspired by the visual style of Wes Anderson, one of my favorite “moving picture” directors.

I would give my left testicle for a Leica, since it is the slacker testicle and really does nothing but watch football and eat cheeze doodles, but I would not pay the exorbitant prices for a Leica.

I understand (though don’t agree with) the high prices for Leica. I was trying to find the simplest camera used by an excellent photographer but ran out of time and it was the closest I could get.

My general take on any tool is I like it to be capable of producing better work than I can. That way I can grow into it.

I had a guy once tell me I could never take a “good picture” until I bought a 5D.

Some of them are down right dicks about it. I’ve never heard a writer cut another writer down because of the pen they use, but I hear it with cameras.

Most of the people I run with IRL photog wise are all just as amateur as I am, so very much like here we learn a lot from each other.

Most of my friends are writers, designers or academics and the infusion of their out of field creativity is way more stimulating than a bunch of photographers sitting around grousing over equipment

This. I try to keep an open mind about most things and part of the fun I derive from photography is the inspiration I receive from others, regardless of their background.

I think there should be at least one, probably two persons in my RL microcosm genuinely interested in learning/sharing something, strictly speaking about photography. I just haven’t met them yet. On the other hand, I’m becoming a better observer, now I can almost instantly sense it when people just want to talk about themselves. Yes, that’s not bad or good, it just is. It occurred to me that maybe I too wanted to talk about myself, which is why I decided to just play along, and if/when needed, engage.

I have a few people that I enjoy being around and conversing with when it comes to photography IRL and I consider myself to be very fortunate (this community of course is outstanding but does not count for IRL because internets and all).

Sorry for the grumpy/pessimistic/realistic mood, it’s been a hell of a week. ^_^

Sorry to hear that, we all have them from time to time. Hope it gets better.

I too am tempted to give up on “people” in general but I try to remain optimistic. So my strategy has become to lead off with the deflection if needed (“lucky” being one subset of that suite of strategies), however I try to remain a good observer. The more interest or talent a person displays the more likely I am to engage with them. Most people want to talk about themselves, that’s neither good nor bad. People in general do not learn or change unless they want to. We see and hear what we want. Sometimes in the extreme. Being objective is (IMHO) the single most difficult this a human being can attempt to do.

I’ve been there but it was as a kid. For a kid it was awesome so that’s how I remember it. I’m sure it’s changed in terms of tours and areas available but I would recommend it, I’d like to go back again some day.

Would it be in poor taste to say after making sure you and yours are okay, to go out and take awesome photos of the carnage?

I have seen people’s reaction to this (disaster tourists),.. it’s not pretty and I can certainly understand. They have nothing left and may have lost family and friends. It’s walking that line between journalism and voyeurism. I think on balance I would opt out as well. I know the stories of these people are important, and maybe if I could approach them with a common understanding of a specific goal I could do it, but to just wander around with a camera would make me feel dirty.

I drove through Joplin several weeks afterwards and I felt bad just doing that. I guess since journalism’s not my gig I find it hard to justify.

OK… late next month we return to the Adirondacks, and each campsite has its own mini-beach, so I don’t have to worry so much about the proverbial cop. If the weather holds out I’ll try both approaches. Last year I think I had too open an f-stop as a 30-minute exposure looked like a day-time shot with really smooth water and stars dotting the sky. Given that we’ll be there 10 days, if the skies cooperate, I’ll be able to practice both kinds.

The one issue is charging battery as we have no power or water. I always feel kinda creepy hanging around the bathroom/shower waiting for the batteries to charge. That’s also the reason I probably won’t be staying on a mountain-top for night shots on my 4+ High Peak Overnight Adventure.*

*I’m planning on climbing all 4 peaks in the Seward Range east of Tupper Lake, and I’m staying overnight. If I do the 4 in one day, Santononi and a couple other High Peaks are near enough for me to give the old college try. With the Marcy hike planned with my niece, I might, if all goes well, knock off 8 or more of 46 High Peaks. I will at least be bagging 6 this summer.

My answer to the long exposure / battery charge problem is to use a “jump starter” (12 volt dc gel cell in a pretty package with a cigarette lighter socket) coupled with a dc adapter for my camera. Hook it all up and you can keep the shutter open all night, recharge your normal camera battery (with a 12vdc compatible charger), run/charge a laptop, run a telescope and so on. Makes for a great field power source if you have 12vdc appliances. This if you’re car is not conveniently close of course.

If you really need the extra resolution the 6d can give you 10/9 the pixels of that. And the newest 5d can get 11/10 the pixels of the 6D.
So, as you can see, those cowboys are pushing the envelope as far as they can. I mean, when the 1Ds came out in 2004 we all thought “woah, 16.7mp! Just think, in 2014 we could get something crazy, like 16.75 or 17.01mp” But it’s just 2013 and they’ve already cranked it up to 18.1mp. Heady times.

Very happy with the 2Ti’s 18Mpxls. But the reason I want and dammit as soon as they allow overtime again I’ll be busting my phuqin arse to get must have the 6D is the low-hi ISO noise. Clean pixels at 6400?? Sirius-ly? I’ll be able to take 15 second shots instead of 2 minute exposures of galaxies? (or push the envelope; 8 second images at 12800 and a few more frames should clean it up nicely). Astrophotography will get a whole lot easier for me. A whole lot. 2 hours of 2Ti time cut down to 30 minutes. Productivity will octuple.

Orionid chase the features, indeed. Ya’ll know what I’ll be chasing. (Esp. just having my astrofark arse handed to me 🙄 )

So why not the 5dIII? Canon refurb site has them at $2800 and probably ca. $2000 with the loyalty program.

Not that I want you having an edge in AP or anything. 😉
