ParticipantNothing sucks more than your lens falling off, so this is important.
Except when it’s your camera. Making my first serious astrophotos the other night and I didn’t tighten the adapter enough. Bounced off the eye cup and tripod foot plate, so it’s all good still. Now I have two little lanyards that I swap out with my normal strap that hook to the back of the scope.

ParticipantMy wife does the same thing (rocks), my sister-in-law collects little jars of sand, etc.
Appreciated a good jar of sand,..

ParticipantPut me down for the “most can” focal length. I’ll make it work as an optic, the novelty is the can.

ParticipantWhen do we see the most (numerically) creative people come out of the woodwork and produce? When people are confident and the future looks bright – Italian Renaissance, Jazz Age, Housing Bubble of the 2000s. Creative people don’t shut down when times are tough, but it seems like people are forced to spend a bunch of that creative reserve making ends meet, or their souls get worn out observing misery.
I’m on board with this idea and have been for a long time. The way I have vocalized it in the past is “The Great Depression was not just economic depression, people lost the will to do anything.” Those with any will were over worked and under paid.
(Just think of me as Marlin Perkins* hovering in a helicopter over a swarm of sweaty, portly men traveling in search of Star Wars action figures and microbrewed beers. My assistant Jim is being thrashed to death by a pack of angry Politics Thread lions, hope he paid his Mutual of Omaha premiums!)
That right there is some funny shiat, old timer.

ParticipantAll valid points so far, especially the Fark.com aspect. I only have anecdotal evidence but I think fark is quite possibly dying with a whimper not a bang. We had historically high voting in farktography just because statistically, the large fark population produced a large farktographer population. I myself am burdened in exactly the same manner as orionid right now, 72 hour weeks of night shift. It’s killing me to not have a camera in my hand. But enough about me, I’ll be back.
The way I see it, we have the dwindling farktography and at the opposite end of the spectrum the chaotic and unfocused world of social media. I don’t know facebook, twitter and so on, but I joined G+ a few months ago. I imagine the rest are similar. The questions forming in my mind are these: Where do we want to fall in the spectrum? How do we inject the energy into our orbit to push us there?
I don’t think a change in theme policy will get us far. It might gain us a few more regulars but in the end, we’re still in near fark orbit. There are scattered references to farktography around (pinterest, g+,..) but they all seem to whither. G+ has the infrastructure and audience, but it certainly would not be the learning tool that farktography has been for me if I started there. It seems like more of a “look what I can do” environment. Voting and feedback seem unfocused, therefore less useful (again, I am a noob there so maybe it’s just me).
I know a handful of amateur photographers of various skill levels. I have tried to convince them of the benefits of this community but they must see it differently, or not understand my point, or are too busy or just don’t care.
So, I have nothing but questions at this point. Are we SpaceLab? Past our prime, mission complete and doomed to burn up in the atmosphere? I hope not.
Do we start a marketing campaign? Vote whoring the internets to come play with us? Is that even possible?
The more someone has to do to participate, the less likely they are going to. For fark, you must register (yes it’s simple but I know it has dissuaded some people). Same for G+ and so on. Is there a way to make participation easier?
The newness of fark has worn off, as it will with G+ and anything else. Honeymoon over. How do we make it in the long term?
(not very organized thinking, just woke up, still drinking mah coffee).

ParticipantI think this is a noble and generous gesture, but much like CISS I don’t want to just take and return nothing. So come up with something I can fab in the machine shop for ~equal time (mill, lathe, TIG, MIG and so on) and we have a deal. The equipment is old, but I can do +/- 0.001″ if I’m careful, +/-0.010″ is easy.

As for the can, surprise me. The older and more bizarre the better (not limited to beer/soda) . Bday=9/16fluffybunny
ParticipantCorona is cheap and easy here and not “Diet-half-caf-zero” beer (why drink if you’re going to kill all the reasons?)
Founders Breakfast with a big juicy steak is doubleplus good.fluffybunny
ParticipantWell, so there I was, taking pics at the $50 flat rate open bar on Bourbon St. in the French Quarter last night, when who should I run into but Drew Curtis and the legendary Mike Andrews. Shocking! I know! What are the odds of seeing both of them at once?!? Since I had their mostly undivided attention, I asked if they might have some server space for all (or most of) the pics I’d been taking, and they’re response was that since bandwidth is now so inexpensive, they might start hosting images on Fark itself.

ParticipantI’ve been tearing my hair out the past week dealing with one of life’s certainties (and I ain’t dead yet, so I think you know which one that leaves).
Oh, crap. *looks at calendar* oh, phew.
You know when it’s coming? Are you a wizard?
All kidding aside, work is taking the wind right out of my photography time. Stupid real life.
