i think that’s a stretch….i mean, someone could replicate a lensbaby look using the blur tool, we just take it on faith that no one is going to. if these contests are so important to someone that they’re going to cheat by putting a red filter on in post rather than in front of the actual lens they’ve got bigger problems than the rules of a photo contest.

    /my $.02

but what if you stick a red hoya filter on the front of your lens? it’s not a digital effect and it’s something that film guys used to do as well.

when you click on the ‘view different sizes’ there are two boxes of code – the first one includes everything you need to make your photo a link, the second one is just the URL. if you just copy and paste the text from the first one into the ‘comments’ box on fark it should do everything you need to do to post your pic and link back to flickr.

Soooo much I want to say about this particular wording. heh heh

Srsly, though, that whole post had me laughing. Body hair related injuries. Naked wearing only a camera. lulz!

    oh god, me too.

heh, I bow to your fortitude. I have sworn to not set foot in AZ again after an ill-advised trip over the 4th of July to Phoenix.

Curious – ah, I see. I have also worked for a hack, hated it, and wondered how he made ANY money. I figured out it came down to self-promotion – he pimped himself at every opportunity (he was a wildlife/fishing photog though, not wedding).

Call me naive, but I would rather continue to work as an acc’t to pay the bills and not compromise my style and artistic ethics than sell out & do glowy bride portraits or selective color a bouquet. so i guess put me in category #2.

advertising/product shots are a completely different story – the art director sets it up, you (maybe) offer some lighting input, you shoot what they want and away you go. they have hired you to shoot their setup how they want it and everyone knows that from the get-go. weddings – yes, it is their day, but they’ve hired you to document it how you see it and interpret it.

caradoc – i went with some Gaiam Gaucho pants – stretchy, resilient, NOT the tshirt material ones but made from a bit stiffer cotton with some lycra in it so they keep their shape. Put ’em with a white button shirt and some Dansko Marcelles and I’m set to go.

I love dickies, but I think I would melt in a pair of black dickies in the sun all day. I agree with you though, they’re wonderful. Maybe for winter jobs. 😛

heh – caradoc – the setup for the rings shot was about a foot and a half off of the ground – i was laying in the middle of the trail. when i shopped pants it was all about ease of movement and simplicity of cleansing. more difficult than expected when you’re trying to buy something that doesn’t look like it belongs on a construction site.

i’m not sure what you’re talking about curious? combine existing shots or do a setup where I can see the people through the rings? I definitely need a closer-focusing lens to get any engraving detail; i just don’t have the glass for that right now.

everything was shot digital and processed in CS2 – glad some of it looks like film. I shy away from doing anything with the ‘soft glow’ or selective color because i find it horribly cheesy and i don’t want to do it and have my name attached to something like that. If someone asked me specifically for an effect on a particular shot I’d probably do it, but for the most part my thinking is that if someone likes my stuff enough to hire me (or let me play at their wedding) it is because they like my style/attitude/personality, so I had damn well better be consistent in how I shoot/see things.

Up with avatars, down with signatures!

That’s good, my signature is right down there

    lolz

i are serious poster, posting in ur forum

or is cliche mixing just wrong?

i don’t mind avatars as long as they’re not animated (aka ‘seizure inducing’ – excellent phrase GW). but OTO we’ve made it this long without them, so if it’s a pain to set them up i wouldn’t cry about it or anything.

    heee, thanks everyone.

re: stormclouds – i was PSYCHED that there was weather. i think it makes for so much more interesting photographs. and i’m a pretty shallow person, so i didn’t really think about the symbolism. 😛 how about – ‘as long as they’re together, there is no storm they can’t weather (sha na na na na na na sha na)’? they’re still on their honeymoon (lucky ducks – costa rica for a month!!!) so I haven’t heard back what they think about it yet.

re: flowers – yeah, looking at it again the DOF kinda sucks on it. i just freaking love those poppies!! how about this one –

re: the faux vintage/xpro shot – yes, it is too dark on him; either i need to re-calibrate or everyone else in the entire world does!! 😛 i stand by the composition, tho; i like him edging out of the frame a bit.

thanks all for the advice/crits – i really appreciate it. i think that’s one of the main things i miss about school is living with other photo geeks to bounce stuff off of. that, and having thousands of dollars of equipment at my fingertips.

oh, and everything posted on this board was from a friend’s wedding – i was not the official photog. the other set on flickr was a paying gig – a mid-40’s couple, each on their 2nd marriage, just the two of them and the judge. i did the shallow DOF with the flower thing again for that one but i was having a hard time coming up with new angles/ideas when it was just three people standing in one spot for a half hour.

    you guys rock, thanks.
