ParticipantWelcome! Pay no attention to the one’s behind the bushes; they’re photographing bugs. They’ll move when they find one under better lighting.

ParticipantActually, you know what? As it’s written: “Note: Stacking and other astrophotography techniques are allowed for astrophotos.” Y’all are smart. Y’all know what you’re doing. That’s an astrophoto technique, so it’s kosher. We just won’t use that ‘S’ word. If anyone else comes in with the same question, I’ll just refer them back to “astrophotography techniques.”
O-righty-then; that seems reasonable enough.

ParticipantDifficulty: No terrestrial elements? That would keep things totally in the sky, rather than getting stuff like pretty mountains with star trails (but that might also keep a lot of people from participating). Or maybe ‘stitching permitted for celestial bound shots only’. In my case, I have a hard time with bigger objects (Andromeda, Orion’s Neb) without using at least 2 POVs to get the diameters. (This may no longer be true, I’m working on piggybacking a 1000mm to my 2800mm, and I’ll see how it goes…)

ParticipantThere’s something I’d like to be addressed in this theme, and that’s stitching. The most recognized example is this one: http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/pr1995044a/.
Not saying I’m going to go there (I’m just thinking ahead to the possibility), with many astro-images, a stitched FOV can be necessary. Can this be added to the theme description? There are other examples I can think if you’d like citations…

ParticipantI’m out. Comet Pan-STARRS has my complete attention at the moment. But I hope everyone has fun with this this week! I had one cool idea, but have found no time to execute it!

ParticipantYesterday’s image got picked up by EarthSky.org and is promoting tonight’s viewing. Super nice to be recognized by scientific folks who appreciate this sort of thing!!
ravnostic
ParticipantThanks much guys! Yes, Staplermofo I think I can!! CISS; it’s gotten better!!! The G+ website for the friggin observatory that is Pan-STARRS saw my photos and reposted two of them!!
When the observatory that discovered the comet that you managed to capture in camera reposts them; that, my friends, is real love
The hard part now will be choosing which image to use for Farkstronomy II!!
I’ll only use one of them; I may not have even taken it yet (I’ll be out Sunday with the telescope). I’m beaming with astro-admirational glee!!!

ParticipantNot in my book (I gotta get me some of those!)
//which part is the ‘bad for ya? Beer, cigars, penis-shaped shot glass or the Simpson’s reference?
//he’s holding it wrong. ‘sayin. 😛
ravnostic
ParticipantUh…really? Cause everything you listed completely jives with my understanding of how the theme was clarified and your images fit that expanded clarification. I think any debate at this point has to do with potential future iterations of this theme, not what’s in or out for this one.
I’ve had my fill of drama doses lately, and I’m just about to snap over any little thing. To be honest, I just don’t care right now, so ‘whatever’.
//see ya all in a couple weeks; don’t think I have anything for next week and I have too many commitments to go looking for fodder this weekend.

ParticipantNot to add to the drama but… [cue the drama]
Elsinore, please delete my three images from this contest.
FTR: The egg shot is a single image, warmed to 10K (could be done equally with a filter), sharpened, and dust data despeckled. Technically, since I could have SET the color temp, it’s totally within bounds of any fark contest.
The lightning shot is two images layered, and could be done in a darkroom with masking techniques Ansel Adams and others used nearly (if not in fact) 100 years ago.
The R2 shot is three images, and uses the same techniques as the lightning, excepting that R2 would need to be masked in using a raptor reduction lens.
I thought this was the consensus, but its apparent in the post-thread discussion that this is being debated like the shenanigans in Washington D.C. over tax hikes and budget cuts.
And I loathe political discussions.
And I’m not too big on drama, either (even when I’ve employ it; makes me feel dirty to do so). I want a divorce.
//pics up photography sandbox tools, leaves the playground.

ParticipantComet Pan-STARRS will be popular, no doubt, and Lemmon for those in the southern hemisphere. There’s some thin crescent moons between now and then, and plenty of time to hunt out Iridium flares. Lots of opportunities for those without telescopes to bring on a good show.
ravnostic
ParticipantDo they really post that early? I thought about a week was the longest. Personally, I’m for anything that increases participation. The fact that you are limited to three images will (eventually) give pause to people posting in haste very early, I would think, if they become more regular participants.
ravnostic
ParticipantYay! Far enough into the future that I’ll have a chance to get some new images! Winter this year has been a be-ach.
ravnostic
ParticipantI’m also having trouble narrowing down my last few ideas. Anyone care to give some input?
Two of these three:

Floor of the Fountain – http://www.flickr.com/photos/orionid/8177930748/sizes/c/
Archway to Paradise – http://www.flickr.com/photos/orionid/6958507204/sizes/l/One of these two:

Perspective – http://www.flickr.com/photos/orionid/8534914662/sizes/l/Thanks in advance!
I’d go with the 2nd two of the first three, and the first of the second two. But that’s just me.
I actually have three!! I’ve been working at learning all them durned layers and masks and stuff; hopefully it will be worth it. I like two of them, the third…kinda quick and dirty; ran out of time.

ParticipantYes need to put more themes in…
Elsewise, where would the LGT? 😯
