Heh. She’s a cutie, and very photogenic. But do you suppose this summer she’ll let you go for long enough to get some monsoon lightning pictures?

    And the video:
    http://astronomy.activeboard.com/t49208650/spectral-instruments/

Let’s put off filming for a week and see if we can get a greenlight asking farkers to pester this Zeke character to let us (me) use (have a chance to steal) his camera. Then zoom, we run off to Nicaragua, depose the Sandinistas and back whoever opposes an extradition treaty with the US… which might be the Sandinistas… Oh man this is gonna be cake.

weird shiat like this makes me wish this forum had ‘likes’ or ‘+1s’ or ‘Kudos’.

Thanks, Barracuda; it’s my ‘best’ so far, in terms of quality; I’m coming up to speed on the flat frames, etc. Wish I had more stackable images, but the will-o-the-wind is what it is.

You’d probably wind up with a circle exposure. Which isn’t necc. a bad thing; you’d know you’re getting all the view you possibly could. And you do gain some 1.6 brighter exposure (or thereabouts? My scope went from f/10 to f/6.3) I’m currently contemplating the conversion kit to take me to an f/2 with a FOV about 5-6 moon-widths for just that purpose. I’d lose minor details–but seeing is limited anyway, and I’d love the shorter exposure times and wider FOV. I’tll be about another $800 to do so, but it’s on my bucket list for september when I get more stock to sell (maybe sooner, if I do well at the casino).

Okay, it would suck among the voters; but just to qualify, if it’s called the “Wild Duck Cluster”, and I don’t see the duck, is it okay?

Looks more like a rabbit to me.

I see two 17th century Englishmen sipping tea.

I was mostly just glad not to see two hands in the image. lol.

I thought it was a great shot of a globular cluster but not very animal like. Probably would skip voting for that reason.

Was thinking more along the lines of the Horsehead Nebula or the constellation Scorpio, actually, just wondering if the concept is acceptable as ‘representation as animals’. Posted the WDC because I know I won’t be using it.

I would love to do a star party sometime. I keep posting “I’m going astro-shooting” on G+ but nobody ever takes me up on it. I usually go Sunday nights since there’s fewer late night drunk bozos driving around getting lost to spoil my shots, so that might have something to do with it. Most people work Mondays.

Worth getting to know, orionid. I assure you, every little breeze does make a difference in a scope of your size. The counter weights should help a great deal–more mass stabilization, though. I envy your FOV and F/ratio, though. Looking forward to seeing some images!

Thanks, Chupa I had much higher hopes for this, but the wind killed them. Maybe in the Autumn, after the monsoons but…no. Light pollution will kill everything. I needed better skies.

Details, details! These are 60 second exposures, with two 120 second exposures that were very clear thrown in for added detail. The ISO was 1600, so I used a Master Flat field image generated for another shot (12 exposures, IIRC), and a Master Dark of 6. There were 28 ‘light’ frames of the subject, of which Deep Sky Stacker dropped nearly 1/2, biased toward the long exposures. I probably took 80 shots, but there was a light wind, which ruined way to many frames for use. I First 1/2-res’d everything and converted to TIFF, did the majority of processing with the DSS controls, and finished in PS Elements. Thanks, lokisbong and orionid
