ParticipantThese are awesome shots. Guess I’ll skip the next “Sports” theme–and agree with ennui; use a medium f/stop for the lens, 2-3x it’s widest, low ISO; a chance to pre-compose would be great if you can get it.

ParticipantI’m just *beaming* about this theme, though I have knot a thing to use as yet. I’ll have to gnaw on it a while, maybe think how I can go out on a limb with it (there’s no MacClaine difficulty, is there?); it’s a good opportunity to branch out and think outside the box. I’m pining for this one; I might even have some sappy photography, for the romantic voters, I should stop now, leaves whilst I canz…

Participant“tentacles.”
I gotta get new glasses.
What did you think it said?
My guess: Cojones
Gosh, I thought he’d misread it as mantickles, or some such…

ParticipantA perfectly easter picture! love the shoes…do those come in a mens, size 11?
ravnostic
Participantloki; Yes, but did you actually drink the beer?

ParticipantHa! You know what’s funnier, is I completely missed that you’d made the mistake; I generally follow the bib’stats so I just see who’s picture is what regardless of obo’s, and associate when I view them every once and a while on fark for updates.
I knew the first minute I saw it that Orionid’s picture would win. I just thought it’d be the b/w railroad shot! I’d hang that one on my wall. (the flower was nice, too, and I did vote for it…nice trifecta.

ParticipantNice shot. For my night photography (when I’m not using the telescope), I use a ‘medium’ f/stop setting (so, if your lens is at 200mm and f/5.6 is the ‘lowest’ ISO, I set mine to 11-13, about double) and infinity focus (the moon will autofocus nicely). You can play with the exposure length to get the ‘feel’ right, or there should be an exposure metering system in the camera to find the ‘right’ point for the shutter speed. I’m sure others here will have good suggestions, as well. Welcome!

ParticipantWorked fine for me. Clear your cache?

ParticipantSolar prominences, I’m told, are difficult–the sun has to be blown way out to get them; modifying that and a good clear sun frame in post seems the way to go (at least with my filter), which isn’t allowed of course. Thus far it’s been moot; even when 1450, I think it was, just came round the rim, it had already lost it’s energy.)
But we’ll try, try again.

ParticipantOh, hai! I just noticed this had been scheduled. Glad I bought that solar filter for the telescope! (though in truth, unless we get some kick-arse sunspots started stat, the images are rather dull).

ParticipantI did consider that, and I have shots to accomplish it, orionid, but I can’t stack them. DSS requires finding at least 5 ‘stars’, and if Venus is exposed properly–over 5 stops away from the brightest Pleiade–, then it only finds one. I could overlay it, but it actually loses drama–the blown out Venus is much more effective than the 1/2 ‘moon’ Venus crescent shopped in. One of my favorite things is the light rays emanating from it; I don’t usually get that with my 75-300mm pieces of Tamron glass (I was hai-elped by having ‘live view’ to use for the sharp focus–a nice benefit over the xTi).
Thanks, chupa; indeed!!

Participant…man…I guess I should start the archive dive right about now. Though against the mofo, I won’t have anything abstractly bizarre enough. ;o0

ParticipantWe had a power outage around that time in Phoenix. I’m sure it’s related. The skies were clear but….
anywho, here’s one version of the shots I took of Venus in the Pleiades (I’m quickly coming up with various tweeks in contrasts and tones, etc. I think it came out okay, for a central Phoenix light polluted area. some 30 darks, some 80-90 lights (best 75% of 123). This one is SOOC DSS, I didn’t fiddle with Elements yet.
