Stop me if I’m wrong but the shots U-Man posted are all ones he’s used for other themes?

    Oh? Phew!

goes to trash bin folder, retrieves forsaken shots back to SIF folder..

Ha! Thanks. I was really just showing some examples of the spirit of the theme. I will be combing the archive over the next few days.

Planning the same, though I’ve taken some bees with this theme in mind…

The way I interpret the theme, that shot (while gorgeous) wouldn’t qualify as the sun isn’t visible. The theme description says it can be partially obscured, but must be visible.

However, I’ve been known to overinterpret, so hopefully U-Man can give a more definitive clarification on what he’d like to see allowed/disallowed.

What she (and kestrana) said. At least part of the sun – not just rays – needs to be visible. IMO if you can get a star-burst, there’s bright sun coming through.

And for the initial “is it safe” question – I shoot into the sun all of the time. I don’t use a long lens and long shutter speeds while pointing right into the sun. But this one is at 280 mm on a 7D (APS-C) at ISO 250 and 1/8000. It was sunrise on the way to work.

These are some awesome shots. The 2nd dog one, the landscape flowers, the sepiesque wheat–very nice!!

CISS; the panes are orange–this whole thing is part of the canal system, and that big structure up top is the cooling apparatus–not sure how it works exactly, but it’s basically an evaporative cooler, and the orange parts are the vent filters for the evaporation part. Funny you should mention the HDR, because as we were shooting (I was with 4 others), we all kept saying, “Doesn’t it look HDR?!”. There’s bunches of varied interpretations from the others over on G+.

Like pollution, my friend farktographer! It turns all the clouds orange [edit–I played w/color balance to reduce this]. The painting was done with 3 LED pen lights, the ones I purchased for my Apples & Oranges lighting. All the blue tones come from that. Pretty much everything else is just what little lighting was coming in from streetlights, etc. And I have to scratch the third one from ‘fark’ safe–it’s the version where I tweeked the sky in a mask (and I’m still not happy with it).

Meanwhile (and on another subject), some bee sides (aka my new neighbors):

    EEEKKK!!

    Ummm… wow.

    Just… wow…

    Seconded. More details please!

What details would you like? Without looking, I believe the ISO was 400, the exposures varied from 20 to 30 seconds, f/11.

I was planning on doing one of those shots where the sun is huge in the frame, with a silhouette of a person in front of it. My longest focal length is 200mm and I know is not enough. Any suggestion on what should I be shooting with, 400, 500mm? Maybe I can borrow a tele converter from a friend, I believe it’s a 1.7x, but I don’t know if it will cover my need.

How huge are you looking for? The deeper your focal length, the tighter your aperture needs to be to keep your depth of field so that the sun and your subject are both focused.

    Amen.

To me, it’s an angle formula question. The sun will be 1/2 degree, 30 arc seconds (give or take a couple) regardless. Your subject, then, needs to be far enough away to fit in that frame of view (regardless of how many pixels you fill in your frame). So we can use sines and cosines and such to determine that a six foot tall subject, to fit within the ‘frame’ of the sun, needs to be about 700 feet away, at least (nevermind getting the subject and sun to line up). On a horseback? (12 feet tall) 1400 feet away.

If you try it, use a f/stop setting 2-3 times your minimum, and shoot aperture priority; you should get a fine silouette if you focus infinitively.

It’s ironic that with a fine telescope, objects even 1/2 mile away come out blurred against a setting sun; sometimes, bigger isn’t always better. I’ll probably use one, but it’s either the sun is focused, or the landscape is; but not both.

I look forward to seeing your efforts!

I think it probably depends on the situation, hunches. Everyone takes pictures of sunrises and sunsets, and I’m sure to no (or extremely little) ill effect, at wider focal lengths. On the other hand, zooming into 300mm and shooting the sun makes that ball of plasma a lot bigger and then focuses all that light onto the sensor–I’ve done it with my DLSR to no ill effect at setting like f/32 1/4000sec @ ISO 100–but I wouldn’t make a habit of it often!

But this technical question might be better answered by our more technical mods, who have zen master skills and knowledge compared to me.

I had nothing for this one, but enjoyed a lot of you alls’ images. Seriously, how’s a guy in Arizona gonna compete with nuclear subs and old frigates?

You’ll be leading me to your G+ profile…when? Aspire further, btw. I’m nothing too terribly special (except to my mom.)

I’m just *beaming* about this theme, though I have knot a thing to use as yet. I’ll have to gnaw on it a while, maybe think how I can go out on a limb with it (there’s no MacClaine difficulty, is there?); it’s a good opportunity to branch out and think outside the box. I’m pining for this one; I might even have some sappy photography, for the romantic voters, I should stop now, leaves whilst I canz…

    …*sigh*

Updated difficulty: Rav isn’t allowed to participate in this one.

I haz bean saddened. Logging off…

This bastard pairing actually produced some good art–but it’s all damned work. Someone, somewhere, is hurling a hex upon you…

//not me, of course; I don’t care one way or another. But just watch carefully when you cross the street.

Dayum, man. I don’t think I’ll bother to play in the contests in which you employ any good number of these photos. Awesomesauce. If you were to post these on G+ individually, I’d run through the merits of each (you have more skill in your trigger finger than I think I’ll ever have in my whole body. Or, at least, I’m a big fan of your imaging style. Dad looks great–that’s a memory that can last several hundred years.)
