ParticipantPope! Pandora’s working! Yay!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the freebie link!
(they did ask if I wanted the ask! toolbar, but let me deselect it before I installed.) 11.2 gigs of photo goodness, now being restored to my backup drive where I thought I’d put them to begin with.
Thanks to all for the helpful advise–but for my situation (deleted the folders, hadn’t written anything since), Pandora is da bomb!
15 minutes to go, but it’s recovering both raw and jpg versions perfectly.
//saved my arse you did (and my wallet fundage)–thank you thank you thank you Pope!!!

ParticipantTYVM!!! I’ll have to wait for the ‘free’ paycheck (every three months I get 3 instead of two); I just won’t touch the D partition until then. And dayum!! Either 100M (what, 10 pictures, RAW?) or 500 Gig!!!. Nothing in between for say $79? Dayum….
I’ll pay. I’ll grumble, but there’s some great shots in there…so I’ll pay.

ParticipantThis…

…is fantastic. I really like that shot.

ParticipantRav – that first photo is amazing!
TYVM. I like the series as a whole (I have some 25 good ones from different times and dates).
YugoI think it depends on whether he wants prints, or just the files. But as to how much for your time, I’d suggest $75 per hour, $25 minimum, and then add in printing if he’s looking for you to take care of that aspect (and factor in your time, there, too.) YMMV–but skillz should be paid for.

ParticipantWind’s up would be my choice as well. simple image, no distractions–I love it. That surfer shot is excellent.

ParticipantI’ve been having this discussion about privacy with a friend who’s a professional photographer (from MySpace, refound on G+, never saw on FB). For her, it’s an issue. For me, it’s not. I long ago decided that anything I ‘publish’ anywhere on line is going to be taken if people like it, for personal use or otherwise, and I’ll likely never know. Most of my stuff gets posted at lower resolutions than the originals anyway. I choose not to worry about it as I’m not pursuing any kind of living off my photos.
That said, I respect anyone who does take issue with the terms, and if I found someone was actually profiting off my work, I’d certainly take issue with that. I think it’s sad, though, that we miss out on good photos because of stuff like this. I’m fairly certain if Google wants to pursue businesses, the TOS will get a rework.
I’m with olavf on the circles. Better and more intuitive than any I’ve seen, since the early blogspot days.

Participantcaradoc, I think at some point you provided a link for a home made lightning trigger? Or some of us were going to commission you to make some for us (though now with the baby that may no longer be possible.) I’m still interested in either.
Re Yugoboy‘s night shots; I like. I’ve had a most glorious 4 days off, and got several night scenes myself, but nothing astro (I suppose I could have gotten a few last night had I been willing to drive to dark skies.) I did, however, get a nice set from which I’d like to share a couple. I think I’ve posted several shots at various times incorporating the cell tower located in my complex. Over the past few weeks, ‘linemen’ have been there at all hours of the day and night, doing I don’t know what. Last night at (checks exif data) at 12:30am and again at 3:00am, they were up there again.
My difficulty is my fastest zoom lens is only f/4.5, so I needed long exposures, making the linemen hard to show up clearly. The first is 1.6 seconds, the next 1 second, both ISO 800. Cropped images, but elsewise as-is from the camera settings I normally use.

Participant-if you’re viewing your own profile you can’t make an update on that page, you have to go back to the stream (you can make a post from your own wall on FB)
I have a share button in the very top right of the page that appears to allow this from pretty much anywhere in the googleverse, including my own profile.
Oh, hai! Thanks for the tip, sleeping!! So it is…

ParticipantGot everyone’s adds; made a farktographer circle of my own. Thanks all!
Kestrana, I know +1ing comments was in that survey thing I did. And the photo thing? A friend from back in the MS days, Amy (whom I’ve actually met in person a couple times), posted this:
It will spell trouble for those unaware, for sure.
As for the voting for features thingie, it’s here:
I have to say, having used MySpace and FB both, Google+ is on it’s way to marrying the best of both sites. And they are listening to what people are saying–which is super nice (MS never did that, I don’t think FB did, either.)
But it’s going to suck when they start doing ads, and it’s sure to happen.

ParticipantIt’s pretty early beta, so a fair amount of time & discussion is around the way the site works and sending feedback and the like (for me anyway, ’cause it’s fun)
I loved that we could actually voice our opinions on what we’d like to see. Did’ja see that page? I’ll look it up for you if not, if you’re interested. It gave examples of peoples thoughts (“I’d like to be able to do such and so”…”I think it would be better if…” etc.), then you could agree, disagree, or skip answering all together.

ParticipantI’m at http://gplus.to/ravnostic
I got on a few days ago after they opened it back up. One of my MySpace friends was in on the day it opened and got me invited once it reopened, but I’m leagues away from navigating with ease. I already like it better than FB, though. I’ve always hated FB.
BTW, that ‘Tom’ guy from MS is on there, and he’s posting great links and ‘blogs’ on how to use the site, as well as seriously funny pictures and stuff. Not like his MS persona at all–was very surprised (and pleased) to see he’s a normal guy (except he’s independantly filthy rich and retired these days), with a great sense of humor. I highly recommend following him (and to think, having him on your friend list in MS branded you as a ‘loser’.)

ParticipantGood to know, sleeping. Just shot the first roll and took it to CVS for processing (I’m not paying camera shop prices for a completely experimental roll.) Different settings, lighting, etc. Wrote everything down so I’ll have some sort of reference. Should have them back in about an hour.
While I’ll probably never do film photography in earnest, it is something I’d like to get to know a bit better; if nothing else, it’s my only full frame ‘sensor’ camera. 🙂

ParticipantUpdate: The lens-cleaning portion went remarkably well (considering it was my first time doing so.) It’s obvious from the amount of yellowing on the now-white focus and shutter rings that this came from the home of a serious smoker, when smoking was cool and glamorous.
On the old Argus Rangefinder (the one with 10 shutter speeds and f/3.5-18; I think 1939-41 IIRC?), the front lens piece just rotates off from it’s mount. There’s an center one as well, which unscrews with some special wide-arse screwdriver which I don’t have, but I made do (carefully) with a letter opener. The main housing which holds them also unscrews, exposing the backside of the third lens piece. It was clear (so to speak) that there was some serious gunk between the outer and center lens, but I took them all apart to clean both sides of all three.
I have isoprop at 91%, but that left residue, so I used a cleaner that came with my digital cleaning kit. Several Q-tips later (6 or 7), I deemed them ready for reassembly, however I kept finding as I assembled and viewed, I could see this smudge or that, this cotton hair or that. But I persisted, excepting one single spot flaw that appears to be within the center glass piece itself. The cotton I removed with tweezers–no mean feat; hard to see up close though easy to see once the lenses started going back together. There’s gunk on the inside of the focus view-piece, but I’m not going to worry about that; the outsides are plenty clean enough to see through.
Having refreshed on my instructions for operation, I’m loaded with film and ready to shoot. Finding a subject to shoot–another matter. And I did not do any work on the shutter function, but I let that go for now, as well (I think I’ll tackle that on the ‘newer’ circa 1945ish one, for the learn curve experience, before doing so on this one.)
As it happens I have two rolls of ASA 200 film, I’ll try for shots in shadowy areas; it’s a full sunny day and the shutter *theoretically* only goes to 1/300th second.
I can buy rolls of ASA 100 later. I’m also thinking a couple of 400 or 800, as I do still have my bulb-release do-hickey from my old minolta, and it would be interesting to take some night-time photos, maybe some astro-photos (some of my first pictures with my first camera were astroshots–crappy ones, but they were pretty okay for a kid of 16 with his first camera and no idea how to use it.
Thanks again for the advice!!

ParticipantPope–I agree. Since I didn’t find them on my ‘puter, and was sure I had some good ones, I dug out the photos from before I even had digital, found one I’d really liked, and scanned it with the scanner I got for the scanner photo contest. It’ll be my entry #3. 🙂 Never can tell about ‘them voters’, but I hope they like it (I know I do.)
The bonus is I scanned some other old stuff I liked, for future consideration. (The dust deletion required from scanning sucks b@lls, btw.)
//edit–and congrats on last week’s win. That was an awesome pic!

ParticipantOh. Scratch that question from the Software forum. But will it continue?
