ParticipantI recently upgraded to this (but for the Canon) and I’m VERY happy): http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-70-300mm-4-0-5-6-Digital-Cameras/dp/B003YH9DZE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367071225&sr=8-1&keywords=tamron+70-300mm+vr. It’s $449, but there’s a $100 rebate on it (reminds me I need to get that form sent in, STAT!) I don’t think you’re on a crop sensor, though? It’s 480mm equiv on my 2Ti.
The VR is very effective, handheld shots (not all at 300mm):

I recommend holding out for costlier glass you can rely upon. This lens replaced my previous Tamron 70/300; it’s sharper, but even the old one beat out the sharpness of the 75/300mm used Canon I’d bought (and eventually gave away in dissatisfaction.) And it’s got a 6 year warranty.
(dunno why the links to G+ appear small; lets give you a larger taste of that last one): http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2013/apr/17/panstarrpano2.jpg

ParticipantStabilization is awesome, bender; it’s night and day, fo shizzle. I don’t know that it could, orionid; I haven’t looked that closely at the specs.

Participantokay, then. This is very gracious of you, btw. I’d like a Budweiser 16 oz can on a Canon mount, please. Sept 28th. I’ll be 44.

Participantclouddancer You have gotten better with time; we’ve all seen it. You have a full life and priorities (family is always a priority) that dictate how much time you have to spend reading, learning, and executing in the photography world. I’m sure you have better pictures of your kids and your life than you may have had, had you never participated at all. And those scrapbook memories last a lot longer than this contest will (realistically speaking, assuming your kids grow up, and have kids of their own, etc.)
//digress One thing I miss, CISS from the old stat forum is the little graph showing growth in votes over time. Though given today’s numbers the NVC average would better display that.

ParticipantRuling 2? And I hate to ask, as I’m giving away one of my better shots (but it won’t be as clean; this has photoshop elements that won’t do even with astrofark guidelines). I ask as it was mentioned about foreground focal points vs. background astrophots.) Is the image more about the foreground and less about the background to rule it out?

as opposed to this one, where obviously the background is just…a background

ParticipantUrdu-ing it wrong?
//haha. Wish I had something relevant to add. I’ve tried promoting farktography at FB and G+, hasn’t seemed to help. Has anyone noticed if Drew has switched to domestic beers? That would be a sign that something’s wrong…

ParticipantI don’t think we’ve been considering our audience enough.
I don’t think we’ve been considering how to increase our audience enough.
Fark was a beacon of light 10 years ago, it’s common fodder now. Plus, there’s all these FB and G+ distractions; everyone’s connected to everybody, all in real time, there’s only so much you can do with a 24 hour day, etc.
The real issue is fark traffic; the next is increasing the portion of fark traffic that knows of and looks for farktography.

ParticipantI’m not going to call anyone out, but some of the “top” G+ photographers are merely meh in my opinion, but have thousands of followers because they are young, attractive, and female.
I resent being referred to as ‘female’. NTTAWWT.

Original? Or Jim Jones?

ParticipantRuling? It’s common in the marketplace, at least (and G+, etc.) to marry a foreground onto a stitched or stacked background (you can stack, but the horizon moves, after all). Example, not saying I’d use it or anything. 20+ frames, dark subtraction, but used the first frame in which to backlay the stack (it was rising).

ParticipantWTF? NBD is right! That’s new…

ParticipantThanks Yugo! You didn’t have to post them all first, though! ;o)
As it happened, clouds rolled in, I napped, and by then the clouds rolled out and I’d be *perfectly* situated for a night of astrotogging. But I didn’t prepare, because clouds had rolled in.
Damn. Tomorrow. I’ll go tomorrow. Tonight I’ll just take the 300mm out and see if I can get a 10 hour old moon.
