ParticipantI’ll just spout nonsense then until someone else speaks up.
Since it’s all personal opinion and all that crap, and you have a ready supply of it in yourself and your friends, take some pictures you like and think about what it is you like about them. Keep doing this until you have established trends.
Then, take a look at pictures you don’t like, but you think also follow those trends. Try to find a trend in what sucks. For example, I like pictures with a lot of contrast, but only when the contrast brings the subject, or a facet of the subject that supports scrutiny.
I like lots of vibrant color, but only when it’s nicely clumped. I don’t like rainbow vomit.
I like narrow depth of field, but only when I can clearly make out everything I’m interested in in the photo. If there’s something in the background I would like to read and can’t, I get frustrated at the photo. In other words, there isn’t any easy way. You have to think about what looks good, look it over, think about what would help, what wouldn’t, blah blah blah. Which is why all my photos are half-assed. My “good enough” threshold is awfully low.
Hopefully someone that photographs well will speak up and give proper advice.

ParticipantThat’s a rough question.
I mean, it’s essentially asking “what makes a photo good”.I’m not really sure how to answer that except to say “staplers.”
I’m also told up to 10% of the population prefers boobies to staplers, not that there’s anything wrong with that.staplermofo
ParticipantWow, that was interesting.
I had no idea you were the kind of person who used “autodidactic” so casually. How many of your CaptureIndy shots were originally taken for Farktography contests, and vice versa? Which is winning the battle for your heart?
staplermofo
Participantlol yeah that, too. The boobies shot a few weeks back was more than enough of that for me for a long time 😉
/my personal party trick
From what I’ve seen of Fark parties, just having boobies is an amazing trick that will leave half the bar spellbound the entire night.

Participantthanks schnee and NoBigDeal. i have re shot one and will upload and enter it. along with a “real” one. both of which will tank but that’s OK since i now do this more for my enjoyment than anything else.
I, on the other hand, will be making a profound artistic statement and deep social commentary that will woo not only this generation, but generations to come, cementing my place in internet art history and giving rise to not just a new artistic style, but also a new means of participating in being an artist, as art historians will later describe it. Tonight will be the sort of polarizing epoch that only comes about once every 1,000 years or so. Tonight, I join the ranks of the cavemen who discovered pigment can be smeared on stuff and whoever invented beauty.

ParticipantIf an image is NSFW, we can still enter it if we link to it, right?

Participantafter feeling pretty dern uninspired by this contest (which has more to do with external life than the topic) i finally got the bug and got a couple of pix today. if something throws itself at me tomorrow, then fine. if not, two pix it is.
I can virtually guarantee you have a stapler with shiny metal parts.

ParticipantMy plans fell apart when I realized that I’m not going to find a dead snake (or other reptile) whose neck would support a stapler, and there’s no way for me to hold a snake, a stapler, a lighter, a spray bottle of alcohol and take a picture all at once. And really, even if I could, it wouldn’t turn out.

ParticipantI appreciate it, but the camera I have will be okay I think.
I dropped off my first roll today, and I leave bright and early (i.e., straight from work) Saturday morning. which means this whole thread has been very last minute. Thanks though.

ParticipantDon’t get a Kodak z1285, it didn’t pass the kite test.

ParticipantAnd now that I’ve read the warnings on the film,
6. WTF is a “subdued light”?
7. WHY IS THIS NOT ON THE OUTER WRAPPER OF THE FILM!?staplermofo
ParticipantThat crappy TLR showed up and I have a couple noob questions.
Here‘s the manual for the camera. (Link goes directly to PDF)1. I’m supposed to use the top as a viewfinder. The image is on a lil screen. I wear glasses, should I keep them on or take them off before trying to focus.
2. Can I do multiple exposures to get the shutter speed I want? Like, since it only has /100, /50, /25 and bulb, can I do something stupid like /25 twice or whatever if I’m using a tripod and all that jazz?
3. My film doesn’t have a red side, it has shiny and matte. Is the shiny side of the film supposed to go towards the lens or the back of the camera?
4. I’m supposed to see a “1” on the film through a lil red dot on the back. Really? Is that going to be there? (I haven’t put film in yet)
5. A couple people mentioned that the lil red dot tends to leak light like a mofo (considering I’m supposed to see a “1” through it, this makes sense), and that I should tape a flap over it. Does that lil slidy downy thing mentioned in the manual handle that well enough, or do I still need to do that?staplermofo
ParticipantWell I’ll be damned. I liked the tie…an artistic shot tied with a Fark joke seemed to sum up Farkography in general.
“Artistry and jokes can compete for the top, but in the end, boobies always win.” sums up farktography in my book.

ParticipantWelcome aboard.
Let the photoshoppers worry about what’s photoshoppable. That’s their problem.
