i think maybe a *little* bit of frontal lighting? nothing too harsh, nothing that would make that beautiful backlit shadow disappear, but just a little more light on the flower itself.

    wonderful shot.

I see that now! Makes sense, too. The flower was on cardstock on my windowsill with its back facing the sun. So if I had put some light in front to highlight the flower it would have looked a bit more even. On goes the lightbulb 💡

    Thanks monkeybort!

Wanted to thank everyone again for inputs.

In the end, I went with the Minolta. The proprietary and 3rd party aspect of shooting ratio and lack of lenses for the E500 was pretty much what sealed the deal for me. So now that I didn’t choose that line I am sure it will become very popular 😛

But thanks ya’ll. It should get here some time this week and I can’t wait to take it out for a first spin.

That’s a great ‘first ever’ shot. Love the expression on the puppy’s face. That looks lke the ‘are you coming out’ or ‘can I come in?’ face.

I think it’s well framed and interesting subject matter 🙂

Farktography has inspired me to go out and buy my first ever digital camera, which I just did today. Yay! I’m really bummed that I didn’t get it in time for the Signs theme because that one looked fun.

Anyway, I see the theme for Jan 18th is snow & ice? While I’m sure there will be many great photos submitted, probably at least 1/3 the country can’t participate in this. I live in Las Vegas and to say snow and ice are scarce is an understatement, even in January. I’d imagine Southern Cal, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and lots of other states are in the same predicament.

I guess maybe I can try to do something artistic with the ice in my freezer.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the collective. Oops, my old Trek geekness is showing through.

Diamonds are a great idea GalleyWench.

Does anyone know if the pre-Lite voting remains, or if the voting slate is wiped clean when the thread moves over?

    Just curious…

The votes stay, but I gave up on voting early and now I wait until the next day. It’s a lot easier than going back over and over the thread.

Yay Monkeybort, you were in first the last time I checked. Have a safe trip home.

Veruca, those are some damn funny signs. I went to a pretty wild party on River Rd. way back in the day, so I can say without a doubt that the Don’t Drug and Drive sign is well placed. And 9.99 for self esteem? I’ll take two. 😉

I tried to comment on your Pbase idle_hands, but I don’t have a paid account… yet. Those stop signs are hilarious.

    bort! bort! bort! 😀

Thanks GalleyWench. My girlfriend came out a couple of summers ago and demanded that I pull around and take a picture of that sign. I was all whatever at the time but it makes me laugh now.

And your doorstop? I demand to know what the 4th little person is doing there! No…choking? Haha.

This week’s contest made me laugh like no other.

Well, I got my images up. Oi…I’ve really gotta man up and go total fark.

It’s so worth the $5/month if not for early photo submission then all the threads that never get the greenlight. There’s some twisted and funny stuff out there.

Every time I think I have my mind made up I come back and there’s another suggestion. Not a complaint by any means – I’m learning a lot just reading the reviews.

I’m seriously considering the Minolta now:

That kit comes with a 1 gig flash card at a pretty good price. I like the fact that it’s compatible with so many lenses. The Olympus is still pretty proprietary at this point.

Still shopping, still looking. Thanks to all for inputs. Oh and I have no old lenses or anything which would lead me in a particular direction.

Hiya synthemesc! I’m going to sign out and take a lil’ nap. I feel like I’m coming down with something… See you all in a bit.

Same here. Did you send a little something extra down from Alaska? 😛 Headache, congestion, and I can’t stop sneezing.

Ah, I didn’t know that was what you were asking. I don’t remember seeing it before but then again I have the memory retention of a gnat anymore.

Was curious which printing services are good for high quality photo printing. I have an Epson R200 for home use (pics on the ‘fridge and such) and have used Snapfish for ages. Now a couple of friends from back home have requested prints and I’d like them to stand the test of time.

    Any suggestions?

While I don’t know much about the R200 series, which coincidentally, somebody was asking about a few weeks ago — I do know that the Epson R800 and the newer R1800 use archival quality pigment inks as opposed to dye inks in a special 8 color process. These inks are apparently rated to 104 years under normal lighting conditions and 200 years under the absence of light, assuming you use acid free archival papers that won’t sabotage your expensive inks. Nobody ever found out if the inks and/or cartridges for the R1800 were backwards compatible to the rest of the series

I’ve been pleased with the few scans I’ve sent to AdoramaPix. AdoramaPix uses Noritsu QSS-31 laser transfer printers (which expose standard papers via a laser scanning system) on Ilford papers.

Off to do some research to see if I can use those ink tanks. What I really like about my Epson is the 6 individual tanks. However, I’ve noticed fading on a couple of ‘fridge photos already.

Thanks a lot for the overview 🙂
