Elsinore
KeymasterElsinore would you delete my 2011-01-19 10:45:20 PM entry? I entered the wrong pic, and it’s already been removed.
Yep got it.

ParticipantI actually liked this one. But people who can actually see colors well (not me) told me that the wall was too brown. Plus, I guess the popped part is more than one color. But it held to the spirit of the theme.
This one was with no flash. The other ‘B’ with the gray-tone wall used flash.

ParticipantOh, NOW you chime in. After I posted the door. 🙂
Sorry, it’s been an evening. We lost power at the house right before I left work, and it was out for eight minutes longer than my UPS is good for. So I had to reboot the servers, then go and take my second shot (the high-key one) and process it. On top of that I was having all kinds of posting fail for some reason =P
It’s a cool shot though. I didn’t mention it ’cause I really like the outlet, but I’m weird like that.

Thanks. That one had her eyes open and the brown was a secondary pop, and not *quite* what I was going for anyhow.

ParticipantTake a photo that appears to be black and white/grayscale with the exception of one object or color. Difficulty: No selective desaturation or other post-processing tricks to create the effect.
Theme suggestion kudos to mopsy!
I am thrilled with the response and quality of the photos. When this discussion thread first started out I thought, “Oh no! It’s going to be the first time that no photos show up for a contest!” But whoa, the challenge went out and many responded! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
i’m happy that you are happy mopsy and i like a lot of the entries. BUT we sure are being liberal with the B&W/greyscale part.
yeah, i’m known for being anal, why did you ask.

Perhaps not anal, but constipated?

nope. those who have been here a few years know i’m a purist in interrupting theme descriptions. other words have been used and as a rule i keep quiet now. this one just set me off. no offense was meant and i hope none implied.

KeymasterThe only one that really concerns me is Ennuipoet‘s “I close my eyes and I see blood and roses”. That one has the rose and the blood color popped against white, so it’s really two different colors–red and green–and two different objects. the rose/its stem and the blood.

ParticipantI feel my arse getting kicked already, and that’s only by the previews here….next time, Gadget, next tiiimmme….
Now that I can see it, I gotta echo the others. I think you brought a pretty good game this week. The Dali is both creative and funny and the scorpion is cool, especially after knowing that you made it with a single piece of wire.

ParticipantMan I am kinda worried about my second entry. The fire crackers sure pop out but now the background cloth I used is looking less than true b/w. It almost looks like it has a greenish tint to it? I know it is actually black and medium dark gray. its the same piece of cloth I used in last weeks theme behind the skull candles. Is it close enough? I can pull it and pick something else if I have to.
January 20, 2011 at 5:41 am #36205CauseISaidSo
ParticipantIt does have a slight green tint to it, loki, but I don’t think it’s bad enough to pull it.
January 20, 2011 at 5:46 am #36206lokisbong
ParticipantI was paying so much attention to how sharp it looked that I didn’t even notice the slight greenness until I had it posted. all I can guess is the stupid florescent bulb caused it. It’s supposed to be one of those “natural light” bulbs if I remember right. Maybe I got the white balance on the wrong setting?
January 20, 2011 at 5:50 am #36207CauseISaidSo
ParticipantDo you shoot in RAW and use Canon’s DPP? If so, choose the “Click white balance” option of the White balance adjustment and then click anywhere on the cloth. The point you click doesn’t have to be white – it’ll adjust the photo so that the point you click is a shade of white (i.e. gray) and should remove the green tint without affecting the red of the firecrackers much at all.
January 20, 2011 at 6:03 am #36208lokisbong
ParticipantNo unfortunately I have not been doing that. I do need to start shooting in raw but I think my main reason for not doing that is if I don’t process them right away the windows viewer can’t show them to me and I forget what I have and which shots are good and which are not. if I remember right the previous install of dpp didn’t work correctly and only loaded when it felt like it. So I was lazy and just shot jpegs. I have since reinstalled windows and all the canon stuff is fresh and new and works correctly. I just need to break my old habit and try to make shooting raw how I do things I guess.
January 20, 2011 at 6:09 am #36209CauseISaidSo
ParticipantYou can start getting into RAW slowly by shooting both. That way you’ve got instant display and the RAW to play around with if you want it. The downside is that it takes up a lot more space on your memory cards. I did it that way for a couple of years before finally moving to exclusively RAW.
