Participantthanks for the article anneb. BTW you link is missing one of theses “H” at the very beginning.
Urk- fixed!
When I was in college, I did several “Great scenes from literature” in Lego. Hamlet, Macbeth, Tale of Two cities (guillotine was awesome!) But the pix I shot were horrible, I didn’t have anything but an on-board totally manual flash, and not a very short lens. I’m sorely tempted to try something along those lines.
Would need to either get new peeps to re-create or come up with a scene…Maybe something from “Peep Fiction” Laughing
OMG, that would be far too scary! (: Then reuse the Samuel L. Jackson peep for “peeps on a plane” (requires Gummy worms) (No, I’m not even going to try THAT one…)

ParticipantAre you sure you want to make it that broad? And by broad, I’m talking about my sister…seeing a picture of somebody hold the door for her as she heads into the local Burger King might be good manners, but I don’t think it would make a compelling shot. The heroic shot would be somebody blocking it actually. 🙂
Occasionally, though, there is the shot of someone holding a door for someone else, where the shot contains the answer to the question “why should I care?“, i.e. why is this door holding more special (and heroic) than all other door holdings? And that shot will be damned good, and we will all want to see it!
Of course, with my sense of timing, I will only ever stumble on that shot opportunity on a week that Farktography has the theme, “still life with rocks.”

ParticipantThe gray cards I get from Penn don’t have pictures of anybody. 😥

Participanti just ordered a canon 30d, and they were trying to sell me an extended warranty with the promise that the yearly cleanings would more than make up for it.
for those with dslr cameras, how often do you get it cleaned/clean it? do you take it somewhere, or do it yourself? what do you recommend?
I’ve only had my D70 sent out for cleaning, once. I give you “Exhibit A”:

(http://www.flickr.com/photos/10558282@N00/397829099/)I think for the most part, it depends on how you’re going to use it. If you’re not swapping lenses very often, and if, when you are, you’re not doing so exposed, out in the wind, you may well not need it. I’m more likely to carry two bodies around with me now. I shoot a lot of prep sports, and I want both super long and tight range, sometimes within a few seconds of each other. When I do swap lenses out, it’s under reasonable shelter. Both before and after that episode at the kite festival- when I got careless in part because I hadn’t had problems up till then- I’ve not really had any problems with sensor dandruff.
The helpful folks at Penn Camera stressed to me, though: no brush, no compressed air, only the little hand-sqeezed poofy blower. You don’t want to press the dust against the sensor with enough force to damage it, and bristles or forced air can potentially both do just that.

ParticipantGallery II is more robust than Gallery. It stores raw pictures off to the side, and allows you some ability to prevent comment spam (something that happened to one of my NatZoo pix, go figure.)
Along with my flickr, I have some other shots up on a friend’s gallery site, go poke around if you’re curious, and I suspect he won’t mind fielding the odd question about it, especially in terms of site security. http://www.ooblick.com/gallery/v/anneb points to my little portion of his world.

ParticipantCongrats, that’s awesome!

ParticipantVery nice! The flash-frozen yellow flower is wonderful.
I find the side-by-side in “and read about” really helpful, since flash is one of those things I’m constantly strugglng with. How were you flashing them?

ParticipantElsinore, very true… Curious, I am still giggling about your Miss Juvy road sign. If it were mine, I’d be sorely tempted to give it a little bouquet and crown somewhere.
Miller, the straws didn’t come out at all like I expected they would. I’m not complaining, I’m actually kind of fascinated, myself. I think if I’d gotten it earlier in the day, I wouldn’t have had to play around with the plant lights, and gotten something tamer than the funky reflections up the straws. Let’s hear it for procrastiation!

Participant😯 Best voting I’ve ever gotten, ever, and it’s potty humor! sob.
[beat head on wall]
[back to ignoring votes]

ParticipantAgreeing with millera9- I like the yellow one, best, and I think they’re all far improved from the last batch!
The silver car is just going to be a harder candidate- if you don’t have really intense daylight, the metallic color has more trouble differentiating itself from the background. Especially this time of year, when the plants and background are so much “grayer” on their own, and the sun isn’t as high in the sky. The lighting on the third shot is actually pretty good, considering- but the angle from the camera seems a bit high or something.

ParticipantI often wonder what characteristics/criteria people look for when voting.
Looks like the douch-nozzle buzz-kills are out in force this week. I have a new idea; let’s just submit our most popular photo every week, regardless of the theme.
That’s a great idea! I’ll put it up again next week!
So… before people vote, how will I know they’re popular?
I’ll have to put the same picture up, week after week.
but, then I’ll have to take them all down, for being duplicates!
So my photo will not be popular, after all!
Then I can put it up, in defiance of the status quo!
And everyone will ignore my photos, and I shall have to give up my current life, go off, wear black, and write bad poetry.Mods: Dagnabbit, I DESPARATELY need a “head explodes” smiley!!!!
😈
(One day, when I’m great and garner zillions of votes, I will have all the confidence in the world, and can ignore those sorts of comments. ‘Till then…. I had better just ignore them, or I’ll get depressed, and won’t keep trying to get to the pinnacle 😉 )

ParticipantFollowing on with what Stupido asked, how far afield can we drift, here, and still be in the bounds of “fair?”
I’m not doing well with getting a holga plugin to download and load up, so I must be doing something wrong. If I can, I’ll try to pull the gimp plugins down later on this evening.
Meanwhile: We’re looking at square formats, 3n x 3n in dimension, potential or severe vignetting, the slightly off-focus that comes from a fixed-focal length camera, saturation of colors, or blown higlights on B&W?
I’ve put up an instamatic shots- one, I’d like to use, so I’d like a rules call on this one:

(flickr URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/10558282@N00/351907088/)It’s 110 instamatic print, cropped to square- is it something that can stand as appropriate on its own, or should I be running it through some filters, once I get either photoshop or CS working?

Participantwell i may have to eat some humble pie ………. yum pie ………. regarding in camera effects. bought a Samsung D53 for a friend for Christmas.
Agreed. Mmmmmmm, pie!
black friday sale at wal-mart, camera and 1 GB SD card for just over a hundred dollars. it is similar in features to this one http://www.samsungcamerausa.com/productdetails.asp?productid=206 which has all sorts of built in filters and effects. see about halfway down the page. the framing effects done in camera would prompt accusations of PS when viewed. the color effects are interesting also.
oh well, we have said many times that the line is getting blurred. seems like it is even more so than i thought.
Happy New Year
(bold emphasis mine –anneb)
Good GRIEF! The scrapbookers have moved the war from the album directly on to the camera ITSELF!
There are just some people I’m going to have to hide from forever, should they get their hands on something like that!
anneb
ParticipantWell.
It is time for me to head up to MD and get a better (read: non-rushed) shot of this sign:

(My gallery page for that is at http://www.ooblick.com/gallery/v/anneb/loose_ends/Signs/WTFCU_3104.jpg.html, if there are image loading access probs from my friend’s site)
anneb
ParticipantThere’s not a poll option for “both,” unfortunately. I waffle.
If I want 16-bit because of a lot of color gradation, or don’t want to lose fine detail, I’ll often use raw. Or, if I’m shooting in wonky lighting where I can’t win with the camera WB setting, and want to set it later at my monitor when I have time to think about it.
If that’s not an issue, or if it’s family snapshots, or I’m shooting a gajillion pix for something and fancy portrait-type quality isn’t an issue, jpeg works great.
And if I’m shooting for someone else, which ever of the two they’d rather get the pix in.
