At the rate I’m going, my photos are going to be a study in little thermometers… We’re all fighting off ugly colds here in the AnneB household. And here I was hoping to get back into the swing of things this week. I don’t think I’m going to get to some of those outrageously long red line metro escalators.

Postings will come in a bit late for the next few weeks, anyway- my kid is taking a Wed. night swim class (which is what happened last week- I totally forgot to post, ’cause class threw me so off!)

Well it looks like my three highest-rated shots are the three shots I entered in… Last week’s contest. Now what? :O

Now you are glad that your highest rated shot is not *my* highest rated shot, i.e. a scan of an old, damaged print of mutant sewer poodles from heck.

    🙄

At high school games, a big tele *is* your press pass. Srsly.

There’s a couple factors at play here. I shoot prep sports/community events for $SMALL_LOCAL_WEEKLY, and I shoot a D70 and D70s. Some of the “team moms” for visiting teams are out there shooting with better gear than *I* have- D200s and pretty fancy lenses and flash. But the Athletic Directors at the school are generally pretty cool about letting parents have good access (on the field or floor) so long as we behave ourselves! If you’re worried, show up early, and ask the person taking tickets to point you to the Athletic Director, or the school official in charge. Talk to them well before the national anthem gets going. I bump into parents shooting for their kids and teammates pretty regularly. When it gets to district or regional or state championships, though, they start making noises about wanting to see for real creds. But the lens is part of the “uniform,” that’s for sure.

More on “uniforms”- When I covered district wrestling championships a year ago, the guy at the door was very firm, everyone pays, no exceptions. When I opened my coat to pull out my wallet, he saw “photo vest,” he decided all of a sudden that I knew what I was doing, and waved me in. My gear was in plain sight the whole time, my body language didn’t change a bit… still cracks me up when I think about it. Whether it’s getting in to cover the event, or having access to the track/floor/etc, it’s all different aspects of the same thing.

Looks a lot like sensor dandruff to me, to be honest.

could someone who “gets it” please explain to me, BTW, why you don’t see it at wider apertures, given that it is on the sensor directly? Or, rather, as close to the sensor as it can get, vs. on the other side of the focusing mechanism (past the lens). I always have thought of it as analogous to dust on the negative or an obstruction on the paper, i.e. more of a shadow than anything else.

Well I can’t see a guy armed with a huge tele lens aiming it at high school cheerleaders coming across as un-creepy, so I try to avoid it. =D

True. And in reality, all you’d get is just the zit on the end of one of their noses, with that tight a zoom. Better swap out lenses (:

My prediction is that some hot cheerleader or fan in the stands is going to get more votes than most of the shots of actual sports. People vote for boobies. But you can exploit that by posting a pic of a hot cheerleader I guess. I mostly shoot high school sports though, so no go for me. =(

Analogy, why not? Here, the local schools have competitive Varsity/JV squads who do pretty demanding routines. It’s the only HS sport besides track that runs 3 seasons, with winter overlap with the gymnastics teams. Unfortunately, they’re not allowed to do much in the way of stunts at games, because they don’t want the cheerleaders hurting themselves on the track. They save those for competitions. The most a fan at the game is likely to see is pyramids and basket catches when they’re out on the track, or handsprings indoors.

In terms of fans and other “fru” at games- they’re part of the sports experience, too. “Sports” is kinda vague that way, vs. “sports action” or “the fan,” but hey, it’s farktography, and it’s cool to see the variety!

So, a few days later: How’s the stuff with the lawyers and terms of use shaking out?

Here’s an opposing view. It’s the terms and conditions for submitting something to the BBC news site:

In contributing to BBC News you agree to grant us a royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to publish and otherwise use the material in any way that we want, and in any media worldwide. This may include the transmission of the material by our overseas partners; these are all reputable foreign news broadcasters who are prohibited from altering the material in any way or making it available to other UK broadcasters or to the print media. (See the Terms and Conditions for the full terms of our rights.)

It’s important to note, however, that you still own the copyright to everything you contribute to BBC News and that if your image and/or video is accepted, we will endeavour to publish your name alongside it on the BBC News website. Please note that due to operational reasons this accreditation will probably not be possible with video. The BBC cannot guarantee that all pictures and/or video will be used and we reserve the right to edit your comments.

    (full terms at http://www.bbc.co.uk/terms/)

That’s pretty clear, and something I have no trouble working with.

It’s good to know Drew’s heart is in the right place, but I can’t have the same faith for what happens once lawyers get involved, and that gives me major pause. It becomes really fuzzy, as well, if I submit a photo that has a copyright notice in the file info in photoshop, say, or I put a creative commons license on it when I” upload it over on flickr. Does flickr trump fark?

It makes me pretty anxious, and even though I’ve been looking forward to the Sports theme, I’m leaning to where Chakaclasp and Analogy are coming from, since I don’t want to rule out anything right now.

…. clearly, fark itself is taking the lead in setting tone for tonight’s contest.

I found another photo to process and upload while I was waiting for my first photo to post.
    Is this good? or bad?
Only my hairdresser knows for sure.

Hm. I wonder what a moody fish would look like. They always just look “hungry” to me. Maybe if “the big person” stood outside the tank for a very long time without dropping more food in, they might start to get that way….

Heh- I’m glad it’s not just me, then. I’m less of an IT geek than I used to be when I got paid for it, but am using the computer a bunch anway. For a couple years, I carpooled with a database admin who had lost his sight many years back, (yes, and when you ask about “carpool,” his dog and I swapped off driving duties d: ) — and while the software he had was great and worked for him, I really got a firm reminder burned into my head exactly what I have to lose. The glasses, I’ve had since I was 11, they’re not a hassle. The fact that the near-vision is giving me problems gives me pause, along with the headaches. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a share in geezerworld, and DEFINITELY a reminder to be nice to the kid who is going to have to put me in there some day 😉

Well… better late than never? I got my two up, I shot them Tuesday evening, but FINALLY today got to sit down to photoshop. They’re not as smooth as I’d like, but I am pretty happy with a very first go at it. I’ve got one question, and I’ll devotinate the first if it doesn’t fit the rules- I did some layer erasing on the middle layer to smooth the breakpoints on the cherry blossoms- no tweaking the picture, just which one is on “top.” Is that ok or not ok for the week?

I must admit, I’m really blown away by peoples’ entries, and I think I’m going to have to do some more playing around with this. (And, I think, working on the first one some more to get it a bit cleaner, too.)

damn it, why didnt I think of taking a shot of a light poll during the day and titling in behind the scenes ufo hunting

I thought of submitting http://www.flickr.com/photos/annebphoto/421649060/ with the caption, “NASA workers prepare UFOs to hang above street” but figured I’d hold it in case we really DO do streetlights as a theme. Or “Geometric shapes and crayola colors” or something. 😉
