Nailed it in one, actually. I’ve got a few other angles that we tried for various reasons, but they didn’t really work out very well.

There are three strobes used in that shot – one to near high camera left in a mini-softbox (15″x15″), one to far middle camera right for back/rimlighting, and one on-camera I used for fill and as the Commander for the other two lights. I use Nikon’s “CLS” or “Creative Lighting System” a lot for this sort of thing.

(And while the camera settings are all manual, I use TTL a lot for the CLS lighting…)

The “bullet” is held up by a very thin thread to her upper hand. Took the thread out in post. So this wouldn’t be a Farktography candidate…

Awesome! Now I wanna try that. Just gotta figure out how to get one of those trigger sets for my b-day or christmas. I plan on getting a set of macro extension tubes for myself for my birthday so that’s gonna have to wait a month or so I guess.

If you’re electronically-inclined, you can build one.

Still can’t figure out why the guy at the motocross would use a fill flash, though.

A couple of months ago, I was out shooting with a D7000 (same make as mentioned) and got the silly comment, “Only a n00b shoots with on-camera flash.”

I pointed out the three SB-800s on lightstands at distances in the location. I was using the pop-up to control those, while the pop-up was configured to “–“, or “don’t contribute to the image, just fire the remotes.”

What you think you see may or may not be what’s really going on.

You need to get one of those chimney things to light the briquettes and never taste fuel again.

    “Briquettes?”

Our charcoal comes in “chunks” in 50lb bags a buddy of mine gets from somewhere. Mesquite wood real charcoal. 😀

I will be having a more thorough rant on this elsewhere later, but we have totally given up real liberty in favor of the appearance of security. America used to be a great nation. Now we’re a nation of cowards.

That’s been true at least since Executive Order 9066, if not earlier.

Senator McCarthy certainly didn’t help any. Nor Rahm Emmanuel, among others.

When I was a cop, before 9/11, my peers used to moan about how restricted they were! We had to have reasonable suspicion or belief that someone was committing a crime before we stop them. We needed to have probable cause before arresting them. I imagine those peers are wetting themselves with joy these days because they can stop anyone the please merely by inventing a anti-terrorism excuse.

I’ll bet on a few of those former peers being TSA employees now.

I’ve often wondered how many current TSA employees are only ex-police because they were terminated with cause – the same as I wonder how many current TSA employees are ex-military because they’re out on a Big Chicken Dinner.

Seeing that photo, the instant voiceover in my head was an Emperor Palpatine saying, “Yesssss. Goooood.” adorable photo

My wife’s comment was, “What? Where are my frickin’ sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads?”

caradoc, I think at some point you provided a link for a home made lightning trigger? Or some of us were going to commission you to make some for us (though now with the baby that may no longer be possible.) I’m still interested in either.

    Linky for trigger schematics, etc.

You can find an “inexpensive” trigger pre-built here:

    http://www.aeophoto.com/

…and the more expensive “original” version here:

OK… here’s a project for the builders here… can you build a remote with a dollar-store universal remote?

Probably. But why bother? IR remotes are dirt cheap.

    Nikon: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ml-l3-wireless-ir-remote-control-for-nikon-d90-d80-d70-more-45428

    Canon: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jianisi-digital-slr-remote-for-canon-5577

    Universal: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/wireless-ir-remote-control-for-sony-canon-nikon-olympus-pentax-1-cr2025-50684

Dunno about you, but my time’s worth more than it would take to build an IR remote for the camera.

Building a lightning trigger cost me about $40 in parts and an hour or two of soldering and debugging – retail for one is $150-$300, depending.

Building a remote IR trigger would cost me about $10 in parts and more than a few hours decoding and replicating the PCM signaling.

So far I’m not seeing much to make me favor this over Facebook.

There’s one thing that’s gotten me using G+ over FB immediately:

NO GODDAMNED FARMVILLE (or other stupid effing game/app) SPAM!
