ParticipantThanks, everyone!

ParticipantI hope you’re using a tripod at those close-focus distances. When I’m using an actual macro lens + an extension tube, my own heartbeat/pulse can throw focus off.
caradoc
ParticipantI tried using the ‘macro’ lens that came with my camera taped up to a reversed ‘telescope’ lens of the same; I got much closer (up to 6 inched from 16″ with just the ‘macro’), but could not focus on my subjects easily; got focused around them, but in 80 or so pictures, never on them.
This is the kind of case where a “macro rail,” or “focus rack,” like this one comes in very handy.
I don’t have one. I’m planning on getting one.
caradoc
ParticipantNot sure about other Arizona Farktographers, but there’s a sizable contingent of the Arizona Strobists.
caradoc
ParticipantIf you happen to have a EF lens model Canon camera, then we could even use your body as it would be compatible to my telescope adapter.
All this reminds me I need to dig up my car lighter power adapter for remote scoping…
1) I shoot Nikon – but I have a T-mount adapter for it.
2) I have a portable power pack that’ll provide 110V/60Hz/300W for a while.
So, yeah, we could probably do something.

ParticipantExcellent!! I saw this on the ‘best of’ page; had no idea, of course, it was your work. Nice job!
If you’re a regular reader of the AZ Republic/AZCentral or Phoenix New Times, they usually have something of mine in the “Entertainment” or “Arts and Leisure” sections four or more times per season:
I’m just stoked about Michael Peck’s selection for the “Best Actor We’d Like to See on the Big Screen” – he deserves it.
caradoc
ParticipantNice! Lightning’s one of my favorite subjects…
caradoc
ParticipantOkay if there’s just ‘one’ manmade thing? I have a thought of a mountain range, one of which has a big “<—Phoenix" sign on it (back in the days before there were many roads, it's how people knew they were on the right track and not just lost in the desert). It should look lovely at sunset–if it's okay to use.
That’s actually for aircraft – the whole story is here.

ParticipantIdeas on what the problem may be and how to resolve?
You are probably closer than the minimum focus distance for that lens.
Get a real 1:1 macro lens, and you’ll be able to get much closer. Or a reversing ring. Or any number of options.
caradoc
ParticipantSure. We have gatherings of the AZStrobist crowd (http://www.flickr.com/groups/azstrobist) fairly regularly, 2-3 times a year. Or you can come out stormchasing with me next month… I generally log about 12,000 miles on the Forester every monsoon season. 😉

ParticipantI’ve been effing *thrilled* with my Tamron 90mm. It’s definitely well under $3000… currently going for $460ish with a $50 rebate (B&H, Adorama.)
It works well for macro:
It works well for portraiture:
I get angry when people insist that their particular brand of lens is “the only way to do it.” If you can’t justify the expenditure, you can’t justify the expenditure. There’s nothing *wrong* with “good enough.”
caradoc
ParticipantBest bet’s a good screen calibrator. I use a Huey Pro.
There are other devices, like the Spyder, that can deal with calibrating the screen *and* the printer.
caradoc
ParticipantI’ve given up on trying to reason out the voting trends, and just go with “De gustibus disputandum non est.”
caradoc
ParticipantHooray! I got mine in on time, remembered to enable voting, and linked ’em!
I usually miss on one of those…
