I’ve got a good bit more than just my photos to worry about, so I have two separate external backups that I rotate through. Although I haven’t done so yet (and desparately need to), the idea is to rotate those externals through a safety deposit box every couple of weeks or so. I’ve got 2TB of RAID 10 on my development PC and with the two externals, I’m fairly well protected against a hardware failure, but I still need to get it offsite at some point. I do always take one of the externals with me whenever I travel.

If you watch CompUSA/Tiger Direct/etc, you’ll see 1-2TB externals come through for less than $90 pretty frequently. For backup software itself, I use SyncBack. There’s both a free and paid version of it, but the free version should suit most everyone’s needs.

That’s the second request (the other from Kestrana) for personal stats, olavf, so I’ll move that up in priority and see what I can do. Unfortunately, work and other real life committments are weighing pretty heavy on me right now. I may have to bow out of a few contests and use that time for the site, as much as I hate doing that. 🙁

It appears I had a little hiccup myself, not with the scraper but with the piece that updates the web. It’s been updated so the final results are now posted on Bibliostats.

Congrats to U-Man, both for the #1 individual and #1 total.

Since I don’t have it on the web yet, here’s the Recent Top Ten Vote Getters:

Yep, once it sees the “this thread is closed” message, it rolls all of the transient stats collected during the contest into the permanent records and then stops scraping until the next contest.

It scrapes from contest open to contest close every 15 minutes. If an image disappears from one scrape to the next, it’s marked for deletion but not yet deleted (meaning that it won’t show up in stats or on the website, but the thumbnails are kept just in case it reappears). As long as it’s present at the final scrape when the contest closes, it’ll be figured into the final tally; otherwise, it’s permanently deleted.

I just posted this in the Farktography thread, but I’ll post it here, too, just in case: Picasa has hiccupped yet again, so Fark has dropped entries from both plamadude30k and ykarie.

Dangit, Zero, between you and the coastal farktographers posting great scenary shots, you’re all really giving me a travelin’ jones!

I really like the Shannon Falls BC 3 shot. I take it from your last shot that you kayaked? That’s something I’ve always wanted to get into, but lack of any place decent to do so here has kept me from it.

Good job, rav! It’s nice that you added descriptions to all of them. That’s something I’d like to do eventually, but it gets less likely with each shot I take. 🙂

BTW, if you ever need an online reference for HTML & CSS, I highly recommend W3 Schools. They have both step-by-step tutorials and indexed references for HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I’ve found it invaluable.

I just noticed that plamadude30k‘s gone missing again. I checked his image links and they pull up OK outside of Fark. He’s the only one using google/picasa for this contest, so it must be an issue with that. Regardless, they should be live again now.

Plama, they’ve dropped off. Fark periodically checks image links to make sure they’re viable links. If there’s a hiccup in your host (Google/picasa in this case), it’ll drop the links. A Fark mod can reinstate them, so you might try requesting that in the Farktography forum since it looks like Els might be away right now.

Seems like everyone’s got a lot of B’s this week, myself included. Mine are here.

Yeah, I’m about fed up with you east/west coasters and your gorgeous scenary. Not that I’d go out in it even if we had it here with the heatwave we’ve been having (100 degrees in the shade of my back deck).

Lots of nice shots there. The one rav highlights almost makes me queasy.

U-Man, you’re a great portait photographer (and it doesn’t hurt that your subjects are so cute) but I’m not sure that last one will get any traction in this contest. The first one is also cute and more in line with the theme, I think.
