wow, those long exposures really make for a fantasy sky. Hard to pick a favorite.

Was that fisheye one of these, by any chance? They’re sold under several brand names…neat thing about them is that they’re marketed as EF-S, but function on EF mounts…

Yaknow, we have enough folks within say, six hours of anyfreakinwhere in NM or southern CO to pull off a 2-3 day hike/camp/day/night group photojourney.
edit:Taos and the surrounding area could be a lot of fun.

It’d be more than 6 hrs for me, but depending on, well frankly, a lot of things but timing primarily, I might be interested in such an endeavor. Always wanted to explore more of NM.

Another alternative that I’ve suggested half-heartedly before but am sincerely interested in with the right group of folks (i.e., folks like chup that know what they’re doing with astrophotography and from which I could learn a thing or two) is the Okie-Tex Star Party that’s held every year in the OK panhandle. Supposedly some of the darkest skies in the lower 48.

One of these days I’ll actually be able to spend some $ on a tube assembly and mount, but for now I think I’m gonna blow my income tax refund on one of these and maybe a 2x extender for the DSLR. And you’re right, the desert SW has a lot of very nice holes in the light pollution map. I was amazed at being able to see the entire little dipper from inside town 1000′ away from a lit-up soccer field. I’d like to do the Okie-Tex thing, I’m only a little more than a couple hours from anywhere in the OK panhandle. Maybe we need to start up a thread dedicated to the idea and see who’s interested. I could easily manage a week in July, which is great timing for DSOs (the Milky Way’s central bulge is highest in the southern sky about that time) and we wouldn’t freeze after dark like the rest of the year out here.

Damn there are a lot of great pictures in that album. Looks like you all had fun. I wonder if there are any people around here who would be willing to do a photowalk? gonna have to find out somehow.

And I just got an extra week’s vacation this year to burn somehow…

I’ve had a 2x on my wish list for ages now. A resulting 400@f5.6 (which I’d likely need to run at f8 for sharp stars) would be very good for most of the mid-sized DSOs out there.

It still amazes me that M31 is so bright that it shows up so prominantly even untracked. Nice shots!

I think my first encounter with this subject was via Leonard Nimoy on In Search Of circa 1972. 😉

At least it’s going to be harder to paint them as a patent troll; it’s not as if they were merely a holding company for IP. They actually have an interest in producing goods with their IP.

But yeah, sad to see it happening. They really need to come out swinging and gain some market share with their hardware, though, or this tactic is merely going to delay the inevitable. Ya just can’t survive long-term on IP alone.

I really got a kick out of the “before/after” series of pics…very well done, and very funny.

FWIW, you could have a sensor in a cardboard box and still get the benefit of the good glass… (other than the flippant comment I’m of no use, tho 😉
