That’s a great way to lose readers… reminds me of Antinous over at boingboing.

…all I heard was 36megapixels…. if canon offers a body with that rez for under 3 grand, I’ll be selling a used 5DII…

Sheesh… those clowns in the comments section make the FARK politics tab look like a Pulitzer laureate convention. Quite the collection of childish twits.

At times I wish we could detonate just one more nuke above ground, if only to train some state of the art cameras on it for the first 10ms or so. I look at that image and really want to see the whole development at microsecond intervals. Is there any way to see the magnetic field around that blast? I’ll add that to the wishlist as well…

Rav, I really like the eclipse with the cityscape in the foreground. The big reason I was so excited about this eclipse in particular was that with it so low to the horizon (my locale was in the perfect place to catch totality sitting on the horizon) that I could pick and choose what to have superimposed in the foreground. I had a farmhouse with a few trees surrounded by empty plains and a spot scouted out a mile away that left the place skylit on the horizon. I had it all planned out, and got to watch water crystallize instead. 🙁

Orionid, not to worry… that big cloud of fog is still here. It’s a little thinner than it was, and the temp is going up, so it’ll likely be gone before the day is out. We’ve had almost no wind the past few days, so it just parked on us.

(edit)The nice thing about this white stuff is that it plated out on everything. Random ice crystals in a layer about 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick and practically weightless, so it didn’t break tree limbs or kill power to neighborhoods.

    Wow! That’s beautiful!

    Thank you! 🙂

I’d still rather have done a series of the eclipse…

Nice shots, folks! Wish I could have seen it… karma conspired against me; I had to work til midnight (and drive for 3 hrs in the freezing fog). It looks pretty out there, but I HAD TO MISS THE FREAKIN ECLIPSE!

The astrotrac is one of 2 current contenders, the other being this little guy: http://www.sciencecenter.net/hutech/kenko/skymemo/

Both seem capable of accurate tracking over as long as I’m likely to expose, but the second one won’t need to be re-set every hour-ish like the astrotrac. Also, it looks like the astrotrac is on backorder everywhere. Certainly happy news for the maker, not so much for the consumer…

My god, it’s full of stars! 😉

I’m about to pull the trigger on a tracking mount built for DSLRs. I’ll never get any AP done if I keep waiting around to save enough for that G11 and a Royce mirror.

    Man, those skies are gorgeous….

, There are 4 galaxies that I know of visible to the naked eye… Andromeda, the large and small Megallanic clouds and our own Milky Way. The LMC and SMC are satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. Andromeda has a pair of satellites as well, visible in photos. If you get out with binoculars on a dark night there are many, many galaxies visible.

I was thinking more of a hard reboot, but reloading firmware might work too.

That would be a much quicker option, and prolly aughtta be tried first…

The main thing that keeps me from schlepping it around always is that I have a Jeep. With a soft top, all you need to break in is an opposable thumb. I do manage to bring it more often than not, even if it doesn’t always get pulled out.

Exact same boat here. I’ve been toying with the idea of buying one of those lockboxes that fits in the space between the back seat and the rear door. My other option was to bolt an appropriately shaped sheet of metal to the deck behid the seat and up over that same space, leaving the back open to make access from the rear door simple. Of course with winter on the way it’s time I put the lid back on anyway (I do have a hard top in the garage). I could drive one of the other cars, but it’s hard to beat a wrangler for getting you wherever you want to go.

Aside from that, I’ve almost always got a P&S in my pocket.

This really strikes a nerve with me, I used to construct all manner of stellations out of paper, toothpicks, wire/solder, etc… This really made for a nice image!
