ParticipantI’m befuddled by technology tonight. I posted the same pic twice. The first one was broken so I re-uploaded to flikr and re-posted, now the first one is unbroken. Help!

ParticipantI watched Kiss Me, Stupid last night which stars Mr. Hand, so I’m really getting a kick, etc. etc.
Seriously though, I didn’t have any pics until just about 10 minutes ago. My hand is still a little sandy and smells like chocolate syrup, but I’m looking forward to this one.

ParticipantDammit, it looks like I forgot to envotenate my windowpane shot 2011-02-16 08:02:30 PM. Can I get a better-late-than-never helping hand please?

ParticipantI almost never shoot specifically for a theme. I just mine the archives for something that fits. But it turns out I never take pictures of things in 3’s. There’s only 3 pics I’ve ever taken that even come close to fitting the theme. I wonder why that is.
It almost feels like I should sit this one out, but what the hell, I’ll use the 3 I have.January 9, 2011 at 9:10 pm #37692harpo
ParticipantWow, thanks for all the kind words and advice. Lots of good stuff.
My first thought was to frame them for sure. More attractive to buyers as Uranus says. But you make a good point too olavf. With just matting the buyer would have a lot more flexibility. And, having ordered frames by mail before, I know how much that can cost. But Curious has a good point too. I could see going either way – I think I’ll have to ask what previous artists have done.
The location in question does have lots and lots of wall space so I think something like 18×20 will be appropriate. At that size I think not having a frame would look wrong – what do you think olavf?
Thanks for taking the time to distill all your research ennuipoet. Your guide to coming up with prices makes a lot of sense.
I think limited runs are the way to go. It’s a funny concept though since all my pics are on flikr for free if you know where to look. I guess it’s the signature and numbering that give them value? And I like Choc-Ful-A’s idea of a fact sheet on back. These are some of my favorite pics. The mushrooms are hanging on my wall at home. So I’d hate to lose the ability to use them in the future, but I guess that’s how it works.
Big borders are in! That’s one thing I know for sure anyway.
The next step is to go look at the space again and talk to the owner about previous works. You guys have given me more than enough ammo to be able to do that without sounding like a fool. Thanks!

ParticipantA better-late-than-never thanks, all. Especially to mopsy – high praise indeed.

ParticipantOrionid & Kestrana – Just seeing if you were paying attention. 3 for 3 – I guess I was in a colorful mood.

ParticipantAll good ideas so far. Medical research would be my first pick. As someone who suffers from sarcoidosis (which spell check still doesn’t recognize as a thing, an indication of how well the search for a cure is going) I’d love to see even a small portion go to fighting that, admittedly for purely selfish reasons.

ParticipantThanks olavf. Help me Lady E, you’re my only hope.
I’m heading into the woods and will be incommunicado so I’ll just keep my fingers crossed.August 6, 2010 at 6:32 pm #30263harpo
ParticipantI’ve never encountered this problem before: my 2010-08-04 08:02:48 PM entry is deleted for broken/missing image. I didn’t change anything on flikr…pic’s still there. Any ideas? The picture was up for a long time and had a few votes but this morning it’s gone.

ParticipantWhite men can’t jump.
Yeah my first thought on seeing ‘dominant white theme’ was a pic of me holding a whip, maybe wearing leather chaps, watching Friends and drinking merlot.

ParticipantI had a couple ideas for this one but they didn’t pan out. So my only contribution this week is to recommend Lars Von Trier’s The Element of Crime to anyone who hasn’t seen it. A great flick and every scene has unique lighting that goes great with this theme.

ParticipantThanks linguine – I ended up with some pretty good results I think. My problem was – just like with AutoCAD – there’s 5 different ways to do everything in gimp. I had duplicated the original layer so it never gave me the option to add transparency like it would if I created a new layer. And there’s no obvious “make transparent” command. It turns out “add alpha channel” was what I needed.

ParticipantThanks for the easy-to-follow steps ennuipoet. I have a dumb question for you though. I not much of a shooper at all so bear with me. Using gimp I did steps 1-3 no problem. I can switch between the 2 layers and see both the color and b&w version. But when I erase from the desaturated duplicate layer it just leaves white spots – it doesn’t reveal the color version underneath. I’m sure I could google the answer but I figured I’d just ask the experts.

ParticipantThat’s painted, isn’t it?
Yeah – I guess that falls under “other coatings”. Off to the hardware store to see if I can find anything last-minute I guess 🙂
