dpp is still available from Canon. I’m downloading an update right now.

Without the original CD, the updates won’t install if it’s a new computer/fresh OS install, but you can trick it by doing the following:

    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste in the following:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonEOS Utility]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonDPP]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonZoomBrowser EX]

    3. Save the file as Canon.reg
    4. Double-Click the file and answer Yes when asked if you want to add the information to the registry.

Yea that was my problem. I reformatted my drive then couldn’t find the CD.

The Canon tech gave me the trick over the phone.

I figured out a registry hack that lets you install Canon’s software. I never thought to call them.

They don’t have the software available for download anymore on the website because they are “upgrading”it..or so that is what I was told.
The guy at Canon told me how to download the update and then trick the computer into doing a full install from it.
Anyway they sent me the disc for free and it only took three days to arrive from the day I called. So now I have the original disc if I ever need it.

    here’s my friend’s advice:

    *picassa
*capture one (free 30 day trial)
*aperture (if you’re on a mac)
*you should be able to get Nikonview from Nikon with just your serial number of your camera as proof of ownership

All Canon asked me for was the serial number and they sent me the DPP disc.

It’s worth the call before you spend money and time on software that may or may not do what you need.

I find DPP to be the best for me to use for RAW conversion. Quick & easy.

Before that I used the Olympus master software for RAW again..easy & quick.

I don’t know about Nikon though..it could be as bad as their cameras (kidding 🙂 )

The only thing I really use it for is exposure correction & white balance, all other PP I do in GIMP or PS

Probably won’t help for the shots for this week but call Nikon customer service. They will probably send you a disc with the software if you ask niceley. Tell them you had to reformat your drive and the cd you have keeps giving errors when you try to install.

Thats what I told Canon and they sent me a disc 3 days later.

Wow! orionid 108 votes. Very impressive.

Yeah, way more than I was expecting. This confirms that I’m going to have to wait until an hour before the contest to get an idea for my third pic more often.

And again, thanks for the kudos.

5th place in the highest vote getters ever!!

    Well Done!!

    *Applause*

    / bows to your awesomeness!!!

well my Lumix lasted 2 days and it pooped the bed 🙁 So I took it and got my $ back. Unfortunately they didn’t have much selection left so I ended up grabbing a Sony Cybershot DSC-W120 for $70. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot-DSCW120-Digital-Optical/dp/B0011E4N5C I don’t think it takes as good a shot as the Lumix considering it is supposed to be a more expensive camera but it will do for what I need and it has a few more creative controls.

My wife asked me what the theme was this week and I said “Money Shots”

She said Oh…some perv is gonna post a picture of money with “stuff” on it.

Glad to see U-man prove her right!

    I’d shoot raw,

    I shoot RAW

    I use RAW

Now, see, I keep telling myself I need to do that, but I like pressing the button on top of the camera alot and have a bad habit of filling up my 2 gig cards with jpg’s alone. This might convince me to start using RAW….. Plus maybe I’ll become more judicious about snapping the shot when filesize is a concern. Sort of like eons ago when I used that old filmy-type stuff and was paying for it on a high schooler’s salary.

I have a couple 4 gig cards I bought at staples for $24.00 each. If you are not shooting massive bursts then you really don’t need the super duper lightning fast cards. Each 4 gig holds about 275 RAW files. If I shoot 550 shots I am being a bit too obsessed, but just in case I keep a couple 2 gigs and 1 gig cards in my pocket. LOL!

Plus shooting RAW gives you more control to fix the not so perfect exposed shot that otherwise came out good.

Be prepared for a lot more work in PP though.

I use RAW and adjust WB after also but if I am using a P&S the only shoots JPEGS then I have to think about WB.

In that case I do what nutkick said although I have a gray card.

I went back to CC at lunch today to look again at the open box stuff.

Ended up grabbing one of these http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FS3G-Optical-Digital-Camera/dp/B001CGJ1GK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1231272120&sr=1-3

$64.00 I couldn’t pass it up. Nothing fancy and not alot of user control but good enough for a pocket camera.
