ParticipantI don’t know if this applies to Elements, but is your color mode RGB? I don’t think you can “save as” a JPEG if it’s indexed color etc. Also, have you tried “save for web”?
As soon as I read this I heard *ding* in my head…
The RAW converter was set default to 16bit. Changed it to 8bit and away we go.
Durr…I shoulda known thisThanks!

ParticipantNBD your shots do contain natural rocks, and in the first two, my eyes are particularly drawn to rocks on the side of the stream. The third one definitely seems less focused on the rocks, though.
olavf: I think you’re fine. In the example shot, particularly, the focus is definitely on the rock and fossil. And yeah, it’s not like it’s polished.
I may use the 1st one since I now have the Elsinore seal of approval!
On another note…anyone know what this is? My wife found it in the yard a few years ago when we were digging for new sewer lines.
I took some badass macros of it tonight, but I am not sure what it is. It looks kinda like quartz but it seems browner than it should be.

ParticipantYea I kinda thought that too, that’s why I threw it out here for other opinions.
olavf I have no idea on your question, I would think that if the sides are polished it is out, but if all you show is the fossil???
Hmm…maybe if you didn’t say anything nobody would know. 😉

ParticipantI need some help here. Are these shots “rock” enough? Or is there too much other stuff going on in the photo? I’m thinking of using one of these but not sure which one yet.

ParticipantMy $.02, based on what I was doing from interpretation, is as follows:
Natural, in nature: Go flight
Natural, stacked to resemble sculpture(such that the overall stack is more of a focus than any of the rocks themselves): No go
Natural, randomly tossed about, or collected arbitrarily: Go flight
Naturally polished by a river or beach beating: Go flight
Synthetically polished via tumbler or polishing wheel: No go
Gemstones in the rough: Go flight
Gemstones cut: No go
Broken – following natural cleaves: Go flight
Cut: No go
Geodes: Go flight following above two guidelines
Natural Crystal: Go flight
homegrown crystal: debatable, but some said okay
Raw coal: Go flight
Fossilized wood: Go flight
Coral: No go
Fossilized coral: Go flight
Fossilized Trilobite? Badass go flight as long as it’s not polished.Anyhow, so far for my three shots, my attempt to grow halite crystals is failing, so that one’s going to go away – not sure what will replace it, I have a semi-macro shot of a pile of rough sapphire with a large rough ruby in the center, and as soon as I get the package from my parents house, a semi-macro of a smoky quartz cluster.
Again, just my two cents.
I think since srewjack never came back to clarify we use orionids guidelines.
Elsinore?

ParticipantHeh – Farktography really amuses and confounds me sometimes, but that’s okay. Elsinore and Choc-Ful-A, I loved yours.
Thanks! I really liked this contest and had a bunch of ideas for shooting groups of pictures around a common subject (with some unusual variation). But real life got in the way and I ended up looking for things in the archives photo’s I’ve taken. So I’m glad to hear you liked the pics.
I’d be interested to hear if other people found the idea of a multi-picture theme as interesting as I did. If so, maybe we can think of another theme that encourages the same sort of story telling? I’d like another chance to shoot some photo sequences to convey some complex message again.
I agree this was a fun challenging theme. I had this theme in the back of my mind when shooting since it was suggested and looked like it was gonna be a go. So I would deliberately shoot with this theme as a template.Unfortunately real life got in the way of sifting through the photos and finding the perfect set.
I like the ones I posted but I think I should have put up this one instead of the outside window shot.

ParticipantU-Man The 9 going on 19 is too precious! Careful what you wish for, though…. My niece turns 16 this year and is quite the handful.
Oh no. I’m not wishing she was 19. She is just fine right where she is. 10 years old, able to reason, able to help out around the house….young enough that she still thinks that I’m Superman and is afraid to back-talk.
I have three girls. The first training bra came into our house about two weeks ago. Periods and PMS and boyfriends and breaking up and staying out late and thinking Dad is an old idiot are just around the corner. 🙂 🙁
On a separate note – Redwoodcruzr has two posts. We’re only allowed one this week, correct?
My girls are 24 & 18 (next week).
Enjoy them while they are young. You blink and they have kids of their own!

ParticipantAlthough it was the ‘Sixty hour work week, stuck at home in the country with the baby the rest of the time and can’t get out of the house to shoot photos’ life that was declared ‘sooper lame.’ And all totally tongue in cheek of course 🙂
/disclaimer: I love my wife and daughter, just in case either of them ever ends up here.
Add two more daughters and we have similiar situations.
And don’t get me wrong, I like my life and love my kids and wife. That doesn’t preclude me from getting pissed off and selfish every now and again.
I find this silly little photo contest to be a great distraction from the hectic pace of everyday life.
Add to it a spouse who can’t fathom the enjoyment I get from the sound of a shutter clicking and why I bother with a contest that doesn’t have a prize, you can see why some weeks are tougher than others to get the shots I want.
Although she is starting to realize that no matter how much she protests I am going to do it anyway.( She actually reminded me last week that it was Wednesday and “Don’t you have to go post your photos” 🙄 )Ah..the fun of being married over 20 years!

ParticipantHmmm….. after digging through my archives, I’m now second guessing my primary choice…..
Would three different time/specific parts of the same overall whole be allowed? Ie. three different plays from the same football game?
Yeah, thats fine. Its just like if your entry were a car, and you did a black and white of the whole car, a closeup of a tire on the backside, and then opened the hood to take a photo of the engine. None of the elements in any photo might be in the other photos, but it would be of the same object(like the game). Conversely if your photo was elements of 3 different cars it would not be fine, even if it was the same type of element, like a license plate.
I was aiming for a a contest that showed variety of ways at looking at the same object or scene. If your object or scene is a single football game, or concert that is fine.
Did that make sense? Or did I muddle it up for you? My entry is msot likely going to be a factory I photographed: I am using three different types of photos of the factory, a closeup, a wide angle, and a black and white. Not all the elements will be the same, but it was all parts of the same object, the factory.
Conversely, my second choice is the exact same object, a girl, in three entirely different settings.
I’m sitting here going through all my photos of the barn because that’s going to be my subject. I am looking for three shots from the same perspective taken at different times through the years.
Now you tell me I can use three different perspectives 😯confusion!!!! what to do!!! what to do!!!
Thanks you just opened up a whole slew of new ideas!!

Participantcould someone please post on my behalf?
I don’t usually ask for OBO posts, but I’ve missed a ton of contests recently due to crazy (read “Europe”) working hours. About time I stopped using that as an excuse…
If not – no prob.
If yes – here be links:
