    For whatever reason, the camera does *not* want to focus on her….Got some really awesome shots. All of them sharp as a tack. Except the ones of her. For whatever reason the camera kept wanting to focus *over there*.

    Oh, I have family members for which I’d LOVE to have this problem!! Somehow, the ugly ones in my tree always come out sharp as a tack, requiring much p’shopping to remove moles and warts, and add in missing teeth. 🙁

    //joking!

    ///Not joking.

    You need to tell them that it’s called ‘soft-focus’ and it’s an artistic technique. All the best avant-garde portraiteurs are doing that these days…

    ////congrats on the win!

    Thanks!

    Hm. Hers has a different problem. The pop-up doesn’t always ‘pop up’ on its own but if you catch it with a fingernail it will. It’s probably more of a camera shop thing then. (or not based on how often either of us use the internal flashes)

    Usually what works best for us is explaining the contest, and the concept of the photos we want to them. They’re as weird as we are, and usually ‘get’ the idea we’re going for.

    The biggest problem I have is with the older girl. For whatever reason, the camera does *not* want to focus on her. For example, I took about 100 shots yesterday morning at my buddy’s pond hockey game. Got some really awesome shots. All of them sharp as a tack. Except the ones of her. For whatever reason the camera kept wanting to focus *over there*. And it’s not the first time this has happened 😛

    Yeah, they’ll do that too, sometimes. Fortunately the girls, at least are still AW-y enough…

    LOL! Sounds like something we’d do over here Mopsy!

    “Come out back so I can throw things off the roof at you”

    “Stand here so momma can pretend to hit you with a fish”

    “Hold this sheet and throw your arms up like you’re trying to fly”. “Not quite. Do it again”. “And again”. “And again”…

    So, I went with the 50D which arrived today. I took a minor risk the listing on ebay had the camera used with less than 10K shutter activations but the internal flash wasn’t popping up. I don’t use the internal flash so I risked it. Picked up the camera for 600 bucks. Which is a VERY Nice price on a 50D. The camera arrived today, sure enough the internal flash did not work. I did five minutes of research on the interwebs, located the fix, three seconds to fix, problem solved. Awesome deal on perfectly good camera!

    Merry Christmas to me!

    Sweet! Have fun with it!

    /got a link to the flash fix? Kat’s 20D has a similar problem – you can ‘help’ it but it generally doesn’t pop up on it’s own

    I agree, since that was his intended picture.

    No Bokeh? I’ve been saving a shot for ages :/

    We ended up doing U-Man’s Blur theme instead, and Bokeh is too similar. Believe me, I want to do Bokeh again myself, and we will!

    *sigh* okay. I’ve been hanging on to this picture for nearly a year now. I guess I can wait a little longer…

    😉

    Sorry man, I’m still working on the sun-god robes and the thousand naked women :/

    Elsinore likes this.

    Unfortunately, at this point I’m going to have to save it for another contest. I haven’t even been able to come up with suitable robes 🙁

    Snow (and ice) are some of the hardest things to photograph in well, at least for me. But, most of my experience there has been in the local indoor skating/hockey rink too, so ymmv.

    So, can’t speak too much on the exposure settings, because I don’t have much experience outdoors there, and it’s also going to vary so much depending on angles and reflectivity. I will say, though, that I’ve gotten a lot better results going manual and figuring out what’s working best that day, and not worrying too much about the white balance – I’ve been keeping it on auto, and correcting for that after I get home.

    LOL! Considering how the shot I took for ‘If it splits, it fits’ did, probably not. Unless Drew Barrymore starts returning my phone calls, anyway.

    /unless y’all are having fantasies about my wife too… NTTAWWT, but…

    I’ve got a small-ish studio (8×10′) but I’m lacking in props as well.. I need to hit up Amazon and see if I get lucky, but that one’s going to require a location, and preferably a little while without rain 😛

    I do have one idea that’s do-able, but I suspect I won’t be the only one doing it.
