ParticipantThere are some seriously good entries this week, and not just from the usual suspects!

ParticipantI got my three shots, which, if I’m not entirely happy with, are at least acceptable and (I think) creative. Whether they’re vote getters or not will be up to the viewers (and frankly, I think not, but what the hell…)

ParticipantWell. Not as hot as I thought. I’ll go back to my backup drive for release then. What a disappointment. I’d thought the hard shell would have helped. Not so much.

ParticipantWhat, I was only kidding! Elsewise, I’d have posted a Fic. Sheez. Can’t youz peepholes get a joke?
🙂

ParticipantSo far my plans are (1) a stapler spoofing Picasso’s blue period, (2) a stapler with a mini volleyball with a stapler face drawn on it, and (3) a stapler overdosing while IMing someone about being hardcore.
Past experience tells me they’ll all turn out to be harder than I thought, so I’ll give up, wallow in self pity, get drunk and weep to myself while watching old youtube videos of S/mileage working for their major debut.
WHICH WOULD BE AN EASY SHOT BUT SOME JERK SAID NO SELF PORTRAITS!
Bejezus, I laughed SO hard I either gave meself a hernia or a woody, I’m not sure which yet!!
Turns out it was a woody. Serendipity!!

ParticipantI so need a macro lens. But I will make do with what I have. And I do have some shots, even though I know I’ll be outclassed. Call me an exhibitionist, I don’t care.

ParticipantBug porn? What–NSFW? Where’s the shots! Porn is porn, and I’m *hard* up, so bring it on!!!

ParticipantI resolved this year to post the stuff I like, and what speaks to me, and hope for the best.
But, it’s what’s in my head so it has to get out.
Yep, my consensus, too.
ravnostic
ParticipantIt’s worth it–even if no one currently is interested in the genealogy stuff at present. Someone will be, eventually, I assure you. Best regards, Russ (Rav)

ParticipantActually, I own several, but I use one for my net postings, fossilspringsaz.com. I bought through godaddy, which costs all of 10.99/domain (currently; it’s going up again–ICANN sucks.) With that, you get a free hosting account to create a webpage (which I have, but haven’t done anything with for ages now.)
As it happens, I pay for deluxe hosting (I have many needs), but with the free hosting you get 10 gigs of space with 300 gigs of peoples downloading per month–more than enough for a typical farktographer, I’d imagine. It’s easy to use with filezilla, hardly EVER fails, downloads faster than the flicker type sites, and gives me a backup for not just fark stuff, but all my important docs in case of fire (my parents had one that cooked old family pics, I’d scanned them and all was good with the world), computer theft, hard drive crashes, etc.
It’s a cheap price to pay, and there’s no limit to what I can put up there. I have stitched panorams that are 35 megs that one can download if I provide the link to it. Videos, whatever. It’s a good deal for $11 a year.
Technically, it’s set up so yo u can host a ‘free’ (ad supported) web site, but there’s nothing saying you can’t just use it as a back-up drive.

ParticipantWell, I hope so, Cors. I’m spending part of tomorrow taking pics and uploading them to my website so I can post before I start work Wed. night (I have 1 hour before my work shift in which to do so if I want to be on page one). I’ve thought of a couple of creative idears, none of which involve people. I’m sure there will be a lot of sad looking puppies and kittens, I’m trying to think outside of the box, in hopes of actually getting some votes this time.
I’m sad that I haven’t gotten many votes with my pics; but it just drives me to try to be more and more creative each week that I can participate. The HDRs were fantastic, but I don’t have the technology for that.

ParticipantI’ll say this. Back in the day when Myspace was cool, I attended a number of blog-b-ques for the bloggers, from California to N.Y.C. They were always fun, and I’d love to join in the hilarity that is sure to ensue at a farktography get-together, even though I’m a total farktography newb who’s photos never get any votes (hey, at my first blog-b-que, I met top 10 bloggers I was in awe of, though a couple years later people who came had said they were in awe of me–here’s hoping!!)
So I’m a go, so long as I can 1)afford it (I got a job at least) and 2) can take the time off (I’m currently contract, but hope to be made permanent sooner than later, with benefits.)

ParticipantHaving done a LOT of genealogy work, I agree with Kestrana on copying the front AND back, if any text appears on the back. Scanning will be fine; any UV rays in the scan won’t cause damage if done just once. They make storage boxes for photos that will help preserve them, as well as mylar sleeves. Latex gloves wiped with Isoprop. Alcohol after you put them on(90 %, both available at any drugstore) are better than cotton gloves insofar as fingerprints, etc. (so long as you’re not allergic.)
I will add that you want to do this, and then distribute the photos far and wide among your family. About 5 or 6 years ago, when I was doing the bulk of genealogy work in my family, I scanned tons of pictures (albeit at maybe 6 megapix res, the best we had at the time) from my mom’s archive. A few weeks later, they had a fire caused by an electrical problem in my mom’s car that started in the garage–where she stored all those photos, as well as letters dating back to the 1700’s. All I salvaged out of the ashes were some very few letters from my great-grandmother to her brother circa 1949-54. Everything else was toast. Had I not scanned them, we’d have none of it. So don’t procrastinate. I also scanned the letters and transcribed them and distrib’d to the family for Christmas, as they were badly singed and were not long for this world with the acids caused by smoke and such. The memories you lose could be your own, so I hope you heed my suggestion. Family records cannot be replaced.

ParticipantI have a nice series of shots of Venus being occulted by the moon from 2008; it’s on my youtube account (search ‘ravnostic’); but youtube is performing maintenance so I can’t link it now. But it’s there if anyone wants to look. I have some fantastic shots of the moon taken using a-focal photography with my 11 inch telescope, but they’re on my terabyte backup drive and I’m out and about on my laptop at the moment.
Meanwhile, a little bit off topic, but here’s a link to a shot of the very thin crescent moon (phase 2.09%, doesn’t get much smaller than that to photograph), as well as Mercury and Jupiter. With the crescent so small, you can actually see the 4 Galilian moons of Jupiter that were visible at the time (3 are easy as they are next to each other; Io [closest], Europa, and Ganymede; Callisto is a bit harder to spot on the other side, about twice as far out as Ganymede.) I could only get the moons of Jupiter with our moon due to our moons tiny phase; elsewise, the moon would have been totally overexposed (as it is, Jupiter is overexposed to capture the moons, as is Mercury.)
http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2010/apr/12/moonshot.jpg
Because it’s a 227mm focal length (they were only 5 degrees apart total), and an 2 second exposure on a Canon XTi, the pic isn’t as clear as I’d like due to things in the sky moving quite a bit at that focal length for that amount of time.
