ParticipantI’ll be going out to the deserts, looking for springtime desert blossoms (good thing we had a wet winter!!)

ParticipantOn the other hand, such semantics are what make politics so abhorrent. Bend the rules, tweek the message, fool the public, get elected.
ravnostic
ParticipantThen, from what I read of the rules just now, it should be okay. But from what I feel about the contests’ premise (i.e., good quality photographs without digitally enhancing them), it’s a no. But I’m still a newbie around these parts. What do I know?

ParticipantI just took a look at the Topaz site. IN one before/after example, a light sky got darker, highlighting clouds, and a dark treeline got lighter, highlighting the trees. Looked like HDR to me, but that’s just my opinion. On the other hand, looks light software I’d love to have!

ParticipantI always thought the idea of farktography was do leave the image unprocessed, excepting maybe taking out a link fluffle that might have been on the lens. I don’t correct, in any way, the images I post (and I’m sure it shows; some of my edits of my postings are way better; gamma corrections, saturation, etc.)

ParticipantCurious, ravnostic,
I think I used used irfanview in the past. I shall have a look at them. Not sure about the pro account though; if it means paying with a credit card I am stuffed, because I don’t have one.
And my photos barely count as “rank amateur”, let alone pro…I’ve used it since sometime in the 90’s. It’s improved a lot since then, but it still looks and feels the same way and it’s super easy to use. Plus, it’s not buggy (never crashes), and doesn’t have spyware or malware or any of that crap you might find in newer ‘freeware’ stuff. I swear by it. Of course, it’s no photoshop program, but then it’s not meant to be, either. It’s just a general photo editor.

ParticipantLeicaLens you can also get http://www.irfanview.com/ IfranView which also has a save for web feature and is also free. it too has a preview feature.
a flickr pro account is $25 a year which is reasonable. or i think it is. if you plan on entering regularly and want your images to last/show up months later you almost need paid hosting of some sort.
I love my irfanview; no bugs, and it will often play media files that dont’ play elsewhere. Also allows simple editing of .raw files.
As for the flicker account, I suggest going to godaddy.com instead. Buy one of those off-the-wall cheap as dirt domain names (a couple bucks a year); godaddy will give you a hosting site, which you can treat as a place to keep your pictures rather than on a public forum site. 10 gigs space, and 300G transfer per month, which should accommodate farking needs for a long while.
Technically, if you build a web page with it, it’s ‘ad supported’, but if you just use it as a place to post your pictures from, that’s not an issue. Nearly everything I have posted is from my fossilspringsaz.com domain name, though I actually do pay for my service as I host a number of domains (and I really need to update the fossilsprings one–haven’t touched it in years other than to upload my pics!)
The downside is it’s not a publicly searchable place to store your stuff unless you have the know-how to build it as such. But besides that, it’s a great place to store extra pictures of family, important documents (wills, scripts, whatever), etc, so if your house should burn down (God forbid), you haven’t lost everything.

ParticipantWell I missed out on entries this week. Apparently all the drinking interrupted any decent photographing. Such is life. I should have entries next week, though. Lots of good material in that category.

ParticipantI just made a pin-hole cam, which seems to be the only way to capture the microscope shots. Alignment is a bitch, but it gets the job done. Thanks all for the help!!!
ravnostic
ParticipantYeah, but obviously you’re a girl. Guys can’t get away with that. 😉
ravnostic
ParticipantHoly cow. No wonder my pictures aren’t as good as you farkessionals! I only have my Canon XTi and two lenses (55-85 and 70-300mm), plus two adapters that either double or halve the 55.
I need a better paying job; else I’ll never be able to afford such wonderful toys…

ParticipantWhen I suggested to my daughter that my profile graph looked like a rollercoaster
Besides, we like y’all! Don’t leave us, please!
There’s a profile graph? Where is that?
ravnostic
ParticipantLokisbong, I do that badly every week, and I’m still here. I refuse to admit defeat. Sooner or later, I’ll capture something that will do me proud. Might take a few years and a better camera (I get the feeling my Canon XTi just isn’t up to the challenge), but onward I go regardless.
ravnostic
ParticipantThis is going to be fun, as I still have some of my toys. One question; one toy is a microscope; In addition to the original packaging, would it be okay to overlay to the side some pictures of views through the microscope, to demonstrate while I still have it and use it at the tender age of 41? Or barring that, can I add a couple frames below the voting image of same?
ravnostic
ParticipantI may not have just the photo for this, but I certainly know where to get some! Drunken hilarity may ensue, I feel a bar-hopping session in my near future…
