ravnostic we’ve asked that Farkstronomy II be scheduled in December because there are so many celestial events this year, it will give people time to accumulate some photos. And for those not planning ahead, winter gives clearer skies in general.

I can wait. That gives me time for the eclipse, and the Vesuvial transit, and … stuff.

I’m overthinking this contest. I’ve not nearly tapped into the archives and I’m up to 15 possibilities. Eeesh! Thoughts on this one? I’m including the curves; it’s not so very far from SOOC, really–but even to me, it looks overdone, plasticky, yet it’s one of my favorite shots this year. Rattan–it’s what’s for breakfast…

Too far? The shot depicts the anti-solar point, typically only evident on negative horizons. But, yeah, I tweeked it for emphasis. Too much? I can tone it down…or am I on the wrong trail to begin with?

I like the composition, but I think the saturation is bordering on cartoonish.

I agree – but with the caveat that I have had some really, really orange colors shooting away from a sunset. I can remember one in particular – I took a selfie holding a musky with the setting sun so low that my tripod cast a shadow on me. I looked like a carrot.

/but I know that rav likes da saturated pretty colors, too. 🙂

I do likes my saturations, truth. But I also knows I can overdo’s it. Thanks for the input!

U-Man; kind of the anti-thesis of the theme, imho. Could work with the voting public, though.

I wore the shorts just for you, Barracuda ;-?

I have way too many possible entries for this…so wonder I have trouble with ‘level’ horizons!!

    //might pay off, finally!

The ‘if not’; lens distortion may spoil the opportunities. I might suggest Microsoft’s “ICE” for blending; it seems that I have had good results, though I hate to admit it…

Here’s hoping the software doesn’t get lost. It would be interesting to see how it blends the terrestrial elements in the stack.

IIRC from my days working at GoDaddy, people always had difficulty getting domains to point correctly at sites like these (I saw a lot of it with people in the travel agency business). And I’ll be danged if I recall the fix for it. It had something to do with the www. part (which is normally incidental in most browsers, but played some importance in stuff like this. While you may not be at GoDaddy, their help files might be helpful–the nuts and bolts are the same across the interwebz. http://support.godaddy.com/help/680/managing-dns-for-your-domain-names

Makes a world of difference, huh? I did find that in Deep Sky Stacker, playing with the algorithms makes a huge difference in the result.

You can p.m. me the full sized version…I won’t tell!

I totally agree on the light/darks. Thus far, the more I have of each, the better the final result. Sadly, I’m typing this at 7:19 am local, when I really should be sleeping already, if I’m to go out tonight. I’m lacking motivation, for whatever reason, could be a lot of things…but I hope to get up around 2pm, and start packing.

I’d have to calculate how long I could leave my wide-angle open without getting startrails

600 divided by focal length for APS or 35mm.

/1.6ish if you’ve an APC sensor. I delayed, due to lack of prep, my visit to the galaxy this week. Will do so tomorrow. I happen to like the shot, chupa. Dark Lane goodness.

What a great top 10. This was a really fun one to participate in! Say, isn’t some astronomy theme in the works somewhere?

Nice voting returns, also; our best in a while.

//edit–actually, there was ‘win’ all over–lots of great shots. Congrat’s to U-man ftw!

    G+

Hashtag your destination. Hashtag photowalk. You’ll find one. Even if you don’t go at the time one is happening–there’s your group of people who would know what there is to see, and when to see it.

I’m going out Sunday night; nearly as good conditions (a little warm; noise might be an issue).

Wish her a happy birthday from the farktographers! (or at least from me). She’s a real cutie–you keep getting some awesome photos (U-Man should be afraid–the cute kid market is no longer cornered.) 😉
