where I have found breaks in my star trails for whatever reason, I have found that the easiest way to fix them is to use the lasso tool to cut an adjacent small patch of trail out, save it as a new layer, and then just move it into shape to fill the gap. Since the trails are each very specific defined lines, it works really well.

The healing brush and clone stamp tools don’t come close to the lasso method for these.

actually, with a digital sensor, you risk running into diffraction issues at about f/16 and lower, which can introduce fuzziness in the image.

Not all light pollution is bad. The red in the right-hand side of this image is all pollution from the town.

I’ve never gotten that sort of discontinuation in trails from noise reduction software. I have gotten it in one very long exposure, but it was also windy as hell that night and I’ve chalked it up to the camera maybe being jostled on the tripod by the wind.

On heavily moonlight nights, you’re going to get a lot more light in the sky. When possible, you’ll get the best darkness to the background when the moon is a sliver or less.

Also consider stopping down a bit, to like f/8 or so. You’ll get less stars overall, but that can be good.

I always use noise reduction, and rarely shoot at anything above ISO 100. I just don’t like the noise my camera generates at higher ISO values.

the stuff I did in college doesn’t hold a candle to the things I get up to now. I think of college in the same nostalgic way I think of baby aspirin. See, in college, I was all worried about what people would think and was still trying to fit myself in to this somehow more or less expected actions category. Once I finally left all that behind and decided that being the eccentric dude with cool stuff was my niche, things have gotten much rosier.

I’m really sorry, too. My best pal Shorty died a few years back, and it was incredibly hard.

If it was auto-focus, then maybe I’d be more interested. For manual focus, you could do just as well with many M42 or Contax mount lenses and adapters for a fraction of the money.

What about allowing double exposures in an HDR contest with the stipulation that it has to be done to overlay a whole scene over another whole scene, not as a method for adding a bright full moon behind your howling coyote shot?

my vote would be that in contests where HDR is allowed, then allow multiple exposure stacking, too. I mean, why not? It’s the same thing, in effect, if not result. Especially if only one element of the scene is changed for effect.

We’ve got a bunch of airports!

And I imagine they all have an attacking bear of some sort for photos just like that.

soosh, that’s really gross. I’d vote no-go on that one.

I’d say black, neutral grey, or perhaps off-white.

I wouldn’t expect too much great things from this. You can bring out a lot of noise trying to adjust a RAW file 2 stops.

Then I remember that it’s not photography, it’s Farktography.

    I hate when that happens.
