ParticipantI addition to Schnee 3.0, I’ve started my new job. We don’t even have an office yet – yesterday, we met in a bar! All day! How awesome is that.
Dude, that rules!
Tomorrow, we’re meeting in a library…I’m not in favor of this trend…
But…but…but….. dont librarians get kinda cranky when you kick the keg?

ParticipantI think what Zeke was referring to was the potential to automate the calling process, which, if calling it manually (especially allowing for different time frames depending on vote spread) is going to be a burden on veruca in any way, then it might not be a bad idea to look into that.
Actually, I’m kicking around the idea of taking snapshots of who’s got how many votes at certain points after the contest opens, at say 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours after the contest gets posted. Then we’ve got the historical record of when things happened, and if we want we can stretch the final “call” of the event out a bit. Fark and the FSM will still track total votes over time, but this way we can have a point of a defined “winner”, assuming its still what everyone wants.
Alas, I’m not sure if Fark would close threads when we ask (though that would certainly take care of things on our side)…might be too much hassle even for Heinekin lol.
Nah. Make it Guinness, and I’ll take care of it from our end 😉

ParticipantI actually have more plans for the FSM, but no time.
Word. Although a latenight coding extravaganza last night got me jump started. I might have some new management tricks coming for ft.net.

ParticipantUh, Zeke… Schnee made the FSM. Notice it’s hosted at Schneeworld.net.
I know. But its also his hobby, and he’s been pretty clear about that 🙂 Since it is his hobby, if he gets bored with it one day and wants to walk totally away from it, he wants to be able to do so. Not that that’s a bad thing, that’s just life as a geek 🙂

ParticipantLet us not use the FSM as the canonical reference. As veruca points out, it is “an independent 3rd party website created by a farktography enthusiast for supplemental reference.” Fark is the canonical reference for data. Farktography.net calls the contest after ~24 hours, declaring a winner. If the Farktography.net winner isn’t the actual total vote getter (because of votes coming in after 24 hours), well, that just adds to the controversy.
Correct me if I’ve misread you here schnee, but at some point he may say ‘eh, fuggit’ and quit doing the FSM, just because he’s bored with it and ready to move on. That probably will never happen, but I’m sure he’d like to keep that door open so he’s not locked into managing a hobby in perpetuity. Or have I totally misread you here mi amigo?
If that is the case then the next question that needs an answer is whether we still want to call the event at 24 hours or not. I think we should, as it does give a bit more framework to the event, and opens up the bragging rights. If that’s where we want to go, let’s dust off some of the conversations we had over on the site redesign board, and take the platform to the next level. Anyone game?

ParticipantHaha, cat thread!
From the way Zeke talks, you wouldn’t think we have 2 cats and that he’s always been more of a cat guy than a dog guy 😉
/Jake is indeed beautiful
//picture needs a “We are not amused” caption on itThey’re just lucky I haven’t shaved them yet.

ParticipantThat’s right, they like duct tape even more 😆

Farkback in progress.

ParticipantCongrats!

ParticipantAs opposed to FlickrUploadr? Python’s even slower than Java, which is something of a neat trick in and of itself. Why is it that the longer the name of a language is, the slower and more bloated it’s code is? Think about it…

ParticipantThanks for the input
I got the pro account
Here’s a link http://www.flickr.com/photos/aimlesslass/sets/I’m still uploading quite a bit (slowly on dial up).
I’m editing the descriptions on the fast connection at work.
Check back for updates.
I’ve still got over a year to load 🙄Have you looked at third party tools like jUploader? You can set everything you want on the pictures up, security settings, descriptions, etc, BEFORE you upload. If you’re doing a lot of uploading (or on a slow link!) it’s handy to get everything set the way you want, hit upload, and go to bed. When it’s done, you don’t need to go back and tweak anything.

ParticipantOh 1 more thing.
How can I get the link added to the memberlist page?
Thanks!
It’s attached to your profile that you can edit yourself at http://www.farktography.net/user.php?op=edituser. Once you’ve saved your changes on that page, then click on the ‘Profile’ at the top of this section at http://www.farktography.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=profile&mode=editprofile and click ‘Refresh your postnuke profile’.
Also, if you want to change any of your personal settings, there’s a link at the top of the header, right next to ‘Welcome to the farktography.net’ — just click your name.

ParticipantWe got Elsinore her lights off EBay. Great price, fast turnaround, A+++++ yadda yadda yadda :
Also, Amazon had some of the smaller components (softboxes etc) for reasonable prices.

ParticipantAt long last…. those 9 empty six packs of beer I’ve had sitting in the pantry will be used once more 😉
