Zeke and his PHP-ness (it’s just something I do))

*grin* Just remember, Java is a four letter word, and shouldn’t be used in mixed company 😉

Actually…. Gallery’s one of the better ones out there. However, you do have to stay on top of the patches. That said… is there a particular reason you’ve got to/want to have that function on YOUR web site? Would a flickr account (or similar) meet your needs just as well? If it would for most things, but there are some things you absolutely want kept private, maybe a one-two approach would work better- flickr for all things public, and a private gallery (or other s/w) for personal stuff you dont want the world to see, safely behind lock and key.

On CMS systems — they’re quite good, but in and of themselves they typically dont have a photo gallery. They usually need another plugin to handle the photo module. However, its nice to have the security on everything integrated so you can manage it in one spot. You might check out http://www.cmsmatrix.org/ — theyve got a pretty good handle on most of the CMSs out there, and can help you narrow down the features you want/need.

On PHP based sites — it’s worth pointing out that most everything out there for *nix is going to be PHP based. Everything from Gallery to Nucleus to Drupal to most -nuke sites (with the notable exception of ASPNuke and DotNetNuke) are PHP based. What you’ve been running up until now is PHP based, so don’t let that scare you off 🙂 If you’re worried about Drupal being beyond your expertise, PHP/Postnuke may be as well. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may want to set up some experimental areas on your site, and just check some of the options out, and pick something that suits your taste.

Spec on your web server? Since you were running gallery, it obviously supports php, but if it runs *nix or windows changes your options 🙂 If you’ve grafted PHP on top of a windows platform, you may want to look at DotNetNuke, its very clean, the people behind it have Microsoft helping fund the project, and its one of the best out there. However, if you’re on a *nix platform, you’re definitely looking at a PHP based solution, whether you know it or not 🙂

PS. What is Farkback and how does it help?

A farkback is just a message to the Fark admins. If the thread’s been greenlit but for a really late (e.g. 6am) time, we drop them a note and ask them to bump up the time, and more often than not they’ve been more than willing to accomodate us.

well, he registered last night but is still on probation until 10:30 mst or so – maybe your lovely wife could shorten the waiting period? *wink wink nudge nudge*

he may post something, he’s over at his computer shaking his head and giggling at my nerdiness.

Ooo! 4 more hours until we can sample the stylings of Mr. Bort — should we turn this into a mini contest, see who can spot him first? 😀

i haven’t caught any peeping toms yet….don’t think there’ll be any monkeybort pics tonight. we may see one of mr. bort (aka mr. gray) though.

That just means you need to work harder at goading Mr. Bort into joining us. 😆

Elsinore, veruca. Thanks. I’ll have to go re-read the thread now….done.

I’m not always tactful. I remember sniping at people regarding some assumptions about the FSM and its direction, for example. Not my finest posts.

Maybe so. But man, when you’re on, you’re smooth like buttah 🙂

If I remember right, the biggest recommended size for a 4MP shot is like 11×17. past that, there’s just not enough data in the image to blow it up that big very well. What you could try to do to simulate the effect and see if itll work well is take the picture, chop it up into sections, and print all of the sections on a cheap inkjet. Then tape them all back together to get a 48×15 image. It won’t be your final cut, but it might get you a better idea of what it might look like blown up that big, and whether itll be worth the money to try getting it printed that big or not.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for these responses 🙂

I saw the option for RAW + JPG on the camera and wondered what good it would be (hence no option :P), I never thought of using it as Zeke suggests.

The other reason to consider using RAW+JPG is as a safety net. One of the best features of shooting RAW is being able to twiddle the exposure later. You don’t necessarily have to be spot-on with your lighting; if it’s a little off, you can fix it in postproc. If you’re shooting JPG, and shooting things like candles or christmas tree lights, its real easy to overexpose the light source and/or underexpose the entire shot. If you shoot in RAW+JPG, you can crack open the RAW shot, twiddle the exposure, do some curves work, and salvage shots that might have otherwise been blown. Then you can use JPG for most things, but shots that are a bit off, go fix them using the RAW shot.

Of course, the drawback is disk space and storing both limits the number of images you can shoot/cheap. But with storage getting cheaper almost daily, that tradeoff isnt so bad 🙂

I shoot RAW+JPG. Once I’m done with a shoot, I preview the shots in JPG and pick a couple that I think are the best candidates. From there I use gimp/ufraw to start with the RAW image, get the white balance etc worked out, then pull the result into gimp for final crop/resize. If the JPG looks really good, I may start there, but 9 times out of 10, I can get better results doing some fine tuning in ufraw.
