ParticipantCouple roads you can go down. As a general rule, building your own is usually pretty cost effective. Fry’s is one option, ordering the parts through NewEgg is another. Either way you can be picky with your parts and get good quality parts. The downside is if this is the first time you’ve built your own (or you don’t have the right spares on the shelf) and you run into a snag, it can be a real pain in the butt figuring out what’s wrong. It’s all a question of how much time and effort you want to put into it. (And yes, quad core procs are soooooooo cheap!)
Dell is a good way to go — their low end servers are usually pretty reasonably priced, and they’ll get there quick. Hit Dell.com and go into the small/medium business area.
If you absolutely positively need it today, BestBuy does actually have some decent prices if you shop carefully. They’ve got a Gateway AMD quad core with 4GB of memory for just over $500. Fry’s also has prebuilt systems too, dont they?
Getting a pre-hosted account with an ISP is also an option, and would have you back on the road in no time.
The real question is… how big of a hurry are you in? If you’re not in a rush and have some time to play and learn and experiment, buy the parts and build your own.

ParticipantExiv2 is a very nice tool that will let you see and decode most vendor fields as well as alter them.

ParticipantYeah, its a known issue. A new version of the engine we use to run the site came out not that long ago, and I’m hanging back waiting for any big ugly ™ bugs to surface and get corrected before porting the farktography management code over to it and knocking out this and a couple other issues.

ParticipantWow, it went green early this week!
This is not the greenlight you’re looking for. *Jedi hand wave*

#5 Look to the Skies had 389.
#15 Night Time Photography had 327.
#20 Landscapes had 295.
#36 Black and White Photography had 315.Honestly, we’ve always had ups and downs, but pushing 200 some images in a thread really isn’t a new thing. We’ve always had a lot of pics in our threads, one look at the blue line on the distinct by theme graph tells the tale.

ParticipantI tried hosting an install of gallery on DreamHost, but DH’s database is insanely slow, so I only use them for off-site backups and static content hosting, like (plug here) my phot.ogra.ph webcams.
Using Gallery2 or Gallery1? The major knock against Gallery2 is lots of folks cant/dont want to use a DB (primarily for the performance reasons). Gallery1 uses all flat files, and it works a lot quicker.

Participant😳 Yeah, well, a quick look at the history shows it was posted 2 months after the guy PM’d me in April. I never got another PM, and after looking on such pages, I wrote off the situation. So there! 😉

ParticipantDoes anyone here not reserve all rights to the images they post on-line?
In general and as a default, yes I’ve got all rights reserved. However there was one shot (“Screwing”, not even a good one) that someone supposedly wanted to include in a wikipedia article. Wikipedia’s licensing requires a share-and-share-alike license (or some other CC license), and thinking what the hell, I changed it.
I was a little suspicious the wikipedia bit was a ruse, so I was shocked, SHOCKED when they never told me where the wikipedia piece was. If someone wanted one of my shots that badly to ask me to change the license on it so they could steal it under false pretenses, a) its kinda cool and flattering that they’d want the shot that badly to go to that trouble, b) they could’ve just taken it and I’d never know anyways. Sure, it could have been someone from Black and Decker and I could have gotten hundreds and hundreds of cents for it, but…eh, I’m just happy someone liked it enough to ask.

ParticipantFrom http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_market
Photographic equipment
Generally regarded as legal in most countries, parallel imports make expensive photographic equipment attractive to savvy users. The grey market in photographic equipment is thriving in highly developed and heavily taxed states like Singapore, with dealers importing directly from lower taxed states and selling at a lower price, creating competition against a local authorised distributor.
Grey sets, as colloquially called, are often comparable to authorised imports. Lenses or flash units of parallel imports often only differ by the warranty provided, and since the grey sets were manufactured for another state, photographic equipment manufacturers often offer local warranty, instead of international warranty, which will render grey sets ineligible for warranty claims with the manufacturer.
Due to the nature of local warranty, importers of grey sets usually mask the flaw in warranty with their own warranty schemes. These are often warranties with reduced benefits or lasting a shorter period of time.
Grey sets do not differ particularly from an authorised import. They look and function identically, apart from the manufacturer’s warranties having been voided.
Translation: Buyer beware. Any place that’s selling a 40D in the 3 digit price range probably falls into the above category. If you absolutely want a legit 40D with all the gear and (most importantly) the warranty, plan on shelling out at least a grand. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.zeke
ParticipantAlso amazon.com. Sometimes they have better prices on a part than buying from adorama directly. Also, don’t forget crutchfield.com.
